Chapter 24: Let's Talk

When I come out of sleep, it's with the taste of salt water in my nose and the faint knowledge that there are others in the room. The gentle light of candles flickers against the darkness, which is the first reminder that I'm not home. Then the dread of everything that's happened comes slamming back into me. 

My limbs are so heavy and sore when I push myself up into a seated position that I almost wonder if I've been drugged. Who knows at this point? Ivan Volkov is an absolute nightmare. When it comes to women, there's nothing that he won't do.

"How are you feeling?" 

The voice of an old man startles me. He's at the side of the bed and takes gentle hold of my wrist.

"Your pulse is stronger." 

I'm sure my pulse quickens, too, because for a moment I think I might be able to get out of here.
