Little girls when asked what they wish to be when they grow up, many answer differently. But one consistent wish each and every one of them have, is their wish to be a princess. For the little girls of Azalia, the capital city of Rovsta, the idea never seemed too far away. All one had to do was pretend the large and towering limestone castle in the city center was theirs to own and live in.
But no little girl would ever feel complete or as lucky as Lia. Who didn't need to pretend to be a princess living in that limestone castle. She already was. As the first born daughter of King Grant, and Queen Vivian, she was set to inherit the throne from the moment she was born. The love her parents gave her was just as great as the expectations that were weighed upon her.
She was never afraid. She was always told she would be great, she would be powerful, she would always be their daughter. Until, the day of The Awakened.
The day of The Awakened, was a world wide event that took place once every year. It was the best and most anticipated day to summon a creature from the Eternal Realm. A realm where monsters and creatures of great power once existed. And in a world where beast, man, and incredibly powerful and deadly creatures roamed, a summons was the best means to fight them.
A balance the world created between those who walked on its earth. Mana and magic was only a fantasy performed in the closest way possible. Through summoning.
The day of The Awakened was a day where children of the ages eighteen and below would discover if they were a summoner or not. How? A rune circle would appear on their bodies, signifying their connection to the Eternal Realm.
The best time to summon a creature would be on this day, as the fresher the rune circle was, the quicker and more familiar your summons would be with you, and the more time you would have to train and control.
Of course there were times when the summons would not appear for various reasons. The summons being uninterested, the summoner not being strong enough, or the right criteria being met to summon them. However, none could deny that The day of The Awakened was the most anticipated day of the year, world wide. The significance of its importance for politics, power, and prestige nobility were also taken into account.
It was a day where Lia, under the stern and anticipated eyes of her parents, stood on one of their private summoning podiums, expecting to be met with a powerful summons. Perhaps the expectations of her parents at the young age of five were too stressful, or far too young for the start of a rune circle as many experts advised, but Lia's rune circle did not appear that day.
The parents were not upset, nor were they distressed. After all, only a handful of people around the world called forth their own summons at such a young age. They had expectations, but they still loved her, even for something she couldn't control.
But that love soon grew thin as Lia's tenth birthday passed, and no rune circle. Then her fifteenth, then her seventeenth, and soon, Lia was eighteen. By now, her siblings - her younger brother by one year and sister by three - had already found their rune circles.
Rall, her brother, had called forth an A class, heavy defensive Sword Master, from the Warrior class. A class known for being the class home to some of the most powerful summons imaginable. While her sister, Clara, called forth a B class Regeneration type from the Healer class.
Rall had called his summons at the age of six, one year after Lia's failure. Clara, at eight, three years after Lia's failure.
They were seen as geniuses among their generation and time, while Lia, was only seen as a disappointment. Her mother would constantly brush her hair, and baby her even when she had grown into a young woman. Her father was stern with others, but always soft around her. Rall and Clara always looked up to Lia, never sitting still unless they saw Lia's calm behavior. They all once loved her. Once.
Over the years of her siblings shower of praise caused them to look at their sister with embarrassment and disappointment. Lia was first born, set on inheriting the kingdom, yet she couldn't even call forth a summons. How could she be their sister?
For their family, who was known for establishing this kingdom at the start of the world with one of the most powerful summons in history, the great dragon Kalcora, the Dragon of Hellish Flames, having a child of their family, the first in history, fail to call forth a creature was seen as taboo.
Thoughts of whether Lia was the legitimate child of his majesty caused a rumor to spread fast and quick. And as soon as it reached the ears of her majesty the queen, she just as quickly shut herself off from Lia, and gave up being her mother.
Her father shared a similar view, changing his crowned successor to her younger - more powerful - brother, who relished the idea of becoming king. He and his sister Clara, soon followed their parents' example, shutting Lia out from their social and private lives.
Soon, Lia found herself alone, cast out from her family for her failures. She didn't care about the throne, nor about the way people of the kingdom looked at her. All she cared about was her family. Seeing them shut her out and lose all sense of love for her, she was broken.
The people mocked her, her family called her useless, and worse, attempts on her life had already begun. Supremacists who saw their country as the strongest among all in Melcor, saw her as a rat that would destroy their royal bloodline. Assassin after assassin made attempts on her life, via poison, bombs, or even daggers to the throat. If not for her uncle, the grand duke of Westburrow, she would have long since died.
Her family made no moves to protect her. In their eyes, if she was unable to summon a warrior or creature to fight by her side, she was destined to die like so many others who had been unable to.
It took months, and eventually years, but finally Lia began to lose her faith in her family. She accepted she was alone in this world, and could care less for what this world had in store for her. If she was destined to die, then she would look death in the eyes and hold her stare until he took her hand. If she was destined to be alone, then she would become a master of solitude. She was ready.
But…she wasn't ready for this.
