Chapter 3: The three sisters

Onicent, Dauntice and Maiguh started out working as a team. There was yet to be monsters or animals, only rolling hills and endless forests, there was hardly any flowers either. The only breaks from the forest were the small ponds and rivers. Dauntice enjoyed dangling his feet in them when the afternoon sun heated their backs. Maiguh on the other hand stuck to the shade. Both Onicent and Dauntice found this amusing and enjoyed pushing him out into the sun only to see him retreat.

"What's wrong little brother?" Onicent enquired after they pushed him out for the second time.

"It's so bright!" Maiguh shuddered, "I don't know how you two stand it."

"Maybe you just need more exposure," Dauntice suggested, he had his whole legs in the river.

"We can help with that," Onicent grinned.

"No- no t-t thank you!" Maiguh raised his hands. "I think I'll go s- see mother."

Both Onicent and Dauntice sighed, "weren't you in the void last week?"

"Yeah," Maiguh said quietly, "she misses us!"

Both brothers snickered. But Maiguh ignored them and teleported into the void.

"Maiguh!" His mother cried, she was stronger then the last time he'd been here. He could see her body in the faint light, her skin was pale purple, and her hair was darker and glittery like stars.

"Your stronger mother," Maiguh said, he gave her a hug.

"Have your brothers been taking care of you?" She asked lightly, but he heard her concern.

"Yes, of course they have, don't worry about me." Maiguh lied through his teeth.

"That's good," the old goddess pulled back. "I have a message for you Maiguh."

"Okay," Maiguh said.

"The world is growing and changing, soon you will be joined by others," she said.

"Others? You mean other people like my brothers?"

"Yes and others like me, they will need leaders. When you return to the surface world, take your brothers into the deepest cave, then plant three blocks of dirt, the first to grow should lead the brothers, the second to grow and third will assist the first."

"Why can't you just tell us who should be the leader of the three of us," Maiguh asked, after all the answer was obvious.

But his mother shook her head, "tell them now Maiguh."

Maiguh left the void and returned to the surface world to find his two brothers. They were not pleased to see him back so soon until they heard his message. Secretly both brothers suspected that they were the chosen leader, they acted arrogantly now. Together the three sought out the fated cave and when they found its deepest pit near bubbling lava they planted the three blocks down. Dauntice was so focused on his block when he heard the first pop of grass growing in he didn't register, his grew in second. His feeling of annoyance was brief but deep set, he'd never forgive the winner completely. He turned expecting to see Onicent with a look of triumph but instead he had a look of bitter hate, for the first block to grow in had been Maiguh's. Maiguh had a look of happiness on his face, until he saw his two brothers. Onicent drew a blade on him.

"Mother said to honor the results," Maiguh said in a strained voice.

"Clearly there's been a mistake then," Onicent said.

"No, there has not, mother intended me to lead."

Onicent lashed out and slashed his brother with his blade, the wound was small, for Maiguhs bedrock core protected his body, but still drops of blood spilled over in the lava. Onicent was prepared to make another blow but stopped when Dauntice cried out. For the lava was hissing and bubbling now, from the depths three girls rose. They had glowing orange eyes, and each ones hair was full of embers. Onicent and Dauntice jumped back, but Maiguh stayed where he was. They regarded him first then moved on to Onicent.

"We curse you Onicent for spilling blood," the first said.

"Your brother the rightful leader shall brand you," said the second.

"Beware," they chorused.

Onicent took in these words of warning, then watched as the girls shed their lava and became more like them. Neither of his brothers had seemed to hear them, but one thing was for sure, Maiguh had to go before he could harm Onicent.
