Mill's party all went to grab materials from various shops and from the school's resources that were available to students. After a few hours they met up once again at the front of the entrance of the school and set out on foot. "Why didn't any of you get some sort of transportation like a car, a van, even something old fashioned like a horse-drawn wagon?" Lua was slightly annoyed with her comrades due to them having managed to forget the most important part of the whole questing journey. The form of transportation.
"Why are you so upset? You didn't think of getting it either." Darren accused which sparked a quick reaction out of Lua. "Oh, you're so right Darren. I shouldn't have forgotten that I have a pair of idiots in my party that thought that it would be smart to blow their money on random gadgets that we don't fucking need!" Lua glared at Karl and Darren as she raised her voice. "I didn't get transportation because I thought that someone else would be smart enough to get one, so I bought potions and antidotes for multiple occasions. Mill got preserved food and water for the trip, so I knew he probably didn't get it, but the fact that both of you got a bunch of useless items from the same place goes to show how little you understand about what it is that we're about to do!"
Darren and Karl looked at each other and saw that they each were carry bags full of item and gadgets. They had so many that they honestly didn't even know what all of them did, but they weren't gonna back down now. Or at least they weren't when suddenly "HOONNNNKKKKK!" a loud car horn blew from ahead. The group moved to the sound and saw Myst sitting in the driver's seat of a large truck. "Hurry newbies, even by car Severton's at least 2 days away." The group stood in slightly shocked before rushing over to the truck and beginning to climb in. "Hey, Mill. Hop on in the passenger's seat. The leader should be in the front." Mill watched his friends jump into the back of the truck, shrugged and hopped into the passenger's seat. After everyone got in the truck Myst pushed on the ignition and drove in the direction of Severton.
...
Mill slowly opened his eyes. He had fallen asleep due to the long journey and the lack of activeness made gave him really one choice. He looked outside and noticed that the truck had stopped, and the twin moons sat high in the sky. "Hey Myst why did we..." Mill turned but Myst was no longer in the driver's seat. 'He must have left gotten out to make camp. Mill opened the got out of the car and went to see if the others were in the back, which they weren't. 'Well, that's just messed up. They stopped to make camp and didn't even wake me?' Mill sighed and started to look around to see if he could find smoke or see some light in the distance, anything that would indicate where his friends went. But there was nothing.
No smoke, no campfire light, and there wasn't even any noise of the nighttime creatures. It was just...silent and dark. "H-hey guys! This isn't funny!" Mill looked around vigorously for a bit longer when he finally saw some smoke emitting in the distance. "There you are!" Mill excitedly took off in the direction of the smoke through various trees, vines, and rocks cutting up his clothes as he ran further towards his friends. As he got closer, he could finally hear something. It sounded familiar, like music but it was just voices. Mill was confused but didn't stop moving toward the sound excitedly. "Finally! You know you guys really put me through the ringer leaving me alone..like...that."
Mill froze. He had exited the forest but the site before wasn't at all what he was expecting. It wasn't a small campfire with his friends sitting around laughing and smiling. Mill was greeted instead by a sight that he knew well. A village on fire with many buildings that had been reduced to rubble. There was blood on the ground and the sounds of screams and desperate cries for help that was abruptly cut off as someone's life was ended. This was an attack, no, a massacre. It was an unprompted massacre that left no person living. Mill's breathing quickened and he didn't know what to do when he heard it.
"MILL, HELP US!" Mill heard the cry of his friends and dashed into the town to find them. He didn't want them to suffer the same fate as the rest of the village. Mill ran as fast as he could but for some reason, he couldn't activate his ability to go faster but that didn't matter so he just ran as hard as he could without it when he finally came upon the sight of his friends. Mill was breathing hard, but he could see that his friends were alive they were injured but they were alive. Lua was sitting up on her knees with a holding her arm and staring into the distance at an unconscious Darren and severely injured Karl. He ran up to Lua who seemed to be the least injured out of the group.
"Lua! What happened? Why is everyone like this? Why is this place in flames what happened?" Lua slowly looked over to Mill with tears running down her face and she began to mumble something. "...late," but Mill couldn't hear it because he swore that he could hear music building up in the background, so he leaned in closer. "What did you say?"
"I said, you're too late, Mill." The music got louder, eerie and suspenseful. Mill was confused when he watched a hand penetrate Lua's stomach and lift her into the air not even giving her a chance to scream in pain. "LUA!!" Mill couldn't do anything as a person with dark cloak and a hood on that covered their face stood over him with Lua hanging from their arm. "You son of a bi-!" Mill tried to grab that person, but they were too quick. In just the blink of an eye the person had made it to Darren and lifted their foot over his head. "No don't!" Before Mill could stop him the person's foot crushed Darren's skull, completely obliterating it. Mill didn't waste any time worrying about that as he dashed for Karl with his hand outstretched.
"Karl take my hand, quick!" Karl looked up at Mill and reached out his hand which Mill managed to grab; however, Karl was no longer attached to the arm that held that hand. He was now being held by the throat in the firm grasp of the person that had just killed the rest of Mill's friends. "No! Please don't do it! Stop it!" The hooded figure looked towards Mill, and he saw them. The eyes. The eyes of the one that murdered his family, the eyes of the group that destroyed his village, and the eyes of the one that was slaughtering all of Mill's friends in front of him.
These were the eyes of Mill's nightmares. And as he looked into those eyes, he heard a visceral crack as the person's hand crushed Karl's neck. Mill had no words. All he could do was wait. All of his friends were dead, and he was the only one left standing so he could only wait for this demon to end his life. So, he waited and waited but his death never came instead he heard a deep, gravelly voice speak to him in a taunting tone.
"You're all alone now, boy." With that the figure began to walk away. Mill felt his heart jump out of his chest. "Alone? You mean I'm the only one alive? It happened again. No. NO!" Mill tried to chase the person, but something grabbed his legs causing him to stop. He looked down and saw Lua, Darren, and Karl holding him down. "Why do you get to live?" He heard Karl's voice cry out.
"Yeah, you failed to save us so why do you get to stay alive!" This time it was Darren's voice that Mill heard. "You're a weak coward. If you get to live then avenge us! AVENGE ALL OF US!!" As Lua screamed more corpses began to grab onto Mill and started to chant, "Avenge us." over and over again.
"I-I can't. Please let me go. I can't avenge you all. I can't beat them! I need help." Mill started to get pulled into the ground by the voice he tried to struggle his way out but couldn't feel any strength in his body. Corpses began to stack on top of him and screamed for him to avenge them, to save them, but Mill couldn't do anything the corpses seemed to have cut off Mill's air. He felt closed in, locked up and he couldn't breathe. No matter how hard he tried he just couldn't breathe.
'No, no please. I don't want to go back. Don't put me back in there. I hate that place!' Mill tried to scream his thoughts, but no sound came out and as he came ever closer to his greatest fear...
"NO!" He bolted up from his seat in the truck and startled Myst who was still driving. "What in the hell! Why in Blaze's name did you just scream!" Mill ignored Myst and started to scan his surroundings. He looked out of the trucks window and saw that they were currently driving across a wide open plain, likely being the Plains of Great Rest just northeast of the city. Mill looked in the back of the truck and saw his three friends asleep but definitely alive.
Mill let out a big breath of relief. "It was just a nightmare." He heard a chuckle from Myst. "And what are you laughing at?" An annoyed Mill questioned his chaperone.
Myst glanced over at Mill then back to the road. "Just that the brave and fearless MVP Mill Kabrok got so shaken up by a nightmare." Myst smirked at Mill, but Mill was not smiling. Mill decided to ignore his chaperone completely and rested back in his seat with no intention of falling asleep again.
"What a fun road trip."
