Chapter 1: What am I looking for?

Why was it so dark? Was a dismal black mass of empty space all there was to the universe? No. There was something she was looking for. The girl sought something...something very precious to her heart.

The scent of lavender began to permeate the darkness.

No. She thought, fighting back consciousness. No, not yet. Before all of her senses return, she must remember.

Energy began to pulse around the girl and her fingertips tingled as she regained her sense of touch. A memory struggled to surface in her mind. Suddenly, a vision of dancing, light-brown-eyes, like golden honey, came flashing through her mind's eye. Soft, distant laughter came echoing through the darkness.

"Come and find me." A gentle voice laughed. The girl didn't dare breath. The deep voice was spellbinding and the eyes seemed to possess every emotion at once.

At that moment, the girl felt a powerful force come to life within her heart. It felt like a flower was blooming in her chest. The feeling was painfully tender and somewhat confusing. The vision vanished as quick as it had come leaving a lump of bitter sweet sorrow caught in the girl's throat. She opened her damp eyes to a vast, starry sky. Blue moonlight shone down upon her in the midst of a field of lavender. The sweet fragrance filled her senses and the flower's pure energy flowed through her. The lavender blossoms danced in the chill night air, caressing her face. The girl didn't know who or where she was and she truly didn't care.

Remembering those gentle eyes made it slightly painful for her heart to beat.

It was then she realized that she hadn't been breathing, and she gasped for air.

Clean, chill air flooded her lungs. A warm hand lovingly brushed strands of hair out of the girl's face, startling her with the unexpected touch. The girl looked up into a kind face. The love in his eyes distracted her from the fact that his once flawless face was marred with scars. Startling hazel eyes looked out from a beautifully imperfect face. His thick, dark brown curls waved in the chill night air in rhythm with the lavender. The moon was directly above his head, bathing his curls in silver moonlight. The very skies and terrain pronounced this man their master. He was crowned with the moon and stars and was draped in robes of lavender. His hand was the only warm thing in this cold place. She didn't know why, but looking in the kind face made her want to cry.

Gentle whispers reached her ears.

"What is it?"

"It isn't a flower."

"Shh. Let the master speak."

Two curious faces gazed down at the girl. They were humanoid in form, but upon closer inspection, she saw they had bodies made from leaves, vines, twigs, and flowers.

"I do not know what I am," I said, "I only know that I am looking for something."

The flower people glanced at each other.

"It speaks."

"It speaks the language of the flowers."

"But it is not a flower."

"No, it looks like the master."

The kind man took the girl's small, chilled hands between his big, warm hands.

"This is Nimoi Lavendula and Latifolia Lavendula. Introduced the master.

His voice was welcoming and all the world seemed to hold its breath when he spoke.

"By what are you called?" Asked Nimmoi.

"My name is not known to me." said the girl in confusion. Her head turned once again to the man. "Who are you?"

"I am Esmé."

"Do you know me?"

"Yes."

"I'm sorry. I don't remember."

"It matters not." He said sadly. "Of what do you search, little one?"

"Even of this, I am not quite sure. When I think of what I seek, my heart aches."

The flower people exchanged knowing looks.

"Very well." spoke the master, his face slightly crestfallen. "You must find it."

"Now, master?" Asked Nimmoi. "It is yet night!"

"You speak the truth. However, I believe this quest will begin sooner than expected. Sleep now, little one. Your journey must commence at first light."

The girl didn't argue. Though she had only just awoken, her eyelids were closing of their own volition and she sank once again into darkness.
