Chapter 22: Shadow spell

Ezra dashed towards her, he knew that she would attempt to either finish this quickly or duke it out. Either way, she would have to make a decision.

One decision was that she would put everything into one massive attack that would win the battle, or she could decide to be cautious and reduce the amount of Mana she uses.

Either way, Ezra was going to win, he was certain about that. If she went for a blast of power, he was most definitely sure that he would dodge or block the attack.

If she decided to duke it out, she would still burn out first, and then he would take advantage of that and land the decisive blow.

Lisa didn't have this type of reasoning and experience, while Ezra on the other hand had experience from his previous world as a law enforcer and this current world.

Lisa opted for the first option, she put everything into another massive attack, her aim to finish off her brother.

"Fulgur Blast!"

The lightning shot towards him like a snake, too fast for him to dodge, but he wasn't worried, it would definitely hurt, but he had to reduce the force and damage.

He wrapped shadow tendrils around his fist, making a very thick shadow glove, he swung his fist as fast as he could and blocked the lightning, the blast threw him back, he landed on the ground roughly, rolled for a small distance before stopping.

He didn't even wait a second, he got back on his feet, his arms were trembling from the force of that attack but he ignored it, he pointed out his other hand towards his sister, shadow tendrils shot out, headed straight for her.

Lisa who was struggling to catch her breath saw the tendrils, she immediately panicked. Her mana was low, there was no way she would be able to block the attack, and she wasn't fast enough to dodge the tendrils.

The tendrils latched onto her and lifted her into the air. Ezra looked at his struggling sister and smiled.

"I win this one, you fought well but there is still much for you to learn," Ezra said

"Huh? When did you become a pro? You started learning how to fight later than me." Lisa argued.

"Yet I dominated you, what do you have to say about that?" He asked.

She didn't have a response to that so she kept quiet. Ezra lowered her to the ground carefully, and that concluded their spar for the day.

"It is amazing how you can use your magic so well without a spell." Lisa pointed out.

"Yeah, but I lack firepower because I don't have a spell, I could only deal with you using other methods, but you have an arsenal of powerful spells that deal good instant damage," Ezra responded.

"Well, I am sure Dad will look for some spells for you," Lisa assured.

The day went by, and Ezra left his room to get some books from his dad, he wanted to read about the world that he was in and everything about the world.

Knock knock!

He knocked on the door of his father's room, after waiting a while his mum was the one to open it.

"What is it, Ezra?" She asked.

"I need something from Dad." He responded.

"Ohh, he did give me something for you before he left, though am sure it isn't what you were looking for since he hasn't told you. Still, I should give you now" his mum replied.

"He left?" Ezra asked.

"Yes, a friend of his invited him to the capital city, the king is having a festival of sorts. His friend wanted both of them to run a stall at the festival.

He said it was a good avenue to sell more and also increase his customer connection. He won't be back for a week." She explained.

"A week, but our exams are in a week." Ezra pointed out.

"Yes I am aware, I will take you there. He didn't want to tell you guys face to face, he knew you would object and it would make it hard for him." She explained his reasoning.

"So he chickened out and left," Ezra said, slightly pissed.

"Don't get angry, he did drop something for you like I said. Your magical attribute is hard to come by, but your father managed to find a rank-one spell on shadow magic.

He went out of his way to do that, pulled all the strings, and used all his connections. He wanted it to be some sort of apology, and to show his support for the exams." She explained the intent of his father.

'A shadow spell? Would that work for me? I have to try it out. If it works, then I don't only need abilities from the system, I can also get spells and add them to my arsenal.

A smart compensation indeed, I'll let it all slide, the spell is worth me forgiving him'

Ezra smiled when he heard about the spell, his Mum saw it and knew that he was happy to hear about the spell.

"Wait a moment, I'll get the spell for you." She said then went into her room, some seconds later she was back with a small scroll.

Ezra collected the scroll from her, he looked at it intently and smiled, he couldn't wait to attempt it.

He was about to leave but his mother called him back.

"So what did you need from your dad, maybe I could help you out." She offered.

Ezra remembered what he had originally come here for, it was to collect some books on history and information. When he saw the spell, he forgot about that entirely.

"Well, I wanted to get some of Dad's books on history and the information of our kingdom and world at large.

If I get into the academy, I'll need such knowledge to be able to survive the world." He explains to her.

"Oh, I see, that is a smart move, seems you are growing up, well he does have them, I'll get them for you."
