There was only pain. Every inch of my body ached with a soreness that went bone-deep, and the fever made it seem like I was being burned alive. My muscles screamed with every breath I took, and the relentless heat was unbearable.

I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt this miserable. It was like my body was at war with itself, and I was just a helpless spectator caught in the crossfire.

Somewhere in the haze of pain, I felt something cool touch my forehead—a wet towel, damp and soothing against the inferno inside me. It was a small relief, but I clung to it, desperate for anything to take the edge off.

My eyelids were so heavy, it felt like lifting them would take all the strength I had left, but I needed to see who was there, who was offering me this bit of mercy.
