Chapter 8: Energy (First)

"I will start with the Qi Cultivation first." Having made his decision, he concentrated on the lone wisp that was the cultivation method for Ninefold Genesis Ascension Art. Extending a strand of his mental focus, he willed the wisp to come closer and assimilate with his mind. Su Yan had no idea whether it would be like that informational wisp and if he would be able to absorb it all.

Turns out, he needed not worry as the entire glob of wisp was sucked right into his being. His comfort at the ease of assimilation lasted only a single breath, as the next thing he knew, his whole body started shaking like a fish on a frying pan. Pain coalesced around his gut, but he couldn't utter even a single word in protest.

Su Yan groaned as sweat beaded on his forehead. This was the third time today when he had to suffer because of the jade slip, and he was coming to an understanding that future cultivation was bound to be just as painful, if not more. Hopefully he could get used to it soon. Hopefully.

How long the pain lasted, he had no idea, but to him it had felt like days had passed. Judging by the state of the sun, though, he was fairly certain only a few hours had passed since he first found the cave.

By the time pain had receded, Su Yan was nursing a headache and feeling extremely exhausted. It wasn't helped by the fact that his hair had turned a shade lighter, bordering on gray. It would've been a cause for worry, but the new information assuaged any concerns he had for his changing physique.

Su Yan had thought of the wisps as mere thought fragments, mere shards that carried knowledge or information. This experience had proven him wrong. He focused inside his dantian to feel out a hazy mist gathered there. This was the Primal Genesis Energy that the manual had imparted to him. He had wondered how he was going to be cultivating it, but this answered most of his questions.

Sighing, he pulled himself up and against the wall. He had to sort the information in his head before he started cultivating. Taking a deep breath, he adopted a meditative posture and started picking on the knowledge inside his brain.

The information was like a glob of light surrounded by a formless mist. He tried probing it but found himself repelled. Startled for a moment, he ruminated on the cause of his predicament. A thought struck him, and he tugged at the Primal Genesis Qi inside his dantian.

Pulling it along the channels of his body, he pushed it against the mist and watched as it melted like ice under the solar glare. Su Yan smiled at the accomplishment and tried even harder, yet found the Qi having no effect after parting a layer of the mist.

"There seems to be a barrier of some sort that's stopping me from accessing further levels of the cultivation method." Thinking such, he gave up on the fruitless efforts to peel off the mist and focused on the portion that was revealed to him.

Ninefold Genesis Ascension Art was a complicated cultivation method with a total of nine levels. His Qi had only been able to reveal the first level, which focused on the elemental cultivation of Water and Wind. By some advanced application, it wouldn't be difficult to create Ice also. But that wasn't the point of this level. Instead it was incorporating the properties of these elements into his Primal Genesis Qi. According to the manual, doing so would enhance the quality of his Qi and birth new attributes.

"If it's like this, then does that mean further levels would require a higher quality of Qi?" Su Yan mulled over and found the possibility to be likely. It would also explain why his Qi wasn't able to pierce the next layer of the mist.

It was no use wasting any more time with what was possibly an insurmountable wall. Instead, Su Yan focused on the knowledge that was revealed to him. As he soaked in the information of the very first level of the cultivation method, his form shifted slightly, his breath more leveled as he started to circulate the mist inside his dantian.

A strand of Qi was pulled from the atmosphere, sucked through his nose and mouth. As he lacked any body tempering, his skin lacked the permeability to allow Qi to pass through. Instead he took whatever he could through inhalation and channeled it through his meridians.

As the Qi entered into the dantian, it started mingling with the mist that was the Primal Genesis Energy. Like a sponge that soaked up water, the Primal Qi devoured the normal Qi and assimilated it into itself. Su Yan noted a slight growth in the misty cloud. It was meager compared to what it had absorbed, but that was the pain of cultivating with such a peerless method.

As he started to gather more Qi inside his dantian, the faster the mist rotated, and subsequently, it increased his rate of absorption. It was phenomenal and absolutely terrifying in what it could mean. The Primal Genesis Qi seemed to have the property of attracting other forms of energy, which translated to his increase in cultivation. Unfortunately, it was balanced by the absurd requirements in terms of what it demanded.

In the end, Su Yan wasn't able to condense even a single mote before he felt a growing sense of unease. He had to leave before the young master and his cronies caught up to him. And in his current condition it wouldn't even be a struggle.

Sighing, he opened his eyes and stifled a yawn. Stretching his arms, he crawled out of the cave. The sun seemed to be ready to settle beyond the horizon, and Su Yan deemed the time to be about right for running away. It still felt surreal that he had ended up with such an amazing opportunity, but he promised to make the most of it.
