Chapter 1: Raven’s Angel

Prologue

The fields blended together out the window as the train sped down the tracks, my mind blank. It'd been several days now since I came to this world after dying in my own, after a solid 67 years of life. Finding myself as a teenage female anthropomorphic grey wolf was a bit of a shock, which had left my brain mostly fried. Mostly the female part, since my previous life was spent as a guy.

A light tap on my shoulder caused me to turn to one of my escorts said something, offering me a sandwich. I silently nodded thanks to him as I took it. He was a black wolf of larger build, and stood a couple heads taller than I did. Someone said something behind me, and I turned to see my other escort, a female black wolf of a smaller build to myself.

The male wolf gave what looked like a full-body scoff at her reply. I turned back to the window as the two got into a conversation that I couldn't understand a single word of.

"…I hate this language barrier." I muttered, taking a bite out of the sandwich.

I paused, glancing down. "…Tastes like chicken?"

Everything went dark and it took me a moment to realize we'd entered a tunnel. I then glanced toward my escorts, they appeared to be excited. Perhaps we were getting close to our destination?

I turned my head back toward the window just in time to leave the tunnel, my jaw dropping. What I saw looked like a future version of New York City with dozens of skyscrapers set in the distance, their curved glass edges reflecting the sunlight in unimaginable ways causing the entire city to just sparkle. There were countless roofs of every color, shape, and size filling a valley as far as the eye can see, and judging on what I could see, the eyes from my new wolf body were much sharper than those of any human I'd met in my previous life.

The true shock though, came from the variety of animals. Not just mammals like a certain movie I had enjoyed, but almost every wild animal under the sun was present in some form or another. Not only that, but the ability for them to co-exist like this would literally be unheard of back home.

I felt the train begin to slow down before it entered another tunnel, eventually coming out into a large station with several platforms, it was crowded as bad if not more than New York's subway stations during rush hour. I followed My two escorts off the train and through the crowd, to a waiting taxi-looking car outside.

Again, I took note of how the writing everywhere appeared Japanese. It made me feel like I was in some alternate version of Tokyo. Getting into the vehicle, I looked at the driver as he said something. The male wolf replied as he climbed in himself quickly followed by the female. The ride through the city was quite the trip, I had never seen anything like it.

Then I saw it… What seemed to be a school of some sort, and we were heading right for it. It was big, white, and expensive-looking. But the thing that caught my attention was the sign. There were several languages scribbled all over it.

I just stared even as the vehicle came to a stop in front of the gates, till my escorts caught my attention to follow them. I took one last glance as I followed them to the gate, where a tall slender lamb was waiting, clipboard in hand. After exchanging words with her my escorts went back to the car, leaving me with this new mammal.

She handed me the clipboard and pen, gesturing patiently at the paper on it. There was a row of empty boxes on the right, and what looked to be several languages on the left. I quickly found the English option, which read: "If you're native tongue is English, mark this box" and marked it with the pen before handing it back to her.

She glanced towards the paper, seemingly bewildered by my choice, her eyebrows curved upward before she turned her gaze back to me. Humming in thought, she turned and set out toward what I could only assume to be a dorm building, if the multitude of balconies was anything to go off of.

Upon entering, I was apparently passed off to an older-looking tortoise woman behind a desk. Her movements were steady, but much faster than I expected and soon, we reached a door. Inside was a comfortable looking room, with a short coffee table and a number of cushions laying around, as well as a glass sliding door to a balcony.

To the right was what looked like a kitchen, and the left was a TV. There were also two doors, one on either side of the TV. Another door sat farther down the wall, but unlike the other two it was open, allowing me to see a large bathtub inside.

I turned back to the woman just in time to see the door close, leaving me alone in the room. The soft click of a lock told me I wouldn't be going anywhere soon.

"Well, at least this isn't a jail cell." I sighed, right before my stomach growled slightly. I made my way toward the kitchen, curious if there was even anything there.

On the counter was a stand with bananas, which happened to be one of my favorites. Ten minutes in I had just finished off the last banana, when a soft click caught my attention. I turned just in time to see the door open, and a rabbit hop through.

"Ah, so you are the new arrival, no? " His accent was… odd. I just shrugged.

"I guess?" I blinked. "You… know English?"

He gave me a grin. "You are lucky I happened to stop by today of all days, otherwise you'd have to wait for whatever aid they could track down. Now, I'm sure you have questions, and I'll answer as many as I can."

"What does everyone else speak?"

He blinked, raising an eyebrow. "The most common language is Japanese, as that is where most of us originate from. That's the first thing you ask?" I shrugged.

"I know I'm a female grey wolf in a world of anthropomorphic animals with advanced technology, so I don't really need that answered straight away. I don't particularly care as to the name of the city or country as that won't really help me much, plus I have a feeling I'll learn that in time anyways. But… what do you mean 'originate from Japan'? Isn't this an entirely different world?"

He stared at me for a moment. "Those from the western world have always been odd." He muttered under his breath, showcasing just how powerful my ears were. "To put it simply, yes this is a different world. One in which everyone is, or descended from someone who came from another world. Most come from Japan and the surrounding countries. But a few, a few like yourself, come from other places. But that is so rare, that only a select few can even communicate with you."

I nod slowly, mostly understanding what he was saying. "Okay. I think I get it. So… What happens now?"

He dropped a small stack of papers on the table. "First, get you on your first step to adjusting to your second chance at life." He said with a smile.

About 20 minutes later I had finished reading what was, apparently, an introduction to the world I now lived in. There was a knock at the door before a white vixen, perhaps a head and a half shorter than me entered. Her fur was almost a silvery white, with brilliant crystal blue eyes. I shook my head to stop myself from staring. She asked the rabbit something in what I now knew was Japanese, Mr. Haneagaru as he'd introduced himself as, quickly replied.

Turning to me, the fox fixed me with a look almost as if contemplating if I was worth the effort to speak to. "What's your name, wolf?"

I blinked at the curt tone she used, just slightly caught off-guard by it. "James."

Her eyebrow raised. "What is your name, Wolf? Think carefully." I suddenly realized what she was saying.

After a moment, I spoke firmly. "Raven"

She nodded in approval. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Raven. I am Tenshi, and I will be your acting aid for the foreseeable future."
