"You have reached the voicemail of…"
I hung up. I've tried calling my parents to see if they could pick me up or to at least help me out, to give me advice regarding the incident. The only thing that has been responding on their behalf is the voicemail. I gave up after the 12th call, I was scared and terrified… the accident will stay hidden behind these walls, nobody except the Laine family, the police officers, the hospital, and I shall know about this.
…
I went back to work as Mrs. Laine had insisted; going up the stairs and heading to the room assigned to me. Once I reached for the doorknob, I felt it again. The odd feeling was back, it paralyzed me for a few seconds until I regained full control of my body and pushed myself to open the door. The room was darker than usual, the moonlight was the only thing lighting it, you could see little specks of dust flying around. I noticed that the room still had a beautiful wooden bed frame, it looked ancient to say the least. It had many cracks, it was chipped, it seemed as if one touch would turn it into dust which would add more to the collection in the room.
I kept looking around the room, walking little by little inside. My gut was telling me to run, to not look back, but I stood my ground. So far, I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary which was really reassuring… something made me pause though. The mansion was in perfect condition, no cracks on the walls, no holes whatsoever. The only window in this room was closed and there isn't any sign that the glass needs fixing, so why in hell is the curtain moving? It doesn't make sense. The long, white and damaged curtains were moving on their own. I started to cough as the dust in the room was flying all over the place, my eyes were getting itchy, I closed them and slowly backed my way out of the room. As much as I want to say I made it out of the room safely that isn't what really happened.
The next step I took made my blood turn to ice. You see, I stepped on bones, specifically human bones. It made it turn into dust… that's another thing that made me freeze. I realized something… the dust in the room, the bones (well… what was left of it), I pieced everything together. The dust in the room was the dust from the remains of whoever the person was. I felt nauseous, it was too much. Although I want to say it's over, it only gets worse from there. My phone starts ringing, when I looked at the caller ID I saw that it was Mrs. Laine. I picked up… "Amelia, get out of the room right now. Killian somehow knew you went back in there and he does not look pleased… he isn't himself and as much as a mother loves their children… I am afraid that he will do something unacceptable."
I didn't even hang up, as I turned around to run out of the room, my body collided with someone else's. At that moment, I felt my soul leave my body. I didn't even have time to react, his hands were holding me in place. As I was about to look at his face and tell him to let me go, the moon shone brighter. It was blinding to say the least, but just as it came, it was gone… Everything afterwards happened so fast, it was a blur. All I can remember is a burning sensation in my back and suddenly being out of the room. I don't recall much. It's as if someone just erased my memories, but I know that's not what happened. Maybe… that's really all that happened. I don't know anymore…
…
The worst part is that after the incident in the room, things escalated from there. I was in the living room, no idea how I got there, but that isn't my biggest concern. At the moment, my biggest concern was the event unfolding right outside the living room door. I saw Killian's siblings just standing there, the door wide open. They were scared, hugging each other. Out of instinct I went in front of them, letting them hide behind me. I saw how Mr. Laine was protecting Mrs. Laine as they were backing up from Killian. He looked menacing, he was threatening both of his parents to leave and to never return. He didn't even recognize his own parents. His siblings started to cry which caught Killian's attention. When he turned around, I saw different features. This wasn't my best friend… At first I thought he was glaring at his siblings, but I realized he was glaring at me. He started walking closer and closer, but every step he took was a step that I took away from him. Our distance became larger until the children and I were against the wall. Even though I was terrified, I was able to see a big change in his eyes. I could see Killian, but I could see another person as well. They say that the eye is the window to someone's soul and literally I could see the soul of two people. From outside, I could see Mrs. Laine on the phone while Mr. Laine got closer and closer to his son and knocked him out.
…
Some police officers, investigators and paramedics got to the residence. The paramedics went straight to check on everyone. Mr. Laine was talking to the officers on what happened, but it seemed he brought me into the topic because they excused themselves from him and walked towards me. Meanwhile, the investigators went right inside the mansion to check everything to see anything out of the ordinary.
"We are officer James and officer Cody, we were told you were the first to inform the parents about a peculiar sensation, am I correct?" I nodded and they continued "Please tell us your side of the story, don't leave any details out." Once again I nodded and I told them everything, from the weird feeling to the remains of the person. When I finished telling them the story, they got their dispatch and told the investigators to go into the room to check it out. I didn't know if I should tell them about the pain I was feeling in my back… But I figured it would be best to tell the paramedics about that rather than the officers.
While the paramedics were checking Killian out, Mr. Laine came to me. "Amelia… Killian isn't acting himself because… This is difficult to explain… The paramedics didn't see any sign that Killian must have taken drugs… but as they inspected his eyes, I told them that they were a different color… They are professionals… However, they couldn't explain that to me… So the only explanation here that the officers, investigators and myself were able to come up with is … well… as crazy as it sounds… he's… he's possessed," Mr. Laine just dropped the bomb on me. That is what's happening right now, this is the accident. The skeleton that was found in the room was taken by the investigators and the police officers. We were told that we would have to resume life, to not tell anyone else until everything is figured out… How are we supposed to resume our lives, when my best friend is sharing his body with someone else?
I excused myself from Mr. Laine. I came to the conclusion it would be better to tell the paramedics about my back pain. The paramedics saw me heading their way and they told me Killian was fine, you know, the usual. Although I was worried about Killian, I stopped them and explained about my back. They lifted the back side of my shirt and they gasped. Immediately, they told me to take a seat inside the ambulance. They decided it was better to check it out at the hospital. Once I took my seat, I turned to look at Killian who was strapped to a carrier, sleeping peacefully. As I grabbed his hand, the paramedics closed the door and we were on our way.
