Kang Jun walked Elder Kang to his office silently. The mood around them was tense and Elder Kang didn't know why.
What had happened that Kang Jun would have to take him aside? Did something bad actually happen between him and Lu AnLing?
Elder Kang was worried.
Once inside the office, both men sat down. Feeling as if the atmosphere in the room was choking him, Elder Kang opened his mouth nervously but before he could say anything, Kang Jun put his hands together and said,
"Is Mei Xue my daughter."
Hearing this, the Elder's mouth twitched. The old man was quiet for a moment as he examined Kang Jun's face, and then he said, "yes."
Kang Jun furrowed his eyebrows and paused.
Seeing this, Elder Kang felt his body begin to freeze over. He knew his grandson. He would not mention something like this unless he had solid proof, so there was no point in lying. The man was just allowing the elder to tell him with his own mouth before all hell broke loose.
Kang Jun's hands were balled up into a fist and he gritted his teeth but he still managed to give off a calmness Elder Kang didn't expect.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Kang Jun asked.
Elder Kang: "It wasn't by choice... but by necessity."
Kang Jun furrowed his eyebrows once more. "Necessity? Explain."
Elder Kang felt his heart beat. He remembered when he and his wife had adopted Kang Mei Xue. She had wanted the child to be a legitimate Kang heir. Back then, no one was sure if Kang Jun of Kang Zhi would win the battle, but Elder Mistress Kang favored Kang Jun.
Taking the child under her wing was a no brainer for the woman. At first Elder Kang didn't believe in taking in illegitimate children. He had already done it too much for Kang Mu's sake and the sake of the family, however, he couldn't go against his wife's decisions.
"You and Zhi were so busy with the company that neither you nor he would have been able to deal with the stress of what you both had done back then... after a while, it just became harder to talk to you both about it."
Kang Jun raised an eyebrow. "Eldest brother had a child, also?"
Hearing this, Elder Kang froze. He had not meant to say that.
Though, Kang Jun wasn't necessarily shocked. With the dots he had connected, he understood that Kang Mingyu was the child of Anna and that Anna had slept with someone at Hotel Helios. If the Kang's adopted the child, then it would mean the child had Kang blood within them.
It was certain now that Kang Mei Xue was Kang Jun's daughter but when it came to Kang Mingyu it was a bit complicated. His father could either be Kang Zhi or Kang Jun and Kang Jun didn't believe he had slept with more than one woman that night. All that was left was Kang Zhi.
Kang Jun wasn't quite sure how he ended up with Lu AnLing or how Kang Zhi ended up with Anna but Kang Jun was going to watch the rest of the videos that night in order to find out the truth.
Not hearing the elder answer him, Kang Jun already had his answer but he pressed more.
Kang Jun: "Is there any other child I don't know about."
Saying this, Kang Jun felt his heart squeeze. He started straight into Elder Kang's eyes, ready to see if there was any semblance of a lie.
"I don't know. You know how your father is, I can't confirm that." Elder Kang sighed.
Rephrasing the question, Kang Jun said, "I meant do I or Zhi have other children?"
Elder Kang shook his head. "No."
Kang Jun never took someone's words for truth. Even when it came to Elder Kang but for the most part, the man believed in the elders words.
Feeling his heart hurt with the mention of the children, Kang Jun changed topics.
"What about their mother's?"
Elder Kang's eyes filled with guilt. "They're both dead..."
The pain in the elder's eyes was so real that Kang Jun was slightly taken aback.
"Who were they? How did they die?" Kang Jun asked, not caring if his grandfather wanted to drop the subject.
Elder Kang: "I never inquired who they were. What I understood was that they were from low-class families, if necessary they could be paid off... As for their deaths, I was told that one died during child birth..."
Kang Jun internally scoffed. 'Who died during childbirth nowadays...' he wanted to say, but he didn't dare. He didn't want to reveal too much information to Elder Kang. He still wasn't sure who was in on the kidnappings. He would lay low for a while as he gathered intel.
Kang Jun was already thinking of dismissing the man, but Elder Kang hadn't finished his sentence.
Elder Kang: "the other died by suicide."
Hearing this, Kang Jun felt his body shiver. Didn't Lu AnLing say that Anna had committed suicide?
"When did she commit suicide?" Kang Jun asked coldly.
"Right after she gave birth to the child. It was due to postpartum depression."
Hearing this, Kang Jun frowned. Anna had indeed died from suicide but not right after Kang Mingyu's birth and Lu AnLing had obviously not died during childbirth or suicide... Kang Jun didn't understand why these things were so detailed, so he asked,
"And who told you about all this?"
Elder Kang gave his grandson a look and then he answered matter-of-fairly, "Chong Wei. He then reported this to Secretary Rong."
***
It took a while for Elder Kang and Kang Jun to get out of the office but once they did, they were treated to an adorable scene.
In the kitchen, Lu AnLing and Rong Lihua we're eating with the kids. Usually, Kang Mei Xue and Kang Mingyu were careful about how they acted but in Kang Jun's home, all worries were left at the doorstep.
The two little rascals quickly gulped their food.
According to Rong Lihua, the kids were doing such a thing because they were excited to taste the macarons Lu AnLing had brought back for them.
Seeing the way they mannerlessly ate, Lu AnLing laughed. She had been the same when she was a child. Her father would usually scold her for such behavior, but she wouldn't do this to the two. At least not yet, Lu AnLing was glad to see the two relax.
Lu AnLing wasn't sure how long Kang Mei Xue could stay with them, but she hoped that soon she and Kang Jun could meet Elder Mistress Kang and settle things so that Lu AnLing and Kang Jun could finally raise their daughter.
Looking at her from afar, Kang Jun assumed what thoughts weighed on her mind.
The man walked up to her, but suddenly, her phone buzzed.
Lu AnLing looked down at it. Then, when he eyes glanced over it, a frown formed on her lips.
Seeing this, Kang Jun leaned over her and wrapped his arms around her. As he did this, Kang Mei Xue and Kang Mingyu stopped eating and looked at the man jealousy. They wanted to hold her two, but what they truly wanted was to be between the couples embrace. But still, the two were afraid to voice this.
Not noticing their looks, Kang Jun spoke to Lu AnLing,
"What's wrong, my love?"
Lu AnLing gestured to her phone. On it, there were two messages.
One was from Lu Shuya and the other was an unknown number.
Lu Shuya: [They set the date for the reunion. Remember you must come. ]
Unknown Number: [Hello there, I am your new manager. Come to Halo Stars tomorrow, around noon. We will discuss your career opportunities, also.]
As she read both those messages, Lu AnLing wished she could go back to France, where her life was so much simpler.
Seeing her dejected face, Kang Jun kissed Lu AnLing on the top of the head and said, "Good luck."
To this, Lu AnLing gave a dry laugh.
