Chapter 1: Everything will return

I thought I could escape from a very annoying thing, which followed and haunted me wherever I went. Every time I meet IT, I fall down. Now, several years past my last failure and all the «good» things I have ever done to my enemies and friends, I`m ready. At last.

I`m going to get on with my old plan. Oh, you cannot imagine how many years I`ve spent developing my skills only for my wish to come true! I gave in many times, and now I`ll go for it.

But I want to go in for my plan seriously. I`ll overcome any obstacle on my way, break through any prison and in the end I`ll handle everything.

`Hey, boy!` someone shouted. I turned away to see who was there: a very old man was waving with his hand and calling me to come a little bit closer. I didn`t mind. While walking towards him, I looked everywhere around.

This place was new to me. I was surrounded by deep-purple mountains with their snow-white tops, some cerulean and light-pink wavy clouds above my head, little wood-made homes and small fire-colored window lights on the horizon. Seemed like not me, but my mind always went in the direction of landscapes from innocent children`s fairy tales. I was amazed by the beauty of the view and, actually don`t want to admit it, I gazed at this panorama for some time. Until I bumped into the old man.

`I`m sorry, sir.` I could hardly speak, now staying in front of the old man and feeling his eyes on myself. Man smiled in a friendly way, but I still felt how narrowly he was staring at me. I thought: `Please, do not say that you already know something about me…`

`Where are you going, my young friend?` his calm tone of voice made me also feel a little bit relaxed. But I stayed on the look-out. The last thing in the world the old man really needed to know was about my bag I carried all through this violet desert. He mustn`t keep up with my knowledge about what my bag contains. I had no idea of how to answer his question, but I tried to find some right words.

Then, seeing me kept silent, he continued talking to me. And of course, he already knew everything about me and my aims... and my bag! I felt terrible and frightened, even petrified thinking about my bag, because there were…

`You are 50m away from the barrier which separates two parts of this mysterious place. Until you cross the border, you are save enough…` the old man pointed at the bloody red line went straight ahead on the mauve and iris-colored sand. Seemed like he wanted to get me round not to come across that barrier. But his words were useless for me. Anyway, I must overstep this bound whatever it takes.

`I don`t feel safe here,` I stamped my foot and purple sand grains scattered under it. I sighed. My long breathing out made the old man also feel sad. His smile showed sadness accurately, but neither did his eyes. Deep black lake without any bottom – this is how I can describe his eyes. What`s more, he even could smile with them! Yes, he was smiling so cruelly towards me only using his gloomy glance.

`What have you done to feel that dirty way, my son? Why don`t you want staying here and not crossing that line?` he asked me, and again I couldn`t find the answer. And, suddenly moved by desire, I resented:

`Why don`t you let me do whatever I want? Just one cross through the line and everybody will be satisfied!`

I was shaking with anger. Staying in place, I was wasting my precious time. I must cross the line and reach another territory. I must reach Colorado.

`Oh, boy, you are such a charmer!` the old man laughed at me. `Watch out – bugs and their larva are following you! They smell something delicious, don`t they?`

The old man was right. Insects were crawling along the trail towards me. I knew the reason. Now, I should tell you everything.

First of all, I would like to tell you about my childhood. I was born on the planet Earth, in England. But right now I`m in the middle of nowhere wasting my time. My family was not poor, therefore I could afford everything without thinking of its price.

I also thought that could make other people obey me by controlling their behavior and feelings. I fancied myself a god. This attitude to people should have made me fell scared just at the beginning, I should have really worked on it. But I didn`t. I remember me as a small boy, full of anger at all the naughty friends. I should not call them friends after all I`ve done. I have got no one by my side, because I have killed every friend I once had. Yes, my hands were stained with blood regularly.

I have been collecting every heart for many years, because I found only this part of any dead body beautiful. Can you imagine a warm heart, still alive after sudden body`s death? I could watch the heartbeat in my palm forever. Now I have this: an impressive and heavy bag of hearts on my shoulders.

And what I am doing with it? Well, if I cross the red line with the bag, I`ll be saved from karma. Because there, on the other side, nothing could kill me. Do you remember me telling you about one very annoying thing in the beginning of the story? That was about karma. Karma will chase me for my lies. And I know I cannot hide from it until I cross the barrier, where karma does not exist. But with every minute I haven`t crossed the line, it gets much more dangerous for me.

Do you understand me now? I can`t hide from my destiny anymore. I must cross the border or I must die.

`You are never going to make it,` the old man said quietly, looking straight in my eyes, `it`s just a game of waiting. There is really no escape until you die. La-la…`

`I`ll brace for battle and fight because I know I cannot hide!` I shouted at the old man irritable. He glanced at my bag once more and turned away.

And in this elusive second I made my last mistake. Being too impatient, I foolishly stepped towards a red line. At the same time the ground started to shake with unimaginable strength. I shuddered and screamed out in inhuman fright. The ground divided into two parts with a terrible noise. I closed my ears and fell off my feet, unable to stand the ground shaking because of a sudden earthquake.

I hardly opened one eyes. I wish I hadn`t opened even one of them.

There was a white enormous-sized dragon quickly crawling out of the ground with terrible sounds. It was nearly 1 kilometer high and only god knew what was its length. Giant monster had long flexible body, two hind legs, two both beautiful and scaring wings where front legs should be, heavy head with elongated muzzle and countless sharp teeth inside it. The color of its scaly skin seemed to be pearl, snow, frost and porcelain. All these shades mixed up and created one white color shinning under the sun. Dragon was gazing at me with its deep ice-colored eyes. I felt that this monster had intellect. It growled and exhaled fire from its nostrils. I realized the dragon could no longer wait not to devour me in next split second.

I was just lying on the ground between stones and feeling hot dragon`s breath on my skin. Monster`s body made some strong wavy moves with it`s muscle, which caused groundshaking again.

`Meet Karma,` introduced the old man to pale me, `my faithful girl.`

I was too petrified to say something. I saw wild hunger in Karma`s deep blue eyes.

`You see, Karma has chased you. And now my scale-skinned and long-tailed friend is going to show you your place. At last, my dear boy.`

One instant and the dragon pounced on me with pleasure. Karma`s long sharp teeth cut my weak body through. I was bleeding out. Karma won, I paid for all my sins. Death of a «hero» has happened.

When dragon attacked the boy, his bag with hearts flew to the old man`s side. He bent over and took one beating heart out.

`Karma will always chase you, even if it seems too real to be true. La-la…`

He put the heart back in its place, commanded the dragon to disappear and watched as another silhouette with a bag came closer and closer.
