“That’s all I can do.”

“Thank you. Thank you so much, Mr. Otter.”

“Most people call me Otter. When did you eat last?”

“Three days ago. That’s when we ran out of food. We weren’t prepared. Nobody told us how bad the winters were.”

“This is a hard one. The snow is heavier, and the air is colder. Snowmelt will come late, I think. Mrs. Tiller, we’re going to be stranded in this cabin for quite a spell. As you can see, it’s just one big room except for the bathing room and a storage closet or two, but we’ll manage.”

She had shown no embarrassment whatsoever in stripping her husband naked in front of me, but now her cheeks reddened at the realization of how closely we would be forced to live.
