Chapter 44: Soul Door

Max leaned casually against the villa's door, gazing thoughtfully toward Lorna beneath the sprawling maple tree in the distance. Rather than walking over and risking awkwardness, Max opted to ponder the situation from a distance.

Amidst his contemplation, a sudden sense of peril jolted through Max. His eyes shot upward just in time to spot a coin hurtling toward him. Acting on instinct, Max tracked the coin's trajectory and, without a second thought, swung open a door directly onto his chest. The door, resembling an arch without panels, was an unexpected shield, and the coin seamlessly sailed into it.

"Damn..." Lorna muttered, fazed by the bizarre encounter.

Lorna, wide-eyed, observed the arch on Max's chest, realizing the coin's magnetic field was undetectable within.

"Cool trick, huh?" Max shrugged off Lorna's astonishment, noting the improved speed of his door creation and its seamless integration with his body structure. "Not exactly my doing, but it does look good, thanks."

Lorna's embarrassment, now overshadowed by curiosity, asked, "You did that?"

Max nodded, saying, "Only this time."

"If you show off like that again, I might not mind," Lorna teased, a playful smile on her face.

Max chuckled, "I'll keep that in mind. But now, how about I introduce you to Kitty?"

"Sure," Lorna agreed, and Max led her upstairs to meet Kitty. Satisfied with their interaction, Max excused himself and returned to his room, acknowledging the need for further refinement of his newfound ability.

Understanding the body's structure wasn't just for parlor tricks; it extended to unlocking the door of the soul at a deeper level. Lorna stayed for several days, occasionally becoming willing to participate in Max's demonstrations. However, as the Mutant underground base grew busier, Max eventually escorted Lorna back.

After Lorna's departure, life settled into a routine. Viper continued her research, Kitty's health improved, and Yukio managed food supplies while exploring the surroundings. Max, balancing the development of his abilities and occasional missions for the Mutant underground organization, found solace in the simplicity of those days, even if they weren't counted as the unpaid help Lorna had jokingly referred to.

Amidst the calm and serenity in Max's world, the same could not be said for others.

The Sentry Secret Service remained in the dark about Max's whereabouts. Their focus, however, shifted to an underground organization renowned for aiding Mutants in escaping prisons, evading pursuers, and even facilitating their exit from the United States across the border—the Mutant Underground Organization.

Officially registered with the Sentry Secret Service, this clandestine group became a prime target for the agency's relentless pursuit. While Max operated as a lone mercenary, the organized efforts of the underground group posed a more significant threat in the eyes of the Sentry Secret Service.

The agency redirected its resources to combat this secretive organization, recognizing it as a formidable adversary. In their eyes, Max was just one individual. Still, the Mutant underground organization represented a collective force that demanded their utmost attention and vigilance. The stakes were higher, and the shadows cast by the secretive organization loomed more extensive on the Sentry Secret Service's radar.

The sun's warmth enveloped the scene as maple leaves danced and whispered in the gentle breeze. Kitty stood by the villa's door, her gaze fixed on Max, who sat beneath a tree in the distance. Unbeknownst to them, three months had quietly passed, and Kitty's once-severe injury was now nearing complete healing.

Kitty had become familiar with Max and the others as they all coexisted harmoniously in this period. The peaceful and fulfilling days they shared stirred memories of her bygone school days.

Suddenly, a burst of laughter reached Max under the tree. "Finally made it!" he exclaimed excitedly, rising to his feet.

"Successful?" Kitty called out, her voice carrying anticipation.

Max walked over, nodding affirmatively. "Yes, after three months, I've finally succeeded in developing the door of the soul."

Three months of relentless effort had paid off. Max mastered the ability to let his body open a protective door to counteract damage and made significant strides in researching the spiritual door. Now, he had successfully constructed a spiritual door on his own spiritual level.

"Congratulations!" Kitty genuinely expressed her happiness for Max. Over the past three months, she had witnessed his dedication and endured numerous failures.

Max, ever modest, responded, "It's not too late to congratulate me after I'm sure it works. I'll go to Lorna's side and try with Sonia!"

With those words, Max hopped into the car. Inside, he waved his hand towards the front, and instantly, a door materialized in the vehicle's path. This achievement marked another outcome of the past three months' hard work—he could now open the door within a specific range instead of only where he physically touched it.
