Chapter 7: The First Step Into Stardom

July 1998 – Stratford, Ontario

Age: 4 years, 9 months

Returning home from Toronto, life seemed simultaneously the same and completely different. Stratford's peaceful streets and familiar faces gave no hint of the storm of change brewing on the horizon. For Pattie, the idea of balancing the life of a small-town mother with raising a child on the verge of potential fame felt daunting. For me, though, it was exhilarating.

I didn't fully understand what it meant to have "potential," but I knew that I was on the edge of something important. At four years old, my perception of success wasn't measured in money or fame. It was about sharing my music, making people smile, and doing what I loved.

Pattie's Perspective

As Justin and I settled back into our routine, I couldn't help but notice the shift in his energy. He practiced more often and with more focus, as if the talent scout's words had ignited a fire in him.

The memory of Toronto lingered in my mind, especially the scout's promise to "be in touch." While I wanted to protect Justin from disappointment, I couldn't ignore the possibility that this could be the start of something extraordinary.

I sat down with Justin one evening after dinner, his small hands strumming his guitar softly. "Justin," I said gently, "you know that even if we don't hear back from the scout, it doesn't mean you're not talented, right?"

He looked up at me with a confidence that took my breath away. "I know, Mommy. But I think they will."

Weeks passed with no word from the talent scout, but I didn't let it deter me. Every day, I practiced my guitar, sang songs, and even tried to write new ones. I performed at local events whenever I could, and the townspeople began to recognize me as the "little boy with the big voice."

One afternoon, Pattie received a call. She picked up the phone, her face a mix of curiosity and cautious hope. "Hello?"

The voice on the other end was the talent scout from Toronto. "Mrs. Mallette, we'd like to invite Justin to perform at a showcase in Toronto next month. It's a chance for him to be seen by more industry professionals."

Pattie's hand trembled as she held the phone. "That's…that's wonderful. Thank you so much."

When she hung up, her eyes were wide with a mix of excitement and fear. "Justin," she said, kneeling down to my level, "you've been invited to perform in Toronto again. This time, it's for a showcase."

Justin's Perspective

The word "showcase" sounded big and important, even though I didn't fully understand what it meant. All I knew was that it was another chance to perform, and I couldn't wait.

Pattie and I spent the next month preparing. She helped me pick out the songs I would sing, and we practiced every day. She even bought me a new outfit—a crisp white button-up shirt, black slacks, and shiny shoes.

"Looking sharp, buddy," she said with a smile as I tried it on.

The showcase was held in a large auditorium filled with people who looked important. The stage was enormous, and as I stood backstage waiting for my turn, I felt a flutter of nerves. Pattie knelt down beside me, her hands on my shoulders.

"You're going to do great, Justin," she said softly. "Just remember why you're doing this. It's about the music, not the crowd."

I nodded, taking a deep breath. When my name was called, I walked onto the stage, clutching my small guitar. The lights were blinding, and the audience was a sea of unfamiliar faces.

But the moment I strummed the first chord and began to sing, everything else faded away. It was just me and the music. I sang my heart out, pouring every ounce of emotion into the performance.

When I finished, the room erupted in applause. I looked out into the crowd and saw Pattie, her face glowing with pride.

Pattie's Perspective

Watching Justin on that stage was like seeing a glimpse of the future. He was so small, yet he commanded the attention of the entire room. The talent scout from before approached me after the performance.

"Your son has something special," she said. "We'd like to discuss the possibility of signing him with a management company."

My heart pounded. This was happening faster than I had anticipated. "I'll need some time to think about it," I said, trying to sound composed.

She nodded. "Of course. But don't wait too long. Opportunities like this don't come around often."

Justin's Perspective

I didn't fully understand what the talent scout meant, but I could see the mix of excitement and worry on Pattie's face as we drove back to Stratford.

"Mommy, what did she say?" I asked.

"She said you're very talented," Pattie replied with a smile. "And that we might have some decisions to make soon."

I didn't know what those decisions were, but I trusted Pattie to guide me. All I cared about was making music and sharing it with the world.

Life in Stratford continued, but the possibility of a bigger future loomed in the background. Pattie spent hours researching the music industry, trying to understand what signing with a management company would mean for both of us.

For me, it was business as usual. I played at local events, practiced every day, and dreamed of the next time I could perform on a big stage.

One evening, as Pattie and I sat together, she looked at me with a serious expression. "Justin, if we decide to move forward with this, it's going to change our lives. Are you ready for that?"

I didn't hesitate. "I'm ready, Mommy. I want to do this."
