Imani furrowed her brows at him as he clutched the book and moved it out of her view before giving him a look that said 'why?'.

"Where did you get this?" he asked in a low voice as he leaned closer to Imani, dropping the pocket watch on the table, and Lucas gritted his teeth, more than ready to fight him if he was scaring Imani again. Why the hell does he need to lean so close to her to ask a question?

"I found it –" she stopped talking when Lucas suddenly jerked her chair closer to his, the sound of wood dragging across the vinyl tile echoing through the dining room, and she swivelled her head to look at him. Lucas was still staring straight ahead, like he didn't do anything, and his knuckles were white from gripping the arm of her chair too hard while his jaw was tightened.
