'Did I lose him?' Apate thought as he breathed heavily while leaning on a building. After going through the door, he continued running for some time. He didn't know how long he ran, but judging from the death threats his lungs were whispering to him, he guessed it was a while.
Despite his current situation, there was a question that plagued Apate's mind, how the hell was he still alive? 'That bastard can take other people's quirks, right? So he must have a tracking quirk. If so, why am I not dead? He might need a sample for the quirk, since most tracking quirks need a sample, but there's no way he doesn't have one...' However, Apate was wrong. Due to his arrogance, All For One didn't feel the need to take a sample, seeing as he'd just kill Apate.
Anyway, time wasn't on Apate's side, so he chose to focus on running instead of continuing to ponder about the subject. Apate sneakily made his way back to the slums, as his ragged clothes would gather a lot of unwanted attention in this polished area for the rich.

"Do you expect me to believe that?" Alon raised a brow as he listened to Apate as the latter prepared to run away. "Well, yeah. What reason do I have to lie? I'm running away anyway. You took good care of me, so I think I at least owe you that much. So... Bye!" Apate waved back to Alon as he walked off, leaving the old man to his thoughts.
Apate quickly walked away. He wanted to get as far away as he could from this place in the shortest time he could. However, as he was walking away, a commotion caught his eye. Apate's head turned to take a quick look, but what he saw made him stop.
Apate noticed the group that snitched on him terrorizing some poor man, from what he managed to hear it was about some money. 'Well, I think I can take a minute or two for some revenge,' Apate thought as he walked towards the group.
"Yo!" Apate casually waved his hand with a smirk on his face as he grabbed the attention of the surrounding people. Ray turned around to see what the commotion was about, and his face immediately dawned a horror-filled expression.
"Ray? What's w-" a member of the group asked before seeing Apate and turning quiet. "Oh? What's with this silence? I took you guys for the talkative types~" Apate teased as he continued walking.
"A-Apate, listen. W-we didn't have a c-choice, If-" Ray began to make an excuse but Apate stopped him by controlling his mind. "Shut up. You guys sold me out, so I think I'm entitled to some payback no? What to do, what to do. I mean, I can control you to do anything, after all~" Apate jokingly said. He was mad, but he wasn't going to do anything too bad to them since he did understand their point of view. He mostly wanted to scare them a little.
However, Apate didn't realize the weight his words held. Having experienced the horror of Mind Control from personal experience and more than enough horror stories from other unfortunate victims, the group immediately knew what to do. When words like what Apate spoke were uttered, it was an indication that they'd have to do unspeakable things to themselves as well as their friends. With a determined look, each one of them took out a hidden knife. Apate prepared himself for a fight, but before he could react, the group members started stabbing their hearts.
Ray was the last one to do so, but before he could Apate broke from his shock and stopped him with mind control. "W-WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!" Apate yelled with a shocked expression. "It's better... To die by our own terms... Then to die... From the horrors you'll inflict on us!" Ray struggled to speak as he tried to unsuccessfully stab himself, Apate's control only fueling his fear and resolve.
Apate looked around, and he saw all the people backing away with fear and terror on their faces. They looked at Apate as if he was a monster. For some time, no sound was heard except Ray's grunts and weeps as he tried to stab himself while breaking into tears surrounded by all his dead friends.
Tears made their way down Apate's cheek as he released his control over Ray, and the latter stabbed himself deep in the heart. Apate just stood still as he took all of it in. His quirk was a very powerful form of mind control, but he never followed the logical extension of that fact. He didn't realize what it meant to control people, and this was the result. He had no problem with simple killing, but he despised torture. He saw his Dad do it to so many poor souls.
As he walked away, Apate promised himself he'd use his quirk as sparingly as possible. He knew he'd need to use it sometimes, but he vowed that even if he needed to use it he'd keep the use as minimal as possible.
As time went on, and the years passed, Apate's hatred for his quirk increased. He traveled to numerous places, and sometimes he couldn't keep his quirk a secret. The horror in people's eyes as he walked past them, the fake attitude in which everyone tried to butter him up, and the endless assassination attempts. His friendships would crash down in an instant, and he would have to leave one again. only one thought lingered in his mind, and it was-

"Apate!" Atalanta called out his name loudly. "Huh?" Apate replied with dark circles beneath his eyes. "Stop acting like a statue, we need to get going," Atalanta said. "Oh, coming," Apate replied with a tired voice as the group continued on their way.
