Chapter 102: A Favour Trap

Petra was now crying as she explained everything to him.

“You don’t have to cry.” He said and she could feel the grogginess in his voice. “You have done nothing wrong. You waited almost four years of uncertainty. It is fate Petra…” She noticed that he had stopped calling her Miss Sunshine.

Her heart was breaking. “We just have to accept our destinies.”    “Where are you, right now?” she asked.

“Do not bother about that. I will be on God is Good motors first thing in the morning back, then think of where to move to next. You are a married woman now….it would not be proper to meet with you.” He said.

“We had an agreement with the guy I married.”   She said.

“An agreement.?”

“Yes. He would divorce me whenever you came back and he……he has not…..not come to my bed.”

“What? But I doubt if he would agree now. I don’t want to complicate things. If your father finds out that I came back to cause trouble in your marital life….it would not go down well.”

“I will talk to him now. Please Haya….Justin. Let me talk to him.” There was a short pause.

“Do that……but if he does not agree, I will be off by morning.”   She felt how heartbroken he was and she felt tears disgorging. That was Justin, the love of her life, the one who meant everything to her about to slip away for the last time and the way he spoke, he was going away and was not coming back.

She ended the call and felt a new stream of courage flowing through her. She got up, wore her veil and opened the door, and then headed straight to Jubril’s room. She knocked and entered. She met him on his bed, using his i-pad. He seemed to be astonished to see her. She had never come to his room.

“What is wrong?”   She wore a sullen expression, looking pathetic, dejected, desperate and weak.

“Jubril……please I need your help.”   “Hmmmmm?”   “Our agreement…..I think the time has come.”   He frowned.

“What are you talking about?” he asked.

“Please divorce me. Please.” Petra said.

“I can’t do that. I am not wicked.”  He said.

“It will be the most kind thing you have ever done. Justin is back.”   She saw shock on his face.

“What?”   “He just called me. He is around.” She was crying again.

“How dare he call my wife without my consent?” he asked.

“He did not know I was married. I just told him….he plans to leave in the morning. Please let me go.” Jubril wore an expression that scared her. He seemed not to be diving towards compromise.

“I can’t do that.” Jubril said.

“Please…you promised and the six months you said has not even completed. Please……”   He got off the bed, took slow steps to the window, and then turned at her.

“How do I believe you are telling the truth.”  He asked.

“I swear it was him. I can never miss his voice.” She said.

“Don’t say things to make me feel jealous.”

“I am sorry. I will not do that again. Please forgive me. I never intended to hurt you.”

“You really love this guy.” She shook her head.

“No, I don’t love him. I just want to fulfill a promise.” Jubril chuckled.

“I wonder what you take me for. Do I look like a toddler to you?” he asked.

“No. you don’t.”   “Can you see how you look? What if I divorce you and he says he would not get married to a divorcee, what would you do?”

“Do not bother about what he would say to me. Please, just divorce me.” Petra insisted.

“God! What the hell did this Justin do to you?” he asked.

“He did not do it. We did it…..We never planned it.” She responded.

“Chose your words carefully. I am still your husband.”

“Yes, sir.”   He stared at her. He could see that all she wanted in the world was a divorce just to be with the so called Justin. “Okay, are you willing to pay the price? I will divorce you if you will do me a favour.”

“What favour? Just mention it.” He smirked.   “We will consummate our marriage tonight. Spend the night with me and I will divorce you.” She felt a bang in her head.  “That is the only condition that will set you free. One night.”

“What?” Petra raised her eyebrows, her eyes rolled absentmindedly and he saw the glitters of paramount beauty.   “That is your freedom ticket. Why do you make it sound as if I am asking you to commit adultery with me? I am only asking for what rightly belongs to me.

You are mine now and not his. Just one night….okay, you don’t have to spend the whole night with me, let us just consummate our marriage and you are free.”

She closed her eyes, imagining Justin somewhere, grieving, shattered and planning to leave her forever. Could she afford to let him go? But Jubril was her husband, it would not be adultery, all she wanted was to be with Justin. No! She would not let him have it. He agreed to the terms and it was not going to change.

She could not imagine herself with another man. She had prayed and hoped Justin would be the first and probably the last. She felt the tears escaping through her eye lids.

“Jubril….please don’t do this to me.”   “What am I doing to you? If he truly loves you, he would not mind.”

“It is an honour I was preserving for him. We were together so many times and he never tried to get it out of the right way. I want him to be the one….I have the regrets of not having him as my first husband already……please do this for me.

You are handsome. I must confess, you are more handsome than him, you have more money, he has nothing, he was even proudly telling me he runs a business centre near a university. That is a great achievement to him.

You are from a rich family. You have your biological family around you. But my heart lies with him. Nothing of glamour would make me trade him for anything. My happiness is trapped with him, he captured my smiles, my love, my laughter and the only way to get them out is to be with him. If he goes away, he will take them away. I will have no love left for another man, no real smile to pacify him and my laughter would be missing.

Please save my life. You are a dream man. So many girls will die to have you. I guess if I had not met Justin, I would have fallen for you. Please let me go tonight, let me go and look for him.”  Petra said with tears pouring from her face.

“Do you know where he is?” He asked.

“He won’t tell me because I told him I am married.” Petra responded.

“What if I let you go and he says he does not want you?”

“I will bear my cross.” Petra said.

“I will not let you go until I see him.”

She paused. “How? He will never come here and he is leaving in the morning.”

“That is my new condition. You don’t want to consummate our marriage with me…okay, I will let that go but I will have to see him, if he says he would marry you after I divorce you, then I will divorce you there but if he says no, then you are stuck with me….and if we don’t find him…….then it is over. You will remain my wife.”

“Please….” Petra begged..

“I will not change my mind.” He said and got back to the bed.    She studied him and felt he was surely not going to listen to her pleas. She nodded.

“Thank you.” She said and went out.   She rushed back to her room and picked her phone. She dialled Justin’s number but to her dismay, it was switched off.   What?   Did he do that on purpose? Did he change his mind after she told him she was married? Was he avoiding her calls? She cried softly.

Who could she tell this? She wanted to share, have someone to tell her what to do. She was befuddled, her head was in turmoil, and thoughts moved like gas molecules. She sat on the bed, and kept trying the number within intervals until she heard the call for prayers.

It was dawn. She brushed her mouth, performed ablution and prayed. Then she recalled what Justin said. I will be on God is good motors first thing in the morning. God is good motors!   That was a transportation company at Fadeyi Road. He would be there.

She sprang up, rushed a bath, got dressed and went towards Jubril’s room. She met him as he was coming back from Masjid.   “Good morning.” She greeted respectfully.
