The excavation work was nearly completed by the time James came for his next visit. He arrived alone this time, his pony clopping hollowly over the bridge spanning the brimming stream. Lance immediately retreated to the outhouse.

James dismounted and watched him disappear into the barn. “How did it go with that one?”

“It went well. He has not only earned his keep but has also started learning to read.”

“Hmmm, I wouldn’t have suspected him of that ambition.”

“Nor I. But I am always glad when someone wants to learn. How long am I to have you this time?”

“I can stay over until tomorrow. Then I must return. I see your cellar is about dug.”

“I’ll start lining and covering it after you leave. Until then, I’ll husband my strength for other activities.”

“I’ll have a word with Dull Lance before we go inside.”

I trailed him into the barn where Lance was haltering the mare.”

“I see you, Major,” the Sioux said.
