Chapter 5: An old friend part 1

It was just like any other day

Nurse Nightbell was doing her normal check up on the patients on floor 4 which was solely meant for patients who have fallen into a coma.

The life preserver machine along with the healing runes inscribed on the walls do a good job at keeping the patients alive so she only has to check up on them once a day, to know everything was working perfectly.

She checked every room on the south side of the 4th floor so now she was going to check the patients on the west side. She stopped in front of the door labeled '0243' which was the first door she encountered on the west side.

The patient inside that room was very important and it was the only room she had to check multiple times daily.

She never got to learn who was behind that door, the only thing she knew about him was that he was from earth. She immediately frowned as she recalled that information.

"Useless scums" she muttered.

Few years ago, an unforeseen disaster stroke the entirety of Gaia. Giant obsidian obelisks appeared all over the world. These obelisks were silent and deadly. You could never predict when or where one would appear and they had the ability to suck all of your essences if you come in with the slightest contact of one of them.

Thousands died before this nature of theirs were discovered. No one knew why they appeared and the military along with the royal family stayed silent.

It would have been manageable if it were only the obelisks but the spawn rate of monsters sky rocketed, the creations of sub-spaces increased drastically, natural events such as earthquakes became more and more common, normal household pets and magic beasts mutated but the most terrifying of them all was the appearances of Titans, disaster ranked supernatural entities.

Those beings defied common sense. Their attacks ignored defense, they proved to have uncanny ability to adapt and they absorbed the stats and the powers of the things they kill. And the worst of all, it was unknown how many of them exists.

In short, it was a catastrophe.

In response to this threat, the military announced that they would summon people from another world that they have discovered to help. The public felt a hint of solace at this announcement.

Certainly, numbers don't mean shit against Titans but they felt a bit relieved. Safety in numbers after all and humans were weak compared to other races and this was how they survived most of the time.

However, this solace did not last long. Everybody realized something was wrong when the first batch arrived. They were... pathetically weak. Almost everyone did not possess even a hint of any affinity towards anything and their growth rate was pitiable.

But they just chalked it up to the unlikely chance of everyone from the first batch being losers and kept summoning more and more until everyone on Earth was transported to Gaia. They had to accept the fact that there was no reinforcements.

So for five whole months, everyone was depressed. The original humans were disappointed and angry that everyone was doomed to die that they took their anger on the Earthlings. They built massive camping areas all around major cities and used them as bait to lure hordes of monsters away from themselves and in case of a Titan stumbling on one of the camps, they had planted bombs so the Titan wouldn't have a feast.

The earthlings were not given time to adjust to this new environment, this new world and their new situation.

However, a ray of hope appeared two months ago when the first Titan was slain. And it was done by only two people. 'The Solar lord' Blake Emberson and the 'Hellstorm' Noelle Alabaster. Two Earthlings slew a Titan and the public started to see Earthlings in a more positive light.

They deemed that their current living conditions was too cruel so they called them back to the city and offered them the opportunity to live like a normal Gaia inhabitants. Some resilient ones managed to work their way up and started to pursue their dreams in this fantasy world while some accepted it as karma for destroying their own planet and accepted their fate and lived like slaves. But the anger towards the earthlings never disappeared, it only dimmed a little.

Nurse Nightbell always stopped before this door to get her emotions in check otherwise she might do something. If the patient inside wasn't backed up by a higher up that was paying the fees, she would have unplugged his life support ages ago. Why wouldn't she? The fee for taking care of a comatose person per month in this day and age was a lot and it could be used to feed a family of four for half a year but it was being spent on a useless trash.

After a few deep breaths, she finally entered the room and what she saw made her freeze in shock.

Everything was mostly the same. The patient was still laying on his bed looking like skin and bones. His skin was as white as his bedsheet which signaled that he did not see the sun for a long time. His overgrown hair and sunken cheeks were all the same except that his eyes were open.

Nightbell has never seen his eyes before. They were icy blue which was her favorite color. She thought it was kind of beautiful.

Then, right before her eyes, his irises changed color. Suddenly going from his icy blue to yellow then bright pink before finally settling on a deeper shade of blue.

He opened his mouth while grimacing if it was painful, which probably was, and said in a raspy, hoarse voice.

"Can... I... get a... cup... of water?"

She immediately slammed the door and ran back to inform the manager.

"A comatose patient... is awake" she yelled.

"Whoa, whoa chill out lady, deep breaths, deep breaths ok? No-"

"The patient from 0243 is awake!" She said while panting.

The manager's face immediately changed from surprise to happiness and then became serious and left before she could ask for his number

He went to his office, slammed it shut and went to his desk. He pulled out a phone from one of the drawers and called a number.

"Hey Blake! It's me Alex and... he's awake"
