Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Getting Closer

The next morning, I awoke to a loud voice screaming my name. I groaned, rushing over to the bathroom and splashed cold water on my face before going to the dresser and throwing on clothes. Once I was done, I headed over to the unlocked door to find Ruby outside, tapping her feet impatiently.

“Am I going with you today?”

“Definitely not,” she said, laughing before leading me through the house and outside where they were all waiting on me impatiently.

“Next time, I’m leaving with or without her,” Paris whined, stomping ahead with Phebe.

Sarai and Noah followed them, leaving me and Abel alone. I couldn’t help but notice the deep, dark bags underneath his eyes. He hadn’t slept at all.

I was surprised to notice that instead of darting off ahead as usual, he maintained my pace.

“Where are we going today?” I asked, sparking conversation. I didn’t miss Paris’s stare as she kept turning around to watch us every so often.

“The infirmary.”

“Why?”

“One of the betas got hurt.”
