The two Geralds' eyes grew hollow, as if struck by a sudden revelation. They had hoped an adult would finally take an interest and assist them. Little did they expect that their savior was, in fact, a child, and one five years their junior, at that.

Mixed emotions swirled within Gerald. He couldn't pinpoint a single feeling to describe his current state. He was undoubtedly disappointed, but that only scratched the surface. Surprise, yes, but it didn't capture the full range of his feelings. Jealousy, perhaps, was the core emotion.

Gerald peered down at the shorter Philip. Yes, it was jealousy that simmered within him. While he'd been waiting for compassion from adults, Philip had already become a source of it for others.
