Chapter 23: Weapons

"Do you know how to use a sword?" Aldrich asked as he tossed Levi a training sword to Levi.

Levi caught it, a little shakily, then weighed it in his hands. He had actually never held one before, it was heavier than he had expected.

"No, not really." He admitted sheepishly.

[While I am present, there is no greater protection. Abaddon declared haughtily. These knights and their puny swords and armor. All melted away within seconds of facing my flames.]

"You know, you're awfully condescending to knights for someone who lost to one all those centuries ago." Levi cracked.

Abaddon was silent for a little after that, shocked by the sheer indignation.

[I admit I was caught off guard by that person they now call a king, he seethed. But I understand his abilities now, it will not happen a second time.]

Levi gripped the base of the sword with both his hands and held it in front of him. He may not have used one before but he had watched others fight. How hard could it be.

Meanwhile a few meters away, on the other side of the open field, Aldrich gripped his relic in his hand. With a thought it turned into a sword of his own.

"Okay, so I want you to try your best to block my attacks as best as you can." Aldrich yelled to Levi. Levi nodded in response. With Sir Andrius away again on a mission and his father being against his decisions as usual, Aldrich found himself having only Levi to ask to train with him.

Well, he could ask Psyche, he considered. But that guy would almost definitely try to turn it into some kind of deathmatch. So Levi would have to do for now.

Aldrich took a deep breath and readied himself. Then he rushed forward as fast as he could. Levi jumped a little at the sudden start, he raised his sword just in time to block Aldrich's swing.

The sound of the metal blades grinding against each other rang loudly in his ears. He pushed Aldrich back before skipping back a few steps.

He hadn't realized how loud it would be up close. He shook his head and then focused on Aldrich again who was already rushing in for another strike.

Veliona sighed, bored out of her mind. How was it that there was not a single interesting thing to do in this enormous castle. She found herself reminiscing about when she had been kidnapped. That was exciting at least.

She shot up in her seat suddenly. Speaking being kidnapped, she wondered what those two were up to right now. She jumped up and headed over to her bedside drawer, where she kept her dagger hidden under some random things.

With a quick movement she cut through the air and then peaked in through the rift. It opened up into what she assumed was Aldrich's room. She had never been to the de la Rossa estate herself but she was quite certain she had gotten the location right. She took one more look before closing the rift. Apart from the bed being unmade the room was surprisingly tidy, she had not expected that from Aldrich.

She opened a new one, this one looked to be a courtyard in the house. No one in there either. She saw a little girl in the next, playing by herself in a corner of the estate. That must be his little sister, she thought. She's so cute.

One more try led her into another room. A pair of legs walked past, followed by the sound of a voice. Sir Alastair's voice. She moved to seal this one as well when something Alastair said caught her attention.

"He just will not quit. No matter what I say." Alastair said to someone Veliona could not see.

The unknown person chuckled. "Well then he's just like you were all those years go."

Alastair sighed. "More like how she was. I've tried my hardest to keep him away from the life of a knight... to keep us out of the light, but it just doesn't work. And now a dragon shows up right at our doorstep. That one cannot be far behind, especially now with this tourney coming up all the attention will be on Yves."

Veliona could only make out bits of their conversation from where the rift was positioned. But so far from what she understood they were discussing Aldrich.

"Wait," the unknown voice said all of a sudden. "Can you feel that? Some kind of... presence."

A small shiver ran down Veliona's spine. She quickly sealed the rift, before she was discovered. She let out a small breath of relief after.

So Aldrich was not at home. Which would make finding him a bit more annoying. She had a contingency for moments like this though. She got up and walked over to her closet, rummaging in it for... the leather pant she had been wearing during their trip. She checked in the pockets and came up with two strands of hair, one red and the other brown. Aldrich's and Levi's.

She had taken them from them just in case she ever needed to locate them fast. Having something personal would make tracking their locations way more precise. She gripped both hairs in her fist and shut her eyes before cutting one last rift.

The space opened up to a field outside the city. Judging from the surroundings, a few hundred meters from the de la Rossa estate she guessed. She opened it just in time to see Aldrich and Levi crossing blades. Aldrich focused and determined, Levi unsure but trying his best.

"What's this," She called out loudly. "You boys having all the fun without me?"

She laughed as Aldrich almost jumped out of his skin and Levi dropped his sword. Veliona cut the rift even wider, and then stepped through it onto the grass.

"V-Veliona. How long have you been watching... and how did you find us." Aldrich asked, regaining his posture.

"I have my ways." She replied with a sly grin.

"It's so cool that you can just pop in whenever you want." Levi commented as she closed the rift behind her. She had like, half an hour before Arissa noticed her room was awfully quiet.

"Yeah..." Aldrich agreed halfheartedly. "Just hopefully not when I'm bathing or anything like that."

Veliona laughed. "Don't worry, I won't be making that mistake again."

"Wait, 'again'? Did you just say again."

Veliona walked past him, swiftly changing the subject. "So, I assume the training is for the tourney in a few weeks."

"How did you know?" Aldrich asked.

"Because... I am the crown princess after all. It is part of my duty to know about these things." She replied. She had decided to keep what she had heard to herself. Aldrich probably already knew how much his father didn't want him to compete. "I am here, because I can help you train."

Aldrich raised an eyebrow. "You can. Really?"

"Yes, really." Veliona rolled her eyes. She gestured for Levi to hand her his sword. Once it was in her hands she tested its edge carefully, before spinning it skillfully and pointing it at Aldrich.

Clearly she was a lot more skilled with a sword than Levi was, Aldrich had to admit. And they were quite a way away from anyone else. Aldrich readied himself as Levi took a back seat to watch instead.

Veliona wiggled a finger at him before holding out her hand.

Aldrich was confused. "You want... my weapon."

She walked up to him and took the relic from his hand before handing him her sword. She waved it at him as she backed up again.

"You barely use this thing to its full potential." She stated. "This relic is far too powerful to just being designated to be your slightly more portable longsword."

Aldrich had mostly used it as a standard knight longsword, it was a force of habit. "It's not my fault."

Veliona scoffed. She looked down at the relic in her hand. A split second later it had turned into a dagger, around the same size as her own. She flipped it into the air and as it spun turned it into a halberd before grabbing its horizontal shaft. She spun the halberd skillfully around herself and then brought it to rest at her side as a katana.

Levi and Aldrich watched in silenced awe. "Where did you learn to use weapons anyway?"

"Studied under a multiple weapons master while I was in Yumekawa." She replied nonchalantly.

"What?" She asked, noticing their dumbfounded stares. "A princess can't have hobbies?"

She brought her katana up. "Now come on. Your imperial highness is going to teach you a few tricks because she's feeling charitable today."
