Chapter 11
Magus academy
"Oh...that" He scratched his head.
"Yes, that! You could have died! I thought you were smarter than that. Tell me, why did you go to that place?" Asked his father.
'I don't have a better excuse to offer, so I guess I'll just tell him the truth.'
"I made a bet with cousin Fabian that I could acquire some crimson lilies," Siegfried said.
"You went there for a stupid bet?...sigh...I thought you were smarter than that, you need to stop letting your cousin lead you like that! I never even complained when you refused to attend the Magus academy, thinking that at least you would be safe at home..."
'Magus academy uh?...that would be a good place to learn more about this age and this new magic system that people use. One lesson a week with Augustus is not enough.'
"Father, speaking of the Magus Academy."
His father raised an eyebrow. "Don't tell me that you changed your mind."
Siegfried nodded. "I wish to attend." He wasn't planning on staying in the manor forever and that seemed like a good place to start his travel.
"Why though? As long as you follow Augustus' lessons, you should be able to become a Rank 1 Magus in a few years. That would be enough to maintain our status as mid-rank nobles. Isn't that what you wanted, my son? A quiet and easy life? to enjoy the pleasures of life like your father?."
Arian Lancaster could not understand how his son could have changed soo much since the last time He saw him.
"That was in the past. I now wish to explore my limits and test myself against others. And is not like I have to stop enjoying the pleasures of life because of that."
His father sighed. "It seems like that accident made you more like your grandfather. He was also always looking for challenges. Well..if that is what you want. I will not stop you. The academy admission test will take place in less than two months in the capital city of Aglioso. Albert can take you there."
"Admission test? What kind of test is it?" Asked Siegfried.
"Don't worry about that. It is merely a formality to exclude most commoners. They charge a fee of ten gold coins and then perform an affinity test. As long as you have grade D affinity or higher they will let you in."
"Why would it exclude most commoners?"
"Well, to begin with, the fee of ten gold coins is more than most commoners make in a year so, not many can afford it. And second, elemental affinity will rarely appear among commoners so most families will not risk soo much money for the small chance of getting their child into the academy. Still, the risk could be very worth it if it pays off. A commoner becoming an Official Magus is quite the jump in status"
"Why would commoners have less affinity than nobles?" He asked.
'He could understand nobles having access to better techniques and resources and thus will normally get further than people without those privileges. But that has nothing to do with talent.'
"Elemental affinity can be inherited. Old noble bloodlines carry power that commoners cannot compete with. For example, our Lancaster family has a long line of fire Magus. Your mother was chosen for me because her family also had a long line of powerful Magus. So when you were born, it was guaranteed that you would have a high affinity for elemental magic. Commoners on the other hand would marry anyone. Even if a commoner is born with a high elemental affinity, they may then marry some random commoner with no talent for magic. Then, their children will be born as just average people. Do you understand now?"
"I see now..." Siegfried said.
'During my time we used to do that with horses. They called it selective breeding...so, now people are doing that to increase the odds of having a high elemental affinity among noble families...what a curious thing.'
"In any case, make sure to study as much as you can during the time you have left. Although is not a big deal, you will be starting the academy year later than normal."
------------------------------------
A week has passed since the conversation with his father. He has been keeping his training routine of exercise and cultivation with some study added to it. He didn't want to arrive at the academy looking like an ignorant fool by not knowing some common piece of knowledge.
After a week of constant training, his body was starting to show changes. Although He was still very much overweight, He had lost at least twenty pounds and his physical stamina has risen considerably.
He stated that He will need at least six more months of stretching his muscles and bones before He is ready to start accumulating elemental energy inside his dantian. That's where the real cultivation will begin.
It was almost midnight now and Siegfried was about to conclude his cultivation session when He noticed something strange.
Inside his soul realm, the mysterious egg was starting to emit stronger pulses of yang energy.
Upon closer inspection, Siegfried noticed that the cracks on the surface were becoming more prominent and new cracks were starting to appear.
"Coult it be?!, is it going to finally hatch? What kind of creature could be inside!"
Siegfried observed the egg with great patience as more and more cracks appeared.
A red light started to seep through the cracks as these became bigger.
The pulses of energy became stronger and more frequent.
"This is it! Is about to hatch!" He cried with excitement.
The egg was now riddled with cracks and rays of bright red light were coming out.
One last pulse of yang energy made Siegfried back away and the shell completely shattered.
He heard a loud cry from the creature that has just been born.
As the light diminished, He was able to finally see it.
He gasped. "That!!!, that can't be!"
