"Fuck…my face is burning. Wait. My face is burning. MY FACE IS BURNING!" Luke sits up awake, doing his best to slap the fire away only to realize he wasn't burning anymore. He takes a glance around, putting the pieces together as he looks at the slightly open curtains coupled with the beam of sunlight that was pointing straight to where he was sleeping. He curses his brain for being fooled so easily as he rolls his shoulders back and climbs out of bed.
He stands tall in the cubicle of a room in his cheap tiny Virginia apartment. He looks around the cramped room, mourning his expensive penthouse apartment in Manhattan. Another aspect of his life ruined by the loss of his job.
He looks towards his ringing cell, snapping out of the depressive trance he had fallen in. He picks it up, looking at the caller ID and quickly answering. "Hello?"
"Hello Mr. Brooks! Just calling to remind you that the group will leave at 3:00 pm on the dot! You didn't respond to the confirmation message I sent last night so I figured I'd call!"
Luke freezes in place. Eyes sliding down to look at his alarm clock time. A strangled freaked out sound makes it's way out his throat as he clicks into overdrive and he starts getting ready in a rush. He clears his throat and tries to sound normal as he hurries through his routine.
"Right…Right. Sorry, I had an early night because I was so excited for today. I'm actually on my way now but traffic's kinda crazy…I might be the tiniest bit late but I will be there." He trips over a cardboard box, falling with a loud thud.
The lady stays quiet for a moment before speaking up. "Uh…are you alright Mr. Brooks?"
He rolls over on his back, rubbing his chin to soothe the pain. "Yeah…yeah. I just hit a stupid pothole." He gets up with a soft groan. "So I'll see you there Lina?"
"Yes sir! Goodbye and drive safe!" She hangs up.
Luke sets his phone down, grabbing a suitcase and throwing some clothes and essentials in it. He glances around the apartment one more time, lips pressing together as an unfamiliar emotion wells up in his chest at the sight of the small boring room. He lets out a breath, turning around and rushing out.
