After that conversation, the two families celebrated David's birthday with a celebratory meal from a bird they caught and some vegetables they bought. "This is so good!" David exclaimed as he ate the birds' meat. "Damn Ethan, we have to make you cook more often", Alex jokingly said. "As long as you bring me meat, I'll cook whatever you want", Ethan jokingly replied while eating his portion.
After the meal, the parents started talking about the approaching gang and countermeasures, while David and Sarah played in the sand of the desert. Sarah noticed that David acted a little off. He played in the sand half-heartedly while daydreaming which was very odd for him. Sarah, however, already expected this scenario. It was something everyone in the settlement was bound to experience. "David, you're being awfully quiet... Do you want to talk about something?" She tried to initiate a conversation.
"I just thought about my situation", David replied with an unusually sad tone, "I'm stuck with martial arts that will be useless against anyone with a mildly useful quirk. Last year, my parents fought a gang that had a leader with a minor super-strength quirk, and they barely came out of that fight alive. The difference is just too big, and I worry that I won't be able to carry my weight when they'll need my help".
"Why would a quirk user who is actually worth their stuff come here? We have nothing for them to take except some food. And if they come here for a power-high, they will be on their way the next day after getting bored", Sarah said.
David stared at her with a weird expression, "Did you forget about all the rape and murder that those idiots try to do? Both things have happened multiple times before, it's not something special". "But they were stopped by your parents!", Sarah argued. "Not all of them, and the ones that were stopped had weak quirks, if someone competent were to come my parents wouldn't be able to do a single thing".
"Listen, I get what you're saying but you can't hold yourself on "what if"s. Of course something like that can happen, but it's like I would say what if the plant would just randomly explode. Actually, I bet someone has the quirk to make that happen. Even so, are you going to live in fear until the planet gets destroyed? And even if you are right, let's say a Warlord decides to destroy us, what can you possibly do about it? Don't worry about things you can't control. You'll just stress yourself out".
"...*Sigh* you make a very good argument, I'll give you that", David replied. "Hahaha of course I do! Now stop ruining the celebratory mood and come play", Sarah said while building something in the sand. "What is that?! I thought you said you got better. I'll show you how to do it properly", David said as he started to build a structure of his own. "Oh, you're on!" Sarah announced and started building.
After that, the two families said goodby as it was late in the evening.
"Goodnight David", Ethan said as David prepared to go to sleep. "Goodnight Dad", he replied. "Goodnight Mom!" David said a little loudly since his mom was on the other side of the ruined house. "Goodnight David!" He heard a shout from the other side of the house.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David couldn't sleep. This was very odd for him since he never really had any trouble falling asleep, but this time he just couldn't. He turned and twisted on his wooden bed, but nothing helped. He even got down from his bed and attempted to sleep on the soft sand, well aware that it'll get all over him and it'll be hell to remove the damn thing from his clothes tomorrow, but he just could not fall asleep.
And he felt weird. His body felt... Off. He felt as if his body telling him to prepare for something, but he didn't know what. Then it happened.
David felt his instincts screaming at him to let them take over, David didn't object and let his body guide him. He suddenly grabbed his staff from the wall and did something on impulse. He grabbed his staff tightly from the slight stress of what just happened, but his staff felt... Tougher, and when he tried to bend it he discovered he couldn't. Although he couldn't snap it in half with his normal strength, he could definitely bend it somewhat, so this change baffled him. Then he realized! He must have managed to Awaken a quirk!
But he couldn't tell anyone right now. David only knew that his quirk could affect objects, but he didn't know to what extent nor what he could actually do besides harden things. Either way though, David knew what would happen to him if someone finds out he could at least strengthen weapons.
David knew his quirk was very useful, both to himself and to others. He knew that if he revealed his quirk he would almost certainly be kidnapped and made a slave for weapon manufacturers. Guns were a rare weapon since it was hard to get a steady supply of bullets, so if he could increase the effectiveness of melee weapons he would be an invaluable asset. And even if he wasn't kidnapped, the relationships of the quirkless settlement will change, with everyone either despising him or kissing his ass and trying to manipulate him. And in both scenarios, he and his parents will eventually have to leave.
He couldn't even tell his parents since they, especially his mom, could not keep a secret whether their life depended on it.
But even in a case like this David was happy, how could he not be. He managed to awaken a quirk against all odds! Now he only needed to do some testing.

Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed the chapter, I'll say this now so you better listen. My upload schedule is a hot pile of garbage. I'll try to upload at least once a week but no promises. Also, if you're wondering how the fuck do four-year-olds talk like that, the answer is simple: Anime logic. But if you want a serious explanation there is one. Basically, these kids have been raised in a devastating warzone. Like I said in the chapter, they may be four, but they have been exposed to humanity's worst side for so long they've gotten used to it. They'll still have child-like innocence, just in other things. I may be stretching the age a bit, seeing as they're only four, but in the end, does a year or two really matter in this area? I mean, yes, but ignore that, please.
