Chapter 2: Meeting Theo
Helena left the room holding Theo's hand. For the first time in a very long time Theo left the treasure room. They walked hand in hand until she saw her father and the Grandmaster waiting. Theo instinctively let go of Helena's hand and ran behind her back. He gripped the corner of her pink ruffled shirt while he hid behind her, every so often peeking around her.
The Grandmaster looked at her wrist. "Is that the item you chose?" Helena felt Theo flinch behind her. "Yep! isn't it pretty cute?" Helena realized neither of them were looking at Theo and only at her wrist.
"Well shall we continue the tour of the tower?" Helena's eyes grew wide "I get a full tour too? Dad too?" The Grandmaster chuckled at her surprise
"But of course, you do, that's the privilege of the gift you got." Helena met her dad's eyes and they both smiled and had the time of their lives on this 2 hour tour.
After the tour ended Helena asked to go to the tree where her mother was put to rest. Once they arrived Helena sat with her father under the wisteria wrapped oak tree. They talked about the tour and laughed with one another.
Theo stood quietly to the side trying not to make a sound while they talked so merrily. Helena noticed that Theo was looking a little uncomfortable. She asked her father "hey dad... can you see Theo?" Theo was still hiding behind Helena "Theo? who is that?" Helena pushes Theo in front of him and explains what happened in the treasure room.
"I'm sorry I can't see him " Helena shook her head and looked at Theo "It's okay.. Theo this is my dad. His name is Lennon. He will be your dad too! Since we will be together from now on. Dad this little guy is Theo" She motions how tall this boy is by showing where the top of his head is "It's nice to meet you Theo. I can't see you but Helena has a different magic than I do. Maybe that's why. I hope we can get along well regardless"
Lennon smiled at the empty air " Would you like to join us today and travel around? I have a big day planned for Helena's birthday" Theo's eyes grew big and agreed wholeheartedly "he's excited. I am too
I wasn't aware you had a whole day planned"
Lennon ruffled Helena's hair. "Of course I do, It's an important birthday for you. Your mom always said 20 was an important birthday. But let's go and have a fun filled day we will never forget. You too Theo" Lennon said softly
The trio had a day full of wonder and amazement. Lennon had this planned all year long. He took them to the crystal caverns where they spotted speckled crystal rabbits that only show up there.
They went to Blue fire mountain next where the flames of rebirth burn year round. Farmers come here just to get this flame to revitalize their land. They saw Rainbow rain valley, The underwater town of Guin, even the light Forrest on the Floating island of Lazoli. Everything was unforgettable and amazing.
As the sun started to lower towards the skyline
Lennon brought them to a hill in a very normal looking place compared to everywhere they had been today.
But it had a different kind of beauty. "What is this place dad?"
Lennon lingered for a moment, "Helena... I need to have a serious talk with you. Its something that I've been putting off for a long time..." Helena could see tears forming in her dad's eyes. She quickly became worried about his health. But like always he cut her off before she could ask him a question he couldn't answer "I'm fine, but there is something I have needed to tell you since a long time ago. I just couldn't bare to do it until now." Helena saw just how much discomfort he was in. She reached out her hand and held his hand firmly , quietly waiting for him to say what was bothering him.
Lennon took a deep breath "Helena.. today is the last day we will ever see one another. You will have to survive on your own...no with Theo with you "
Helena mind was a mess, failing to comprehend what her dad was telling her. "what? I don't.. why.. dad?"
Lennon pulled his daughter into his arms one last time. "I never told you about who you were, and I regret it a little bit now. Our last moments will just be confusion and pain for you. But try to listen to me."
"Your mother wasn't born in this world...and neither were you. You came here just after you were born.
There was so much danger there...When we came here we decided to live here forever. Your mother kept your body in check with her magic.. She knew how to simulate her world for you here. But after she passed so suddenly, there has been nobody to maintain it. It has been growing weaker this whole time. It's at the breaking point..." Lennon was so choked up but he still continued on
You are getting to the age where your body will go through the change your mother talked to me about...we don't know how long your body will survive here after this birthday. If at all. I need to send you back.." Lennon was crying softly while hugging his daughter. His hands shaking while patting Helena's back to calm her.
Helena's mind was whirling in circles. She was so confused "Then come with me... We can go together right? I don't care where we are." Helena was fighting back tears. Her voice was cracking and Lennon noticed and hugged her tighter.
He took another deep breath "My baby.. I can't go with you, just as this world is poison to you, yours is poison to me. You got your looks from me.. but you got your mother's constitution. Your mother's magic.
I said I will always be with you no matter what, but I can't go with you... I'm sorry. "
After what seemed like an eternity of silence Lennon pulled his daughter out of his embrace. He handed her his storage bag that he never let her touch. "This is yours now. It has everything from your room in it. I can finally let you see my magic " Lennon wipes his tears and chuckled softly. "This magic is what let me meet your mother. But it never regenerates and grows smaller every time I use it. I have one more use left."
Lennon smiled fondly
"I crossed worlds and met your mother. We fell in love an then I crossed worlds with both of you to protect you. I can only travel once more, alone. I've been saving it for this day. Hold Theo close to yourself Helena. Maybe because he's in the bracelet it won't take more energy." Lennon looked at the hill they were on. "This is where we landed when we traveled from there. I promised your mom I'd send you back from here should anything ever happen to her..."
"Dad I don't want to go. I don't need your storage pouch... I won't be picky.. I will work harder..."
Tears were falling down Helena's face, begging not to get sent away. "Helena! I love you more than anything.
More than magic. I'm willing to send you there to know that you will live. Please don't make me watch you die. Think of this as your biggest adventure yet.
I'm proud of who you grew up to be.. your mom would be too. " Lennon looked at the sun about to disappear
"Helena, it's time. Please ..."
Helena ran back and hugged Lennon with all her might. "Okay.. I'll go. But I'll be back for you. Even if only to visit. I will find a way I promise. I love you the most ... more than magic..."
Lennon smiled at his daughter and used his magic.
Helena who was standing on the hill felt a huge wind swirl around her body. Soon a warm light surrounded her. She clutched Theo in her arms with her father's storage pouch.
As the wind settled down Helena was gone.
Immediately the strength left Lennon. He sat on the hill , before he knew it he was on his back staring at the stars. He knew what his wife did to save their family from death. When he went to her world, the very aura of the world seeped into his being. She contained the poisonous aura from her world within his body before it could leak out. The moment it left he would die. The moment it was gone his wife and daughter wouldn't have any aura to keep their bodies from deteriorating in this world.
His wife really was the thing holding them together.
Lennon was thankful for having this much time with his daughter. His wife gave him 10 years after she passed."I'm glad I didn't tell her I would die when she left...my baby... stay safe..." as Lennon's breath grew more faint, he saw a woman appear before him and she held open her arms. As soon as he saw his wife he smiled. There was no pain, just calm. "Melina..." Was Lennon's last word spoken. Melina took Lennon's soul to rest. They would never be apart again.
