Chapter 286: I’m making sure you understand the stakes

The two vampires lunged at me with predatory speed, their claws outstretched, eyes glowing with a menacing red hue. I barely had time to dodge, rolling to the side as one of them swiped at my head, missing by inches.

My heart pounded in my chest, the weight of my situation pressing down on me. I was outnumbered, and each move had to be calculated. There was no room for error.

The first vampire recovered quickly, his eyes narrowing as he charged again. I used the broken table leg as a makeshift stake, swinging it in a wide arc.

The wood slammed into his ribs, and though it didn't pierce his heart, it was enough to send him stumbling backward with a snarl of pain.

The second one was on me in a heartbeat, moving so fast that I barely had time to react. His hand caught my arm, yanking me toward him with supernatural strength.
