Chapter 2: The First Signs

"Mercer get up, we don't want to miss the comet this year like the last time when we were 7." Lera was impatient, the comet happened once every decade and last time they had missed it because they had slept in. This time Lera had made sure to go to sleep early in order to see it. According to mother Ara it was the most beautiful sight, a radiant teal shine, and one that she had spent many an early morning watching with father. She claimed it offered signs of the future, and was the reason she met their father.

"Mercer come on, get up quickly! We don't want to miss it again!"

"I'm up, jeez, could you be any more impatient." Mercer crawled out of bed and went to get dressed in something warm.

"Well get ready, I'm going to help mother." Lera went to the kitchen where mother Ara was cooking breakfast and went over to help cook.

Lera paused what she was doing and looked over at Ara, "Mother, is the comet really a good omen?" There was a pause of silence while Ara thought.

"I would think so, I believe that every time I saw it something good happened. The first time it passed, I met your Father, he was up there watching it with me didn't even notice him till it was gone, the second time was right before I met you and your brother, this will be my third time seeing it, I can't wait to see what luck it will bring." Mother Ara was smiling widely while looking at Lera. Mercer came in shortly after she finished speaking.

"Good morning mother, when will the comet appear?"

"Not long now Mercer," Mother Ara placed some eggs on two plates and put them on the table in front of the kids, their house wasn't much but they had what they needed, 4 chairs, a table, water, a fire, everything else was luxury, "Eat your breakfast and we can head out to see it."

...

The three of them lay waiting out on the hill near the house waiting for the comet to show.

"Mother, are you sure it was today? You said it would be here soon." Lera asked, she was incredibly impatient since this was her first time seeing the comet.

"I suppose it does seem a little slow this year, in the past it was always early... There!" She stuck out her hand pointing to a teal streak that had just emerged. It moved rapidly and grew bigger the closer to the center of the sky it got. Upon reaching the center it's color began changing, turning to a deep blood red that exuded an aura as though it was screaming into your soul, then in the last quarter of the sky it changed again having a black orb at its core with a brilliant yellow orange glow around the edge and as its tail.

"Mother..." Lera was almost speechless, "That was gorgeous, does it always do that, changing colors so many times!" Lera looked over to Mother Ara but her face showed no excitement, something seemed off.

"Mother, are you alright, you don't look yourself?" Mercer had finally come over and sat in front of Mother Ara.

"Yeah, yeah... I'm alright, just remembering somethings of your father..." Lera and Mercer glanced at each other knowing something was not right but not daring to press further. "But to answer your question, no... that was not normal. I have never seen it change color like that before today."

"So it must be some kind of sign then." Mercer was always interested in this sort of thing, star signs and life, it was his passion. To see how the universe melded with Nature.

"Yes... I am worried I might know what it means to, but for now, I don't think you need worry yourselves with that." Mother Ara was staring off into space again thinking, her face contorting slightly.

"Well, if you say so, I'll trust you, but please don't stress yourself out just to try and protect us from reality."

"Yes, of course Lera, but I need to think for myself for right now." Mother Ara stood up and began heading inside. "I'm gonna take care of your chores today, helps me think, go ahead and explore if you'd like, just make sure to bring the compass and map so you don't get lost."

"Thanks Mother!" Lera loved exploring, and today she could go out for the full day into the mountains and their caves.

...

"Mercer you ready to go?"

"I think I've got everything I need, yes."

"alrighty, let's get a move on!" They began heading out towards the door.

"Be safe kids, make sure to watch out for others, they aren't exactly fond of me anymore."

"What? You're gonna have to tell us that story someday, and don't think you can get out of it!" Lera called out.

"Be back for dinner!" With that they were on their way, marching out into the forest early in the morning. Light had just begun creeping over the mountains, the best time for both Mercer to spot mystical creatures, and Lera to find caves that were unmarked. Today they went North, the past few months they had been going West and had pretty much covered the caves there, so a change of scenery would be nice. Lera had explored over 15 full caves, that went quite aways into the mountains. Granted, some of those were connected, but she counted them anyways. Mercer on the other hand had only seen one of his mystical creatures, a Mountain Nymph it had hid from him around rocks, but he still managed to get a decent sketch of it. A female figure that was dressed with moss, and wore rocks like platemail. It had seemed almost as interested in Mercer as He was in it, but that had not changed it's shyness. Since that day he had not seen it again, but had felt like he was being watched a number of days while waiting outside caves or in the scattered clearings.
