Chapter 1: The Eve of the Beginning

No one was waiting for him at home. A dry chuckle choked out Theodore's throat as he breathed in the fresh sea air. He stared up at the large skyscrapers that littered Castelia's skyline with a soft gaze. Giving a soft smile, Theodore shook his head as he continued to make his way home.

Dodging through the Alleyways, he was trying to avoid the main crowd before bumping into someone. His prepubescent voice squeaked out, "Ah- Sorry! I didn't mean to bump into you, Gym Leader Burgh." The man in front of him had curly, brown hair with a light, red scarf curling around his neck. He wore a plain, green t-shirt and a white under shirt underneath his own t-shirt and multi-colored, striped pants that reached down to his legs.

Burgh's voice cut through the Alleyways silence in a soft, yet eloquent manner, "Theodore. I hope you are doing fine? While I want to continue to chat with your interests in what you consider art, I am afraid I must cut this short."

Theodore gave a brief nod while his ears burned in embarrassment, "Yeah. Yeah, that's understandable. Answering your first question, Um. I am . . Fine as one might be in my situation. Not well-" Waving his hands in a placating manner, Theodore moved out of Burgh's way and continued, "But I am trying to get home after a long day of cloud watching, reading up some few interesting things in the library, and generally getting lost in thought."

He walked past Burgh and went down towards the exit to one of the other mainstreets. Giving a wave, Theodore shouted, "Have a good evening, Burgh! I'll see you in your gym tomorrow." He turned before he could see that Burgh was giving a wave back. A soft smile etched onto his face as he heard Burgh give a chuckling reply, "You too, kid. You too."

Theodore's ears burned even harder at Burgh's chuckle, "Dang it, Burgh. . You're making me blush. " Theodore tittered under his breath as he made it towards the evening crowd. He followed the crowd like a duckling as he maneuvered towards the left side as he stared at the building entrances.

When he found a building that held a rundown, neon glowing sign, he briefly looked up at the sign that read 'Honey's Apartments'. Giving a brief snort at the name for what felt like the hundredth time, Theodore moved toward the entrance and turned toward the crowd. A brief flash of excitement filled his being as he looked at the plethora of pokemon that littered the streets. From simple bird pokemon like Pidoves staring down at people from rooftops or balconies to street pokemon like Gurrdur.

He breathed out uncomfortably as he turned back to the entrance of the building. His left hand nervously scratched his arm as he took a step forward into the building proper itself. He made it into the lobby as the receptionist briefly glanced in his direction with an eyeful of pity. A frown tugged at his lips as he caught that little detail. Shaking his head, he stalked towards the elevator.

Pressing the button on the wall near the elevator, Theodore waited for the elevator itself. He could hear the elevator come down very slowly. The wall was horribly dirty and most likely violating so many health inspection codes it wasn't even funny. He stared at the krusty floor in disgust and shivered as a pit of horrendous feelings began to curl in his gut.

A soft, static ding echoed throughout the small elevator holding area. The door stutteringly opened up as he walked into an unclean carpet smell. He pressed the 6th floor button and the elevator made the same stuttered movement. Eventually the door closed and began movement upwards. The light shining down on him began to flicker on and off.

A soft, annoyed grunt escaped Theodore's lips as his gut feeling continued to coil into an uncomfortable feeling. The soft hissing of the elevator could be heard as Theodore made it to the sixth floor. The door opened up in the familiar stuttering movement. Theodore's mind remained blank as the feeling got worse and worse as he made it towards his home.

When he opened up the door to his parent's apartment with the apartment key he had, the unfortunately familiar smell of alcohol entered his nostrils. His hand clenched as he heard the soft sniffling of his mother from his parent's room. An explosive sigh escaped his lips as that pit of disgust exploded into an uncomfortable rage.

He glared towards the living room in which he had found his own father drinking some cheap swill watching some garbage television show. His teeth grinded in frustration as his jaw locked up in pure rage as the sniffling continued. He could imagine the black eye or deep, purple bruise on his mother's skin. He could imagine the insults in which his father spewed to his mother. He could imagine the flashes of pain which his mother suffered under his father's drunken stupor. He could only imagine what his mother could do when he finally left. He could imagine and only imagine until tomorrow.

His nervous scratching turned into furious scratching as small flakes of skin peeled off his arms. Theodore breathed in and then breathed out as he turned his head away from the situation. He could only imagine and wish he was born to a different, loving father. A snarl etched its way onto his face as he heard his father's drunken, incoherent muttering, "Arceus damned woman. Can't even do anything right. I do all the work here! I make the money here at the household!"

Theodore held his tongue as he began to angrily stomp away from his father's idiocy. The floor creaked under his rage filled stomps as he made it towards his room. He opened the door to his room as he flipped out his smartphone and closed the door behind him. Unlocking the lock screen, he tapped the PIM, Pokemon Instant Messaging, app. The sound of furious typing was the only sound coming out of his room.

The0: Hey. How are you doing?

Bugboylover341 : Haha. Just got done with researching in the forest behind my place. All the bugs are fascinating! Anyways, hbu? ;)

The0: Angry. Intolerably angry. Just came home to hear sniffling with my father hooked up on some alcohol. Somedays I just want to walk up to him while he sits there drunk and beat him up to the inch of death. But that wouldn't go anywhere. Enough of my ranting, tho. Mind telling me what you found? Need the distraction lol.

Bugboylover341: Yeah. I understand. I found a local Joltik population. It must've come from a trainer that either died in the forest or released a pokemon. From how small the population is- It was only a few months ago. I'm going to need to catch and move them as it's not safe.

The0: A joltik population, hah? That's pretty cool. You see them commonly here in Unova. Thanks tho, mate. I'm gonna sign off early. I've cooled off some, so Imma attempt to sleep.

Bugboylover341: That's cool. Have a good evening, Theo.

Theodore turned off and gave out a sigh. He got off his bed and did his usual evening routine which included showering, eating dinner, and playing some video-games while at the same time ignoring his parents entirely. The whole entire situation sucked in his own opinion.

In his pajamas he curled up on his bed and slowly drifted off to sleep.
