As Kai stood atop the nearby mountain, albeit a very small one but big enough to be fatal for someone of his strength and size, reaching the summit took him all day from dawn to dusk, a journey that would take the average person about 2 hours to accomplish by simply walking.
He gazed down the mountain and pondered, "Is it finally time that I die? I have been alone for such a long time now. I barely eat, and I have no future as I can't even enter school or learn a trade without parents." This was the fate of most orphans. They either perished at a young age or turned to a life of banditry or gang membership. Though some tried to live honest and hardworking lives, most failed as being an orphan made it impossible for them to eventually have anything.
As Kai strengthened his resolve to jump, he decided to take a moment to look up at the sky and yell, "GOD, IF YOU EXIST, WHY AM I SUFFERING LIKE THIS? ... WHY DO I HAVE TO .... DIE TO END MY SUFFERING? WHY DID MY PARENTS ... HAVE TO DIE? WHY DID THEY TAKE ... AWAY CASSIE?! SHE was all ... I had left!" he gasped for air between each word, his chest heaving as tears streamed down his face.
Suddenly, he noticed something out of the corner of his eye—a bright light. "Huh, what's that?" he exclaimed as he wiped the tears from his face. "Pretty," he muttered as he noticed that the light was growing bigger and getting closer. Eventually, he thought it to be God's wrath punishing him for his earlier words, so he closed his eyes, ready to accept his divine punishment. But as soon as the light enveloped him, he lost consciousness.
As he was unconscious in his own head, a voice could be heard: "Host found." "Compatibility check 100%." "Integrating system to host's soul." "1% complete." "ERROR!!!" "Host's status is in a horrible state." "Activating emergency healing." "System will shut down for the meantime." Unbeknownst to Kai, a whole year had passed as his body lay there, though no one ever noticed it as it was hidden behind a rock. "Integration status 99%." "100% complete, waking host." As Kai woke up, he asked, "Am I dead?"
"No," replied a robotic voice.
Obviously, Kai was startled and looked around to see who was talking to him, but there was nobody in sight. He realized he was on the same mountain peak. Now scared, he asked, "Who are you? Where are you?"
"I am the system, and I am inside you."
Now more confused than ever, he was starting to get creeped out. Before he could ask the voice to elaborate more, it started to speak and said, "I am one of many systems created by (CLASSIFIED) to help him choose a successor. I am attached to your soul."
Kai, now less confused but still not understanding everything, decided to ask more questions, "So now that you chose me, am I now whatever you said's successor?"
"No, you're one of many candidates, and my purpose is to make sure you become his successor by guiding you through everything in your journey."
"What journey?"
"To become his successor through cultivation."
Kai, now surprised, suddenly said, "You mean like becoming an immortal?"
"Yes."
