Chapter 28: Disruption

After Juliet had left with Maria, Melissa decided to leave not long after herself as she had an early morning the next day and needed to get some work and sleep done despite how much she wanted to stay and spend another evening with Daniel.

Richard had been keeping himself focused on going over what he wanted to include in all the training he had planned to start by the following weekend. Being more on the old fashion side, he preferred to write everything out by hand and than convert it on to his computer from there. Having ideas written down before they were finalized help to give him more time to think over what it was he wanted to do.

Daniel was keeping himself quiet with the part of the deal he needed to get done as he knew Richard liked to work in silence rather than having too much background noise that would distract him.

Both of their focuses were thrown off however when Daniel's phone started buzzing to let him know that he was getting a call. At this time of night he only ever got calls if it was something work related.

"Hello, this is Daniel." He replied as soon as he answered the phone without bothering to check and see who was calling him. He was mildly surprised to hear Walter's voice coming from the other end of the phone. He had been certain that there was still standing watch where he usually was. If such was case however, there would be no reason for him to be calling, he would've come up and knocked on the office door in stead.

"I see, thank you for letting me. Both you and her are okay though? Do you need someone else to take her?" Daniel asked as he listened to what Walter had to say intently. The use of the word 'her' had caught Richard's attention and he was no longer working as he waited for the call to end so that he could find out what was going. He didn't have to wait long before Daniel ended the phone call with a sigh.

"Apparently we had another drunk customer who was giving Valentina a hard time." Daniel explained when he noticed that the other was paying attention to what was going.

"I thought she had today off?" He asked confused since he had been the one to specific tell her and request the day off for her himself since he knew that she had been working far too much recently.

"She wasn't here on work. From what I understand she had a friend drop her off because there was something she forgot to pickup last night before she left." Daniel replied as he pinched the bridge of his nose. The recent issue with more drunk customers getting handsy with the girls who worked there whether they were on the clock or not was really starting to become annoying. At least for the most part the VIP were behaving so he didn't have much to worry about in that regard.

"She could've asked someone else to pick it up for her. She needs to get better at learning to relax when she has the day off." Richard replied as he went back to focus on the work he was doing. He still had too much to do if he even hoped to get it done by the following weekend around everything else that he was doing.

"That's funny coming from you. Maybe you need to learn to start taking your own advice if you're going to focus on worrying about others so much." Daniel commented, slightly amused that his friend was concerned about a girl he didn't come across as being particularly close to.

"The work I do and the work she does is completely different. If what I had to do was more physical labor-based like what she did, I would consider taking more days off. But since it isn't however, what I am doing is fine for the schedule I work." Richard retorted as he didn't even bother to look up at his friend as he spoke.

"That's what you say, but I think that there are some here who would argue that you would benefit from a few more days off yourself. You get a bit too touchy and focused on the wrong type of stuff when you haven't had enough days off." Daniel did have a point with what he said, but Richard wasn't going to let him know that.

"Who has said that about me?" He instead asked as he finally looked up from what he was doing. The club owner didn't give anything away however by the innocent expression on his face and instead chose to shrug his shoulder as he replied.

"Just some of the staff and such that work around here. They mention every now and again how you seem like you have too much going on or are stressed out over stuff because your behavior changes." Was the only explanation the club owner offered him. "Honestly, I am surprised that there are people who can tell those type of differences in your behavior. To me regardless of what is going on, you seem the same no matter what."

"I suppose that means you're much too busy anymore to pay attention to what's going on with me. You used to be the one who made those type of comments after we first became friends." Richard pointed causing the other to chuckle.

"Hey now, it's not like I don't pay attention to what's going on with you. I think it is more that I just have spent so much time with you that I have gotten used to being around your cold quiet self that I can no longer tell the difference between your normal and stressed out self. But really, you should think about taking more time off if you're serious about taking this job on. Once you start this, you're going to have even less free time than you do now."

"I'm not really that worried whether I will or won't have extra time. I have been dealing with so many other disruptions recently that having an area in my life where everything is rather stable for a change feels exactly like what I need right now." Richard replied as he waved off his friend's concern.

He was perhaps a bit too much of a workaholic some times, but for him work helped him focus on sorting out other things that were bothering. Plus since he wasn't looking for any type of committed relationship in the near future, there really wasn't much else for him to focus on doing except for work.

Hopefully in this job despite him not matching perfectly with Juliet, there wouldn't be too many disruptions that would cause him to regret taking the extra job on.
