Chapter 50: A Sad News

The rain had stopped, leaving cold air and the smell of wet soil. Several small children ran around the housing complex, playing in puddles in the potholes. Dirty water splashes everywhere.

Their screams and laughter woke Jasmine from her slumber. She had slept very well this afternoon, perhaps because she had managed to forget her annoyance at Leonardo. Or maybe because of the relationship with her husband that had stretched back together. She doesn't know for sure, but the woman feels so good right now.

"Ah, I'm so hungry. What time is it? Has El cooked?" At 4 pm, Jasmine got out of bed. Put on a clean set of clothes and make the bed. Unconsciously Jasmine nudged the 6R photo frame on the nightstand. The wedding photo fell, broke.

PYAR!!

"Oh my gosh." Jasmine squealed. She rushed to clean up the broken glass.

"Auch!!" The shards of glass scratched her fingertips, red blood oozing out. Jasmine sucked the finger as a form of first aid.

"El?" Jasmine's feelings became terrible. She felt uneasy. Jasmine quickly got up, looking for her cell phone. She tried to contact Rafael.

[Hurry up, El!! Lift my call!! I want to hear your voice.] Jasmine thought to herself. She kept biting the tip of her thumb to ease the anxiety.

The number you dialed did not—

Tut...

Jasmine tried again ... again ... again ... and again ... Jasmine did not give up. She tried to call her husband's cell phone non-stop.

[Please, El. Lift!] said Jasmine in her heart.

Jasmine paced back and forth with the phone still to her ear. Again only the answering machine answered Jasmine's call. Jasmine couldn't stand it. Still, she had to find Rafael, but where? Where should Jasmine look for her husband? As far as Jasmine knows, Rafael doesn't have any relatives and friends, only Albert, that's not even close.

"Should I see Father Albert?" Jasmine mumbled. She quickly headed for the room to change into more appropriate clothes.

However, before the door handle was pressed, a loud knock on the main door of the tiny house made Jasmine stopped.

"Excuse me," they said.

"Who?" Jasmine rushed to open the main door. Several well-built men in police uniforms looked at Jasmine with pity, making Jasmine feel astonished.

"W-what is it, sir?" Jasmine stuttered, her eyes still glancing at the police officers one by one, all looking firm but gentle at the same time.

"Is it true that you are Miss Jasmine? Mr. Rafael's wife?" asked the police officer.

"R-right," Jasmine whispered, her face turning pale. What are the police looking for? Does it have anything to do with Raphael? What's wrong with her husband?

The policemen looked at each other for a while, discussing through facial expressions, who would pass the news to Jasmine? Finally, the officer who was standing closest to Jasmine let out a long sigh.

"Miss, your husband died this afternoon. There was a car accident at a crossroads near the church," they said firmly and clearly.

Jasmine froze, her eyes fixed on the officer's figure. Her ears heard, but her brain was unable to respond to anything.

Die?

Her husband died?

No way, they just spent a beautiful morning together. United with love. Her husband is healthy, fit, and well, nothing less than stitches and a few bruises. There was no way a man as excellent as Rafael died from those minor injuries.

"You said something wrong, didn't you? How could my husband die? Don't joke, sir. I don't like it." Jasmine laughed out loud. Making the task of the police officers feel even more difficult.

"Sorry, Miss. Your husband died in an accident." Repeat them.

"Don't lie, sir! I told you I don't like it if you are lying! Even joking is too much! I... I..." Jasmine screamed, and then her tongue went numb. Jasmine felt her world begin to spin, dark, squeezing, and congested. Jasmine's breathing began to feel heavy as if the oxygen was disappearing little by little.

BROK!!

Jasmine fainted on the spot.

"Miss!!"

"Take her to the hospital quickly. Call her family."

"Very well, Commander."

[Hey, Jas, let's get up. Lunch is ready.]

Rafael brought a plate of rice complete with side dishes. Jasmine smiled. She rushed up and hugged her husband. Hugging Rafael tightly, his athletic body felt warm. His sturdy arms felt so comfortable. Jasmine continued to cling tightly, not wanting to let go of that embrace. The woman was afraid when released, Rafael would leave her.

[I thought it was all just a bad dream. You can't leave me alone, El. You have a promise to full fill the rest of our lives together.] Jasmine stared intently at Rafael's face. Raphael smiled warmly, sweetly. His broad hand stroked Jasmine's beautiful face. Raphael's face slowly approached, giving a kiss, an intimate kiss.

[Live happily, Jas. Eat regularly. You are thin and frail. Don't be sick, don't be sad. You are prettier when you smile. I love to see your smile.] Rafael stroked the top of Jasmine's head.

[Is it true that you have left me, El?] Jasmine's tears fell, flowing freely. His heart ached, his heart constricted. Even here, Rafael did not want to live with him.

[I'm sorry, Jas.]

[Can I come with you, El?] Jasmine asked, Rafael, shaking his head.

[Why? There's still a lot I want to tell you, though. There's still so much I want to share with you. There's still so much I want to do with you.] Jasmine gripped Rafael's wrist tightly.

[Hey, Jas. Even though it's late, I want to tell you something.] Rafael gripped Jasmine's hand tightly, gently stroking the back of her hand with his thumb.

[What is it, El?]

[I love you, Jas. And thank you for loving a lowly man like me, thank you for giving color to my black and white world. I'm sorry that I never appreciated one year of our relationship] —Raphael's smile.

[Do not say that!! It's okay you don't love me, as long as you don't leave me. I want you by my side.] Jasmine's sobs grew louder.

[I'm sorry, goodbye, Jas.]

"No, no, no!!!!!!" Jasmine screamed and immediately woke up.

Tears welled up in her eyes. Her whole body felt cold and painful. Her bones were aching, very painful. The saddest thing was her heart hurt because she lost the person she loved the most in her life. The most memorable and most meaningful person. The first love in her flat and flawed life. The one who gave Jasmine the chance to feel a sliver of happiness.

"Jasmine!! Honey!! Be strong." A middle-aged woman hugged Jasmine, hugging her daughter.

"Mother, is this all a lie? This is all just a dream? Rafael is still alive! Soon he will come to pick up Jasmine here, right?" Jasmine hugged the woman, crying in her arms.

"Sissy, please don't be like this. Rafael is dead. You have to grade it so that brother Rafael can rest in peace." Ameera, the younger sister, also hugged Jasmine. The three hugged each other while crying. He was weeping for Jasmine's sad fate, also Rafael's short life.

"No!! Rafael!! Don't leave me." Jasmine burst into tears. Fill the inpatient room of a hospital. After collapsing, the police officers took Jasmine to the nearest hospital. The woman must have been shocked to hear the news about her husband.

Jasmine's mother and sister, who heard the sad news, rushed to the city. Headed straight to the hospital and found Jasmine lying helplessly on the bed. Jasmine's body kept on shivering. Her lips quivered, Jasmine kept on deliriously calling out Rafael's name.

Because the woman was weak, full of mental stress, and lacked nutrition the last few days, her body could not bear this burden. Jasmine had been unconscious for almost 30 hours. Nearly a full day and a half.

"Where's Rafael, Mom? Where's my husband?" Jasmine wiped her tears. Her face was red. Her eyes were puffy from crying too much.

"They cleaned the body and put it in the coffin. Now the coffin is in front of the pulpit. Soon there will be a funeral service, Jas. They are just waiting for you to wake up so you can do your last respects as his wife." Jasmine's mother wept when she found her daughter drowning in grief.

"Why didn't Jasmine bath him, Mom?! Jasmine wants to clean his body for the last time." Jasmine was stunned. Her husband had already entered the coffin.

"Sis, Rafael's face is crushed. His body is also damaged. Rafael's body keeps bleeding, and I'm also afraid that you can't do it. So I asked the hospital staff to clean up the body." Ameera answered Jasmine's question.

"Take me there now. Would you please take me to see my husband? I have to be with him. I have to be by his side." Jasmine cried. The woman staggered to her feet forcibly pulled out the IV tube.

"Jasmine!! Don't be like this. Take it slow!" her mother cried.

"Sister, please take care of yourself too. If you get hurt until something bad happens, what about Mother and Mera, Sis??" Ameera stopped Jasmine's reckless behavior. The girl suppressed the blood that kept dripping from her sister's wrist.

"You still have, Mother and Mera, Sis. But Mother and Mera only have one Jasmine." Ameera cries. Jasmine also cries.

"Rafael also definitely doesn't want to see you sad." Ameera hugged Jasmine, stroking her sister's back.

The warmth of Ameera's embrace made Jasmine even louder. Her heart was shattered into pieces. She had to give up Rafael also for the sake of the family she loved.

Jasmine's sobs broke out, filling the cold, deserted hospital corridor. Jasmine's body slumped down, hugged her knees, and curled up in sorrow.

Leonardo stood behind the bend in the corridor, watching all that was happening. He lowered his head, not knowing what he was feeling right now.

Happy?

Or even...

Feel guilty?

We don't know. Only Leonardo knows.

"Let's go, Kesya." Take Leonardo.

"Jes, Mr. Leon," answered Kesya.
