Chapter 17: _Have No Choice

I woke up the following morning with the sunlight hitting my face, forcing me to open my eyes with a groan.

Gosh, I barely slept last night. All thanks to Kaene!

Sitting up, I turned my gaze to the window only to spot Miranda standing there with a plastered smile on her face.

"Good morning, ma'am. The Alpha said I should wake you up for breakfast." She bowed slightly.

'Ma'am'?

Hmph... It was amazing how people could change so fast when class was involved.

Turning my gaze to the clock, I sighed. "Miranda? What's the time?"

She followed my gaze, her eyes landing on the clock as well. She arched an eyebrow cluelessly.

"Uh... It's seven AM, ma'am." She blurted.

I nodded my head, the lack of sleep getting into my head and riling up my emotions already. "Right... Now, did the Alpha, my mate, tell you when I slept last night?"

It seemed Miranda was beginning to understand where I was going with this as she shook her head. "N– no, ma'am. But I'm guessing you slept pretty late."

I gave her a sarcastic smile, rolling my eyes soon after. "Miranda, do me a favor and let me sleep. I need at least another hour or two of sleep."

At this point, I wasn't looking at her anymore but I could feel the slight irritation in her voice as she responded. "But, ma'am... The Alpha insisted you come to have breakfast w–"

"I said I'm tired, Miranda!" I snapped, sitting up and glaring at her.

However, when I saw the way she jolted backward, I sighed, rubbing my forehead. Gosh, I was beginning to sound like those entitled rich girls.

"Just, tell the Alpha I'll be there in a bit." My tone was calmer now, as I covered my face with my pillow.

Miranda finally left me alone, closing the door behind her.

"Jeez, I haven't heard from Caleb since last night," I muttered to myself, searching aimlessly for my phone in the drawer beside my bed.

However, just when I reached for the phone, the door burst open, and in came Luna Catherine with a stern look on her face.

"You!" She spat, her arms placed on both sides of her waist. "Where were you last night? I searched the entire mansion and couldn't find you."

I gulped, praying silently that this woman wouldn't bring any unnecessary drama.

Stepping down from the bed, I bowed. "Good morning, your grace. I was taking a stroll around the gardens to–"

"I don't care about that, right now. You can get lost on a highway for all I care." She hissed, causing me to swallow the rest of my words.

I just had to endure. I couldn't let this woman find an excuse to punish me or worse...

"Anyway, why aren't you up yet by this time?" She asked with disdain. "Is this how you want to serve this pack as Luna? Do you know the amount of work that title entails?"

I kept my gaze lowered, not wishing to meet her gaze.

Luckily, she scoffed, giving up. "Be downstairs in thirty minutes. Or, not. You could starve yourself, too, if you like."

And with that, she turned away and locked the door behind her.

"Ugh, I don't think I can live like this for the rest of my life." I sighed, feeling an overwhelming wave of self-pity.

I collapsed onto the bed, feeling trapped and suffocated. I needed an escape, if only for a moment.

My gaze fell on the phone still clutched in my hand just then. I dialed Caleb's number, hoping he'd answer.

"Hey, sis," Caleb's warm voice came from the other end. "Gosh, how've you been? I thought those entitled pricks seized your phone or something."

"Caleb!" I exclaimed, relief washing over me. "Are you okay? Were you able to get back home?"

"Yeah, I'm fine sis. Your mate sent some of his guards to escort me." His voice sounded teasing.

I rolled my eyes, chuckling dryly. "Funny. We're mates but that's where the relationship ends."

I subconsciously glanced at my door, half expecting Kaene to burst in.

Meanwhile, Caleb whistled. "Yikes. You sound like you hate him and honestly, I don't blame you. Is something wrong?"

"Everything's wrong, Caleb. I don't even know where to start." I replied, tears welling up in my eyes.

But I hurriedly used the back of my hand to clean them off. I didn't want Caleb to notice my sadness and do something stupid.

"Hey, you can always start from somewhere, sis. Take your time too." Caleb urged me to speak.

Eventually, I drew in a deep breath and explained everything. Well, except for the part where I had an affair with Beta Negan.

Caleb listened attentively, his silence from the other end soothing.

"And Luna Catherine is just... unbearable," I concluded with a grunt, gritting my teeth.

Well, it wasn't like he didn't know that for himself. He'd seen how unbearable the woman could be firsthand.

"You don't deserve any of that, sis." Caleb's voice was filled with rage. "I'm coming over there to protest s–"

"Caleb, don't be silly." I sighed, sniffling to hold back the snort trying to come out of my nose. "I've accepted my fate. I just have to hope the situation here changes before I lose my mind... Haha."

The whole thing wasn't amusing at all, but I had to use humor to make myself feel better.

"Besides..." I added. "I'm the Moon's Chosen. That's not a responsibility I can run away from easily."

There was a few seconds of silence from the other end, causing me to tense up. But eventually, Caleb sighed.

"I hope you know what you're doing, sis." He muttered.

A wry smile curled up my lips as I responded. "I do, Caleb. It's not like I have much of a choice anyway, but I'll be fine."

With that, we talked about other things, and Caleb managed to make me laugh a few times.

But I eventually had to hang up and by the time I did, my face was already trailing with hot tears.

"Gosh, I'm a hot mess." I clicked my tongue, brushing my hands through my hair.

However, at that same moment, Miranda burst through the door, her usual fake smile plastered on her face.

"Okay, ma'am, it's time to have your bath..." She trailed off when her gaze fell on my face.

I tried wiping off the tears on my face but it was already too late.

"Gosh, you can't go downstairs looking like that, ma'am. What happened?" She asked, and for a second I thought I could hear a hint of worry in her tone.
