5.95% Reincarnated as a Carp: The Evolution System / Chapter 5: The Dance of Predators

Chapter 5: The Dance of Predators

The water around the grotto pulsed with an uneasy rhythm. Mira's words echoed in Daniel's mind: "You've just painted a target on your back." Despite the thermal vents offering a temporary sense of security, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched.

"You said I've made enemies. Care to explain?" Daniel asked, keeping his tone as steady as he could.

Mira flicked her tail, her silver scales catching the light. "This lake isn't just some free-for-all. Every territory is controlled by something—or someone. That crustacean you took down? It wasn't just a brute. It was part of a network, a hierarchy. And by defeating it, you've disrupted the balance."

Daniel frowned. "So, what now? Do they all come after me at once?"

Mira shook her head. "Not all. But word spreads fast. Some will see you as a threat. Others…" She hesitated, glancing toward the darker edges of the grotto. "Others might see you as an opportunity."

Before Daniel could press further, a sharp ripple in the water made both fish freeze. Mira's body tensed, her fins twitching.

"Something's coming," she whispered.

The system chimed, confirming their fears.

[Warning: Hostile Presence Detected.]

[Analysis: Juvenile Abyssal Pike. Threat Level: Moderate.]

Out of the shadows, a sleek, black-scaled predator emerged. Its elongated body moved with predatory grace, and its rows of needle-like teeth glinted in the faint light. The Abyssal Pike's glowing yellow eyes locked onto Daniel, its tail flicking as it positioned itself to strike.

Daniel felt his fins quiver. This wasn't like the crustacean. The Pike was built for speed, precision, and lethality.

"Mira, any advice?" he asked, trying to keep his voice calm.

She didn't answer. Instead, she darted backward, her body blending into the surrounding shadows.

"Seriously?" Daniel hissed, but he didn't have time to dwell on her retreat. The Pike lunged.

The water exploded around him as Daniel barely evaded the attack. The Pike's jaws snapped shut with a horrifying clack, missing him by inches. Daniel darted upward, weaving through the thermal currents.

[Analyzing Combat Scenario… Tactical Options Unlocked.]

[Tip: Exploit the Pike's speed against it. Use obstacles and terrain to tire it out.]

"That's easier said than done!" Daniel growled, narrowly avoiding another lunge.

The Pike was relentless, its streamlined body cutting through the water with terrifying efficiency. Daniel zigzagged between vents, forcing the predator to adjust its trajectory repeatedly.

As he swam, an idea formed. If he could lead the Pike into the geothermal currents, it might slow it down or disorient it long enough for him to strike.

[New Combat Mission: Outmaneuver the Abyssal Pike.]

Objective: Lure the Pike into thermal currents.]

Reward: +15 Experience, Pike Scale Fragment.]

Daniel turned sharply, leading the Pike toward one of the stronger vents. He could feel the heat intensify as he approached, the water bubbling with energy. The Pike, undeterred, followed closely, its jaws snapping at his tail.

As Daniel swam through the vent's edge, he felt the water scald his fins slightly, but his smaller size allowed him to slip through. The Pike wasn't so lucky. Its larger body hit the full force of the current, and it recoiled with a furious screech.

[Damage Inflicted: Abyssal Pike HP -15%. Status: Agitated.]

The Pike thrashed, its movements erratic. Taking advantage of its disorientation, Daniel circled back and darted toward its exposed side. He bit down hard, his teeth finding purchase between its scales.

[Critical Hit! Abyssal Pike HP -10%. Target Slowed.]

The predator roared, twisting violently to shake him off. Daniel released his grip and darted away, narrowly avoiding the swipe of its tail.

"You're not so untouchable now, are you?" Daniel muttered, adrenaline surging through him.

But the Pike wasn't finished. Recovering quickly, it locked onto Daniel again, its movements more deliberate this time. It feinted to the left before lunging right, catching Daniel off guard.

Pain exploded in his side as the Pike's teeth grazed him. He twisted free, blood clouding the water around him.

[Warning: Damage Sustained. Energy -5%. Bleeding Detected.]

"Great," Daniel hissed, the sting of the wound fueling his determination. "If I don't finish this soon, I'm done for."

He glanced around, searching for an opening. The vents had worked before, but he needed something more decisive. That's when he noticed a cluster of jagged rocks near the grotto's edge.

"If I can lure it there…"

Daniel swam toward the rocks, deliberately slowing his pace to bait the Pike. The predator took the bait, surging after him with renewed vigor.

As he neared the rocks, Daniel angled his body sharply, slipping through a narrow gap. The Pike followed, its speed working against it as it slammed into the jagged edges.

[Critical Damage! Abyssal Pike HP -30%. Status: Severely Injured.]

The Pike thrashed wildly, its movements sluggish as blood seeped from its wounds. Sensing its vulnerability, Daniel seized the moment. He darted forward, biting down on its exposed gills.

The Pike let out a final, shuddering screech before going still, its body sinking toward the lakebed.

[Combat Complete! Abyssal Pike Defeated.]

[Rewards: +15 Experience, Pike Scale Fragment, Minor Regeneration Boost Unlocked.]

Daniel floated in place, his body aching and his mind racing. The system chimed again, breaking the silence.

[Level Up Achieved! New Level: 4.]

[Stat Increase: Strength +2, Endurance +1.]

[Skill Unlocked: Adrenal Surge — Temporarily increase speed and strength during combat.]

He exhaled—if that was even possible in this form—feeling both relief and exhaustion.

"That was too close," he muttered.

From the shadows, Mira reappeared, her expression unreadable. "Not bad," she said, her tone almost approving.

Daniel glared at her. "You could've helped, you know."

Mira shrugged. "I'm not suicidal. Besides, you handled it. That's more than most could say."

Daniel shook his head, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. "If this is what's normal here, I'm not sure how long I'll last."

Mira's expression softened slightly. "You're stronger than you think, Daniel. But strength isn't enough. If you want to survive here, you'll need allies—and fast."

She gestured toward the Pike's body. "That kill will send a message. The others will know you're not just another prey fish. But it also means they'll watch you more closely."

Daniel groaned. "Fantastic. I can't wait."

Mira smirked. "Get used to it. This is just the beginning."

As the blood cloud around the fallen Pike began to dissipate, Daniel felt the weight of her words. He wasn't just fighting for survival anymore. He was carving out a place for himself in this brutal, unforgiving world.

And he wasn't sure if that made things better—or worse.
