Chapter 9: Journey to Fire Nation

(One month after leaving Water Nation)

It has been a month since Korra and Gon left the White Lotus and Water Nation behind. They had been on the boat for months and were learning the intricacies of water. Although they had mastered the element, they hadn't gone to the legends levels like Katara or Pakku, but they were nearing it.

Gon was also training Korra in the ways of the Four Elements martial arts and also Fired Bending. It is an art that uses the elements as the base, water for flexibility, fire for agility, earth for strength, and air for evasiveness. It made the user more powerful, and when used with bending, it was unparalleled. The martial arts style indirectly taught the user balance and control.

Korra and Gon sparred from time to time, and this was one of those times.

Korra launched an overhead kick attempting to incapacitate Gon. Still, he quickly dodged using the adaptability of the four elements tyle and attacked Korra's chi points, weakening the power in her legs.

"Ow, that hurts!!!" Korra said, limping towards Gon.

"Oh, sorry," Gon said, awkwardly scratching the back of his head.

"You don't know how to hold back," Korra barked.

"I am holding back," Gon laughed, "It's just that you have no balance. You attack without thinking of the consequences."

Korra looked pissed. This fight had been their fiftieth, and each time she had lost badly. The first time that they had fought each other, she had fainted from the attack. In these fights, she wasn't allowed to bend, so she had to fight with her skill alone, not just the Avatars power. She knew that if she got allowed to Bend, she would last longer.

"Hey, it is not my fault that someone didn't allow me to use my powers," Korra growled.

"Korra, you have to learn to fight without your elements," Gon said, "There might be a time when you don't have them and need something to fall back on, plus if you train this your control of the elements might get better."

"Okay, I am going to trust you," Korra said.

Gon nodded his head and smiled. What Korra did not know was that she was doing very well when it came to learning the martial arts. She has been slowly improving when it came to fighting and could probably beat some low-level Benders without having to Bend herself. The problem was her impulsiveness. She already had everything that it took to master the basics of the style but could not think strategically. The technique needed balance, meaning that you needed control over oneself, which she didn't have.

"Let us move on to your Fire Bending training," Gon said, "Have you mastered shaping fire yet?"

"Yes," Korra said, "I have been able to make squares, circles, and such."

Korra started to make different shapes out of the fire and juggle them around as if they were toys.

"Disperse the fire shapes," Gon said, "Since you have done this, can you try and shape the fire into weapons like arrows, shields, balls?"

"Okay," Korra said, "Why are we doing this again?"

"I want to teach you an attach," Gon said, "I call it fire molding. You change the shape of fire into a weapon and attack the enemy."

"What is the difference between this and just throwing fire at an enemy?" Korra asked.

"Just mold it!" Gon said with a smirk on his face.

Korra smiled and started to mold the fire out of frustration. She aims at the ice burg.

"What's so special about this anyway?" Korra thought to herself as she released the fire arrow. BOOM! Korra's eyes widened as she saw the ice burg blow into bits.

"What kind of fire bending is this exactly?!" Korra asked Gon keenly, "Any normal fire bending would have simply just melted the ice bur..."

Korra suddenly collapsed to her knees.

"Don't worry. It's only natural for you to be tired after using a high chi technique like that." Gon assured, "Fire molding is about gathering all the fire you can make and condensing it into a small and compact vessel to use."

Korra utterly in shock of the complexity and strength of the move, yet how easy it was to use.

"We are approaching the fire nation. Get some rest now as the battle ahead of us will be exhausting." Gon said sternly

They arrive at the fire nation. Korra and Gon leave the boat, and Korra checks her pockets for the keys. They were gone. She suddenly sees a group of low lives running away.

"Hey, Gon, they took our keys!" Korra said, concerned, "They're getting away," Gon smiled.

"This is perfect for your training." Gon said, "I'll be waiting here. Go and chase them down and get back the keys."

"Are you serious?" Korra groaned.

"I give you 30 minutes. GO." Gon answered.

It took Korra 20 minutes to chase them down as she wasn't very familiar with the fire nation. She corners them at an alley, and they finally stop.

"Just give up!" Korra said, "I've already cornered you."

Korra dodges a sudden attack from behind, "The fire nation shouldn't have to deal with water nation scum like you."

One of the delinquents said, "So that's how we're doing it, huh,?" Korra said.

She didn't have enough time to take them on, so she molded a small ball and threw it at the garbage can. The garbage can was blown to bits.

All the delinquents abruptly stopped attacking and bowed down with remorse.

"Sorry for troubling you!" They said to Korra as they quickly gave her the key and left.

"What was with that blow, and why is she wearing water nation attire but can use fire? Don't tell me she's the legendary avatar." One of the thugs thought to themselves.

Korra quickly went back towards the ship.

Gon saw this and said, "Just on time."

"I would have beaten them quickly if I had known the way," Korra huffed.

Gon laughed and said, "Let's go look for a fire bending master to teach you what I can't."
