It took a moment for the whole Kang family to gather and sit down.
On one side, sat Kang Nianxi, Kang Mu, Mo Ruyi and Qiao Lan, while on the other, Kang Liang, Kang Liu Ran, Lu Xia, Lu AnLing and Kang Jun sat.
By Kang Nianxi's side, there was an empty spot for Wang Tingting, whom elder Kang had assumed would be there, but the woman was nowhere to be found.
Seeing this, Qiao Lan gestured to Kang Nianxi who said, "She wasn't feeling well."
Once Kang Nianxi had said this, Kang Mu looked around and saw Lu Xia and Lu AnLing, he frowned but he did not say anything, it took Feng Zhengyi to speak for his thoughts to be out in the open.
Feng Zhengyi: "Why are there outsiders here?"
Hearing this, Kang Jun and Kang Liu Ran glared at Feng Zhengyi and said simultaneously,
"She's my wife. Not an outsider."
Hearing each others voices, they looked at each other awkwardly but Lu AnLing and Lu Xia who sat side by side exchanged looks. They wanted to snicker but they stopped themselves.
Kang Mu, who had heard what was said, suddenly stood up and said, "Kang Liu Ran, you married in secret too?!"
The man then turned to Elder Kang like a child hoping not to get scolded but all that he was met with was Elder Kang's stern voice,
"Sit down!"
Kang Mu did as he was told and then Elder Kang began the family meeting without answering Feng Zhengyi's question.
If it was anyone else who did this, Feng Zhengyi would have been angered but Elder Kang was the family head, when it came to such a formal meeting, she, like every other woman in the family, had no say.
Elder Kang: "We are here today to answer some concerns about Kang Jun's marriage. But before any of you speak, you should all know that due to this marriage, Jun has become the family head... anyways, anyone who has something to say, speak, or forever hold your peace."
Hearing such a thing, Qiao Lan frowned. She wanted to say something but she refused to be the first one so she waited for someone else to speak first, thankfully for her, Kang Mu spoke.
"I can't accept this! We planned out an engagement with a prominent family and you ruined it so completely! You made us a laughing stock today. How will I explain this to Mrs. Feng?"
Kang Jun shrugged. "Didn't you listen, Feng Yan and I had an agreement. There won't be any reason to apologize."
Hearing this, Kang Mu frowned hard.
"You can't just secretly get married without telling anyone. You probably haven't known this woman for too long either. How do you know if she's a good woman! She was extremely rude to me the last time we met..." Kang Mu tried to find every reason to fault Lu AnLing and this annoyed not only Kang Jun but Lu Xia. Seeing Lu Xia glare at him, Kang Mu was going to say something to Kang Liu Ran but first, he needed some validation so he turned to Mo Ruyi and said, "Isn't this ridiculous?"
Mo Ruyi shrugged. "She's the woman Kang Jun chose. Do you think my son would make a bad choice?"
Hearing his wife say this, Kang Mu's face became alarmed, he then turned his body towards the indifferent woman.
Kang Mu: "No... I didn't mean it that way."
"I know." Mo Ruyi said before turning to Kang Jun and sighing. "Jun, you shouldn't have been so hasty to marry. This family has done so much for you, you should have at least informed us if you'd planned to get married. I know that it would have been a much harder road to take, but marrying without parental consent will only cause you problems in the future."
Mo Ruyi did not have an opinion of Lu AnLing as of yet, and neither did she like how Kang Mu was putting so much blame on Kang Jun. Whether the man made a bad decision was yet to be seen but there were some traditions a person should not mess with. She knew this best...
In her younger years, she had run away and married her high school sweetheart. She had given up her family, her life and her scholarship to a good university to have a family with the man and in the end, all this had caused her was pain and strife.
The man she had loved had killed himself after his business venture had failed and she had had to crawl back to her family but they rejected her.
If it hadn't been for Feng Zhengyi, Mo Ruyi would have been begging on the streets, trying to create a better life for her son. Since no one wanted to hire a woman who was smarter than them...
Looking deeply at her son, Mo Ruyi prayed that her scolding would be enough for the Elders not to do anything rash to Kang Jun. If he were to be kicked out of the Kang family, Mo Ruyi had no idea what she would do.
Meanwhile, seeing how the situation was turning out, Kang Liang was a bit annoyed so he took a deep breath, and loudly said, "Aren't you guys being a bit unfair?"
Mo Ruyi and Kang Mu's eyes turned to the boy.
Kang Liang: "You guys were the ones putting pressure on elder brother to marry but now you're retracting that because he didn't marry the one that you wanted?"
"No... it's not because of that..." Kang Mu tried to explain but Kang Liang didn't allow them.
"It's exactly that!" the boy exploded. "What's so bad about Lu AnLing? You don't even know anything about her? She's way better than any of brothers previous fiancées, and yes, I'm including Rong Yue Wan."
Hearing Kang Liang's words Lu AnLing was touched. She didn't know she had left such an impression on the man. She just knew that he liked her voice and that was all but the two hadn't gotten much chance to get close.
But to Kang Liang, that kind of thing didn't matter. When he was growing up he had been the closest to Kang Jun. because of this, the boy knew him best. Kang Jun had never been happy in the Kang family. He had always sought to leave but because of his familial responsibilities and the promises he had made, Kang Jun had had no choice but to stay...
Now with Lu AnLing by his side, Kang Liang could see that Kang Jun no longer cared if he stayed or left. As long as his lover was by his side he was happy.
From the sidelines, Qiao Lan could see a sparkle in Kang Liang's eye while he spoke of Lu AnLing.
This caused her mind to wander. Maybe she hadn't been wrong... Maybe Kang Liang did have feelings for Lu AnLing.
With that thought in mind, Qiao Lan said, "My oh my, aren't we playing favorites?"
Hearing this, Kang Liang shot Qiao Lan a glare, "Not playing favorites. There was never a competition, to begin with."
Feeling his glare, Qiao Lan frowned. "I have no idea why you hate me so much but let me tell you, that girl isn't a perfect saint either."
Kang Liang's face twisted. "You have no idea why is hate you? It's because you're a stone-cold bit—"
"LIANG!" Elder Kang said, stopping Kang Liang's sentence. The boy hadn't even gotten halfway through the things he wanted to say. Looking between Qiao Lan and Kang Liang, Elder Kang sighed, "If you both want to fight. Get out. And let me clarify something, we aren't here to insult the newest member of our family. We are here to discuss Kang Jun's marriage. As in whether you accept it or not, and why, if you must explain yourselves."
Looking over the table of children, Elder Kang felt his head throb. He knew this was going to be problematic but he didn't expect to have to mediate so quickly.
Hearing what his father had said, Kang Mu sighed, "Fine. When it comes to the marriage, It's already been done so I don't have a say about it. But I can't accept such a rushed process..."
Lu Xia and Kang Liang raised an eyebrow but Kang Liang was the only one who spoke, "What does that even mean? Do you accept it or not?"
Kang Mu hesitated for a second, "I... don't."
Then it was Mo Ruyi's turn. Usually, the women of the Kang family did not have a say, but since Mo Ruyi was Kang Jun's mother, she would have a say whether the elders liked it or not.
Mo Ruyi: "What's done is done. I accept. But I'll determine Jun's wife's worth on my own."
Lu AnLing felt uncomfortable by how her in-laws were speaking about her like she wasn't there, but it wasn't time to speak as of yet, so she just internalized their words.
Feeling her tense up, Kang Jun gently brushed his thumb on the back of the hand which he held so warmly. Because of this, Lu AnLing unconsciously shifted her body closer to him.
Lu AnLing could feel a cold aura coming from Kang Jun, but compared to the heated tension being spread within the room, Kang Jun's coldness was comforting.
The two found strength in each other...
As the couple fell into their own world, Qiao Lan felt her heart palpitate.
Qiao Lan technically did not have a say in these situations either, but after hearing Mo Ruyi's answer, Qiao Lan turned to look between Elder Kang and Feng Zhengyi and said sweetly, "Elder Kang, Madame Kang, since I've been officially adopted into the Kang family, do I have a say?"
Elder Kang froze for a second, he wasn't sure what to say, but then, Kang Jun spoke.
Kang Jun: "Speak."
Qiao Lan looked at Kang Jun with confusion, but then, realizing why Kang Jun had answered, Elder Kang nodded.
"Jun is the family head now. What he says goes."
Hearing this, Qiao Lan felt envy and rage burn within her. This was supposed to be rightfully Kang Zhi's. Meaning, it was supposed to be hers! If Kang Jun hadn't murderer Kang Zhi, she wouldn't have to be lower than Kang Jun, ever...
Swallowing her ill intentions, Qiao Lan looked at both Kang Jun and Lu AnLing and said, "I don't think it's right to accept someone we know nothing about into the family... we haven't even accepted Tingting yet, and she and Nianxi have been married for years!"
Hearing this, Kang Nianxi froze. He did not agree with Qiao Lan nor his father but neither did he know enough about Lu AnLing to accept her into the family when his own wife was still fighting hard to please his family members. So instead of voting, Kang Nianxi said, "I'm not voting."
Qiao Lan and Kang Mu were shocked about this, but before they could say anything, Elder Kang, looked to Kang Liang and said, "Do I even need to ask you?"
Kang Liang smirked. "Of course, I accept."
After Kang Liang had spoken, Kang Liu Ran did not take a second to think. He just said, "I accept, also"
There was no other answer for him. Kang Jun's marriage had nothing to do with him. And, even if he wanted to reject it, it wouldn't change the fact that Kang Jun was already married.
In the end, yes, Kang Jun was the heir, but this was not a title someone could keep forever. Kang Liu Ran planned to keep fighting for the position until the end. Fair and square.
Either way, even if he had wanted to reject it, Lu Xia would be mad at him for it and he did not want to have marital problems so early in their lives.
After all this had been said, Elder Kang was about to say that he accepted also, but then, suddenly, Feng Zhengyi spoke.
"I reject."
Elder Kang did not expect Feng Zhengyi to speak. Usually, in moments like this, the woman was nowhere to be found so this was surely a turn of events.
"This girl, her name is Lu AnLing right?" Feng Zhengyi's eyes then sharpened on Elder Kang, causing the rest of the room to stare at her with confusion. "She is a family member of Lu Li Jing. Isn't she, Guanting?"
Sorry for the cliffhanger. I'll publish one more chapter before the day ends, it was supposed to be finished today but I ended up passing out yesterday without completing it.
