Chapter 1
'I didn't think it was possible, but I might just die of pure boredom.' Thought Alice as she lay in bed with her headphones on. Trapped at home for over a month thanks to this god-forsaken virus, Alice was beginning to get a little stir crazed in her tiny one-bedroom apartment. She had never been a very outgoing person. Being your typical homebody, she preferred lounging around. Just reading and curling up on her couch to a good series on Netflix.
Unfortunately, she hit her limit, which was high for her scaling. She had watched every movie and series on her recommended list and read every chapter book she currently owned in her home. She had even taken to playing video games on her cell phone, which she hadn't done in years. Nothing seemed to be able to quench her never-ending boredom.
As she lay in bed listening to Paramore for the umpteenth time and scrolling through websites trying to find a web novel to read, a neon blue popup appeared on her screen. "You are the only Except…." 'THE HELL IS THIS!' she thought. Displayed before her was a simple question. "Are You Bored? Y/N".
Alice Must have sat there for a full minute in silence, staring at the redundant question. 'I've been stating I was for the last three weeks.' She thought. Biting her bottom lip and squinting her eyes, she scrutinized the popup. 'Someone's screwing with me! But who?' she thought.
The Only friend she had, hadn't spoken to her in 4 weeks. Zara had been giving her the cold shoulder because she thought Alice wasn't giving her enough attention. The truth was, it was Zara's fault. The girl had gotten a boyfriend before winter break and had basically been ghosting her since. But when he broke up with her a month later, she came crawling back, wanting to spend every waking minute with Alice. Being the gracious person she was, Alice took her back. But due to the excessive amount of attention, Zara craved daily…. Alice snapped. After three and a half-hour talk over the phone about Zara's Ex, sweet, sweet Alice screamed and hung up the phone.
Having called her back twice and only reaching her impersonal voicemail. Zara sent an excessively long-worded text message stating how wrong she felt. Alice's short and to-the-point reply was, "You need a man, not a friend." Since then, Alice had not heard a single word from her alleged friend. 'Couldn't be her.' She thought. Alice had no parents or siblings to think of, being an orphan and all. So that thought was out of the window as well.
She looked back at the screen and noticed the question had a thirty-second timer on it. 'So, your screwing with me, and you're impatient.' She thought. "Okay," she stated aloud. "I'll play!" She moved her mouse over and clicked the Yes confirmation only to receive a second question. "Would you like to start anew?" Alice's right eyebrow slowly rose as she scoffed at the computer screen. 'Clearly, whoever this is, knows about my love of Self-Insert fanfictions…" she pondered. "As if I have so much going for me." She stated depressively. Again, she clicked the yes confirmation.
The moment she did so, the screen flashed white a few dozen times as a mouth with a devilish grin appeared on the computer screen. 'The hell!' she thought as the sentient mouth began to speak. "Didn't think you'd be MAD enough to go thru with it." As the conscious mouth finished its statement, a pair of golden eyes blinked into existence above them, locking on to poor sweet Alice's corresponding blue ones. "Oh, someone is definitely screwing with me!" yelled Alice as she was getting ready to slam the laptop shut. "On the contrary." stated the mouth as its smile continued to widen to the point that Alice's began to hurt in sympathetic pain. "After witnessing your boredom that seemed to be on par with my own, I decided to reach out to you to alleviate us both." As the mouth spoke, Alice continued to scrutinize the sentient mouth. 'This thing seems oddly familiar.' She thought. "So, tell me, Alice... would you like to play a game with me?"
Alice continued to stare the thing in the eyes as she questioned her sanity. 'Could this be real?' She thought. In correspondence to her mental question, the mouth blatantly smirked at her. That smirk was all the answer she needed. "Screw it!" she said. "I'm in." "Excellent," replied the mouth. Not being able to contain her curiosity Alice began Firing questions at the mouth like a machine gun. In response to her many questions, the mouth stated, "You may call me Chessur. I chose you because you reminded me of little of a small girl I once met many years ago who so happened to have the exact same name as yourself. To your final question, no, you may not personally select the world I will be sending you to. Where's the fun in that? Instead, you will be using a roulette to determine that."
"I can live with that," Alice replied. "Will I receive a cheat when I enter this world?" she asked. "Of course," replied Chessur. "You will receive a second roulette in corresponds to the selection of your world." "Awesome." Replied Alice with a smile mirroring Chessur's own. "Then let's get started," she finished. The moment she said, so a roulette screen appeared beneath the mouth. Alice wasted no time in selecting the roll. Sweating in nervousness, she awaited her future as it flashed between many books, mangas, and movies she was familiar with. Alice began tapping the keyboard in impatience as the roulette started to slow as she ground her teeth. Chessur watched all of this in an abated breath as he pondered. 'This girl is quite intriguing. I definitely chose the right one to entertain me…'
At that thought, the roulette finally came to a halt.
