Chapter 11: 11: The Night of the Bite

The night was quiet, the kind of stillness that felt unnatural, like the world was holding its breath. The moon hung high in the sky, casting pale light over the darkened woods, but even its glow couldn't pierce the dense canopy above. A light breeze rustled the leaves, but there was something else—a sense of impending danger that lingered in the air, thick and electric.

Scott and I stood at the edge of the forest, our breath coming in soft, anxious bursts as we gazed into the darkness. The rumors about the body being found, the brutal animal attacks in town, and the mysterious disappearances had only fueled our curiosity. But something else, something primal, was pulling us deeper into the woods, drawing us to the heart of the mystery.

"You sure about this?" Scott asked, his voice tight with hesitation. He glanced back toward town, as if wondering if he should just turn around and forget this whole thing. But we both knew that was impossible. Once the mystery of Beacon Hills had sunk its teeth into us, there was no way we could ignore it.

I nodded, even though I could feel the unease crawling under my skin. "Yeah. It's just a body, right? We've seen worse." I said it more to convince myself than him, though. We both knew the truth—the real danger wasn't just the body. It was whatever had caused the attacks, whatever had been stalking the woods.

Scott shifted on his feet, clearly unsettled. "But it's not just the body, though. You heard what people are saying. They think it's—"

"Yeah, I know," I cut him off. "They think it's a wolf. But we've seen the crazy rumors. The supernatural stuff." I took a step forward, pushing past the uncertainty. "We're not gonna know unless we go in."

He hesitated, but eventually he gave me a short nod, his expression resolute. "Okay. But if we get in over our heads—"

"We won't," I said, not even believing my own words.

We ventured into the woods, the cool night air brushing against our faces, the faint sound of branches creaking in the wind. The deeper we went, the more the sense of unease settled in my gut, growing heavier with each step.

The woods felt alive, watching us, listening to us. The further we walked, the more the trees seemed to close in around us, their branches twisting like fingers reaching out to grab us. We were deep enough that the lights from the town no longer reached us, and the darkness felt suffocating.

"Okay, I think we're getting close," I muttered, looking around nervously. "Let's just find this body and head back."

Scott nodded, though his eyes darted back and forth as if expecting something to jump out at us. I couldn't blame him. Something felt off about the whole situation. The woods had a weight to them tonight, a heaviness that made everything feel... wrong.

Then, without warning, a sound broke through the quiet—a low, guttural growl that sent chills crawling up my spine.

Scott froze, his hand instinctively reaching for me as if he knew instinctively that something wasn't right. "What was that?" he whispered, his voice tense.

I turned my head toward the sound, my senses on high alert. My heart hammered in my chest as I strained to listen. The growl came again, deeper this time, closer. Something was stalking us.

Before I could respond, a shadow moved between the trees, large and fast. I barely caught a glimpse of it, but what I saw made my blood run cold—a massive, hulking figure with glowing eyes, its form shifting in the moonlight like a predator stalking its prey.

"Run!" I shouted, grabbing Scott by the arm and pulling him backward.

We turned and sprinted through the woods, our footsteps crunching the dry leaves beneath us. But it was no use. The growl sounded again, closer this time, echoing through the trees like a hunter on the prowl.

Then, in an instant, it was upon us.

A blur of motion, faster than anything I'd ever seen, and before I could react, the creature lunged at us. I barely had time to throw my arms up to protect myself as claws raked across my chest, tearing through my jacket and skin.

I staggered back, pain shooting through me, but Scott wasn't far behind, and he lunged at the creature, trying to push it away. The Alpha Werewolf was massive, its eyes glowing a sickly yellow, and its body rippled with muscles that bulged unnaturally. It was a creature of nightmares, and we were no match for it.

"Scott! Get back!" I shouted, pushing him away as the creature turned on him. Its jaws snapped inches from Scott's face, and I watched, helpless, as it sank its teeth into his shoulder, lifting him off the ground like he was nothing more than a ragdoll.

"Scott!" I yelled, my voice hoarse with fear.

My body moved without thinking, adrenaline surging through me as I ran toward him. The beast's glowing eyes locked onto mine, and for a moment, I was frozen, trapped in its gaze. It was a predator, a creature of hunger and power, and I could feel it pulling me in, threatening to tear me apart.

But I couldn't let it take Scott. Not like this.

With a surge of strength I didn't know I had, I lunged forward, tackling the beast with all my might. We hit the ground hard, and I could feel the creature's claws digging into my side, but I didn't let go. The beast snarled, rolling to get back on its feet, but I was determined.

In the chaos, the Alpha werewolf suddenly released Scott, sending him crashing to the ground with a painful grunt. I took my chance, scrambling to my feet and pulling Scott out of the way.

"We need to go!" I yelled, pulling Scott by the arm. "Now!"

He was dazed, but he nodded, pushing himself up with a groan. We didn't need any more encouragement. As if sensing the fight was over, the Alpha Werewolf let out one final, echoing roar before disappearing into the woods, vanishing as quickly as it had come.

We didn't stop running until we were back in the safety of town, our breaths ragged, hearts racing. My chest burned from the gash the creature had left, but Scott's condition was worse—he was bleeding heavily from his shoulder, his movements sluggish.

"Are you okay?" I asked, panting.

Scott barely nodded, his face pale, his eyes unfocused. "What... was that thing?" he asked, his voice shaking.

"I—I don't know," I said, my mind reeling. "But it's not over. We've only just begun."

The realization hit me hard. Whatever that thing was, whatever it had done to us, it wasn't just an animal. It was something more. Something we were going to have to face. Together.
