Chapter 1: Prologue

The night that ruined her life had started off as a truly wonderful one. She had finally unlocked the beginnings of her magic.

It had taken months to convince her mother and father, practically begging them to teach her. She knew neither of them really believed she would be able to, but in the end, they had taught her a basic exercise that her mother said she had used as a child to train the mind to control mana. Her father had laughed and commented on how she reminded him of mother.

Another few months had passed before she finally managed the six sparks that were the precursors to the final process that would create the four orbs. The gifts given to humanity by the gods, or so the exercise alluded to.

She remembered the joy on her Mother's face when she'd shown them. Her father, though had just been a strange shocked expression, he'd frowned after that, before realizing what he was doing and congratulating her. Telling her to go work on the next step while he spoke with her mother.

Something seemed off, but she listened, running back to her room to the book they'd given her explaining the basics of magic. She'd consider it her most prized possession, rarely ever going anywhere without it.

She'd studied it for hours, far past when her father or mother would usually arrive to put her to bed. That wasn't a problem, she loved reading, though she did wonder what was going on.

Practicing the simple ritual that she'd been given she had just barely created the four spinning balls when the door opened.

She looked up to see her father with a worried or possibly panicked expression on his face.

"Rain, sweetie, come along. The four of you need to stay with a friend of mine for a little while." He said, taking her hand.

Something seemed wrong. Her sisters stood behind him, Nessarose the youngest, clinging to that toy dog she loved so much. Bridget and Mercy stood just behind her, seeming anxious but also excited, like this was all some adventure.

"Why? What's going on?" Oziandra, also known as Rain asked, mostly just out of curiosity. As the eldest, she always had to set an example for her sisters thus she rarely disobeyed their parents.

"There's no time to explain. Right… we just need to go. Don't worry, it will all be fine. You can bring your book if that helps." He said with a patient if not slightly strained smile.

Nodding, not sure what else to do, Rain followed, taking her book with her. They walked down the hallway, before entering the grand hall that was used to host feasts and greet diplomats.

The Candles weren't lit and in the darkness at the far end of the hall stood Mother.

And she did not look happy to see them…

A second passed before Rose spoke. "Mommy?"

"Oziandra, girls. Come here." Her mother commanded while glaring bloody murder at her father.

"No! Girls, stay where you are!" Her father shouted at them just as she and the rest of them were about to go to their mother.

After that neither of their parents spoke and from her mother's face she was furious. Something was clearly incredibly wrong.

Suddenly Mother gathered a blast of red magical energy, which her father met with his own bright green magic. The resulting explosion lit the purple banners on the wall on fire. From there it was hard to make sense of what was happening as the ground shook and light flashed.

The one thing she could understand was that her parents were definitely trying to kill one another.

It was clear that neither was paying any attention to her or her sisters, and it only became more clear as Father dodged a blast and suddenly…Rose was gone, her toy fallen to the ground and smoking slightly.

She vaguely heard Bridget scream, whether it was due to the loss of Rose or something else, she had no idea.

Each blast, whether dodged or deflected, was damaging the Castle. Damaging their home.

She didn't know what to do, it was like she was just frozen in time. She could only clutch her book tightly to her hyperventilating chest and stare in horror as her family literally tore itself apart.

Part of the roof collapsed, the debris falling behind her and making a sickening sound, like something being crushed... or someone she vaguely realized.

She had to get out, She... she needed to get away.

The book was in her hands. Magic, she could just use that, she didn't want to die.

Another blast barely missed her, this one green followed by a brief shriek. After that, aside from the ringing explosions, it was quiet. She knew why but did not want to process it at that moment. With shaky hands she cracked open her book, more on reflex than with any desire or ability to actually read the written words.

She was too shaken up to barely make out the feeling of something clicking in place deep inside of her. As if a piece of her that had been hidden away finally revealed itself, even if it seems like there was more to be found.

She knew the basic idea, she had to shape her mana to follow her intent, and right now she wanted to be as far away as possible.

Still hyperventilating, she began to form a spell, not really having any idea what she was doing, weaving the power using nothing but some vague sense that she wanted to be away from here.

Right as it was complete she looked up, to see an orb of green light.

An attack her mother had dodged, she had no idea what it was intended to do, but right as it hit her she had an odd thought.

Father had always been good with time dilation magic. Her mind jumped to simpler times when she would catch her parents making use of the magic for some alone time before Rose was born. They always seemed happier and maybe a little embarrassed after she caught them not that she understood why. She only thought it was a little ironic that the magic used to bring them closer was the final nail in the coffin to tear them apart.

She fell backwards and the world went black.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
UncrownedKing UncrownedKing

Just a heads up, I likely won't be updating this story as frequenly as my main story Rewind and Rewrite.

For those interseted. I got the names Bridget from the first woman killed in the Salem witch trials while Mary was apparently the name of her sister.

Nessarose on the other hand was the real name of the wicked witch of the east.

Oziandra is the name of the granddauther of the witch of the west.
