Chapter 68: Sixty-Eight

I stared down at the small girl laying motionless. The Mana eater had only managed to disrupt her magic, not eat any of it off, it was simply to powerful. The girl was currently feverish and trapped in continuous nightmares. If she had been able to use mana she might have lasted longer, but now it was wrapping her in nightmares. If she can hold out and not lose her sanity she has a chance, but she's a child. And most grown people would lose it after they have their worst nightmares on repeat in front of them. I wish I could help her, but it's just physically impossible. She's going to die and there isn't a damn thing a single one of us can do. It's infuriating, and I'm terrified to tell the King that she's got days at most. I might actually lose my life. Well, I can't avoid this any longer, and it's not like she can get worse. I'll allow the King in, as much as I hate too, I just hope the castle is still stands after that. Damnit, how the hell am I going to be able to face Altrea? she'll be shattered. And with the baby on the way, she just can't hear about this.
My eyes flicked to the girl laying on the bed, her long black hair was bundled up like a small pillow under her head, after all her hair was already to her ankles and she seemed to have no inclination to cut it. She was very thin and looked so sickly at the moment, as if she would die at any moment. I took one last look at that small, small girl before turning on heel and heading to the doors I knew the King had set an aid at. As soon as I opened it the knight who had been with the King when she had been brought hurried to me.
"Bring the King. I'll allow him to see her." I said emotionlessly.
I dislike talking to people other then my patients, simply because there was a lack of point. Communication is useful, certainly, but idle banter is something I do not have time for. Especially with a patient as severe as her under my care, especially knowing the consequences of her dying.
I watched the man run away to fetch the King and walked back into the infirmary and closed the door.
