"Rashid!!"
Naib exclaimed in a worried tone. The thing he was fearing the most finally happened as the ranger, Eden, had recovered and was ready to join the fray again.
'Shit! Shit! Is this part of their fucking plan?!' Naib thought as he furiously looked at Leif who was smiling as if the huge wound on his abdomen did not exist.
His greedy decision cost them not only the perfect chance to retreat but possibly another one of his close comrades.
Hazem already fell and it would be a great blow to their mercenary group if Rashid was slain as well.
Unfortunately, even if they decide to retreat now, it would cost them a lot of mercenary soldiers to do so in addition to Rashid who would probably not be able to retreat with them due to his wounded lower body.
Naib started to regret his decision of not retreating early but he also knew that his failure was due to the excellence of that loathsome general named Leif.
The guy was simply too crafty, even willingly taking a hit just to make them stay.
Now, he couldn't retreat even if he wanted to or he would have to leave one of his brothers behind which he couldn't stomach to do.
His unstable state of mind even affected his duel with Helena as he made mistakes after mistakes letting Helena get the upper hand.
Rashid gnashed his teeth as he took glances at the battlefield to see what was going on.
He knew that they would be wiped out at this rate so he made a very difficult decision for the good of his brothers.
"Naib! Retreat! The entire group would be wiped out if this goes on! You understand this as well so do your fucking job as a leader!"
At normal times, Rashid wouldn't dare speak to Naib like this. However, he knew that the guy wouldn't leave him if he didn't persuade him so even if the decision of sacrificing himself was hard for him, Rashid willingly did so.
He was the one who fucked up anyway so he had to pay for his mistakes.
If only he realized that this hateful general Leif was only luring the entire mercenary group in, then none of this would've happened.
Naturally, Naib understood the fact that they would indeed be wiped out if they didn't leave Rashid behind so he subconsciously felt relieved that Rashid was willing to sacrifice himself for the group.
He didn't want to leave anyone behind but as a leader of an entire mercenary group, he had to.
Thus, through gritted teeth, Naib ordered his men to retreat.
"Retreat to Unclave City!"
After hearing the order to retreat, Naib's men breathed a sigh of relief as they started to retreat in an organized manner, planning to exit through the city gate on the other side of the city as they skillfully fend off the Rougenfortian pursuers.
Seeing that his brothers were starting to retreat.
A bittersweet smile appeared on Rashid's face as he resolved himself to fight to the death even while struggling to move, hoping to take someone down with him if at all possible.
Naturally, Helena wouldn't allow the entire mercenary group to retreat without making them pay for their mistakes and shouted an order which made Rashid enraged.
"Leif! Leave that half-dead bastard to Eden, Go and wreak havoc on the ranks of the retreating mercenaries!"
Leif immediately complied with Helena's commands leaving the frustrated Rashid behind to deal with Eden's arrows.
After all, even if Eden failed to kill the guy immediately, they could always come back for his life later since he was already a fish on a chopping board due to his leg and foot injury.
In just a few minutes, Leif was already on the frontlines, decimating mercenary after mercenary, making Naib grimace due to the massive losses.
After losing two officers, Naib had no way to deal with Leif so he could only grit his teeth while watching his men lose their lives.
Seconds turned into minutes and minutes turned into an hour. Only then did all of his remaining men manage to get out of the city.
Although Helena wanted to pursue them, it would be hard to since now, they were the ones who had to pass through the small opening of the gate before they could have a chance to wipe the opponents out.
Thus, Helena decided to stop chasing, letting the mercenary group go without giving them a single advantage be it big or small.
If they decided to chase, then the mercenaries might cause significant losses due to the small chokepoint of the gates.
If they don't however, although the mercenaries get to live another day, the Rougenfortians would have neglectable losses which was always their king's priority.
Finally, after three short hours, the battle ended as the Rougenfortians successfully took control of Gonad City.
