Chapter 165: Chapter 165: Woke up

"It's a beautiful curveball! This ball flies high and far!"

"The audience doesn't know that as long as this guy swings his bat, the outcome of the game will change!"

In the middle of an intense baseball game, Steve slowly opened his eyes.

Feeling a bit confused, he looked around.

It was an ordinary hospital room. His mother used to work at the hospital, and he would often visit, so it felt familiar.

He glanced out the window and saw the tall buildings, the familiar view of New York City, but something seemed different.

He couldn't figure out exactly what was different. Is mind was still foggy because he had just woken up.

"Sleeping beauty finally wakes up!"

The sudden voice startled Steve, and he instinctively took a defensive stance, looking behind him.

Then he saw a familiar face.

"You... You're... Jack?"

Indeed, it was Jack sitting in a chair with his legs crossed, holding two cups of coffee.

"I was wondering when you would wake up."

Jack placed the coffee on the bedside table and casually turned off the radio.

He mumbled to himself, "This was a game from May 1941. They didn't know you were there at the game?"

In the surveillance room, Nick, who had been observing everything, had a darker expression on his face.

He glanced at Coulson standing behind him.

"..."

Coulson looked a bit embarrassed, pretending not to have seen, and coughed a couple of times to cover up the awkwardness.

"How is he doing?"

At that moment, a tall person pushed open the door of the surveillance room and walked in.

Nick glanced at her and sighed, "You better go and tell him in person."

The person looked at the confused Steve on the surveillance screen, a warm smile forming at the corner of her mouth.

She nodded silently, turned around, and left.

Inside the hospital room, Steve still hadn't fully understood what had happened.

He remembered piloting the plane into the ocean, and in the very last moment, he only felt endless coldness before losing consciousness.

The next moment he opened his eyes, he found himself in a hospital, with his friend appearing next to him like a ghost.

He was sure that the door hadn't been opened just now, and there was no one else there!

Could it be... he was dreaming?

"It looks like you need a cup of coffee to wake up."

Jack seemed unaware of Steve's suspicion as he picked up a cup of coffee and handed it to him.

Steve reluctantly took it, looking at the steaming coffee inside the cup and feeling its warmth.

He looked back at Jack.

"What... What exactly is going on?"

He felt uneasy, not just about the hospital room but even about Jack in front of him. He wasn't sure if it was all his imagination.

Was he already dead? And is this place heaven?

Steve's question made Jack pause, his lips trembling slightly.

He took a deep breath and spoke seriously, "Listen buddy, there are some things that you might find hard to understand and accept, but... we have no choice, do we?"

As Jack spoke, Steve's anxiety grew more intense.

He looked at Jack, took two steps back to create some space, and his expression became solemn. "Tell me! What exactly happened?"

"Uh..."

Jack was about to say something when the door to the hospital room was pushed open again, and a woman walked in.

"Let me handle this, Jack. You're terrible at talking!"

When hearing the voice, Jack breathed a sigh of relief and turned around, gratefully addressing the woman, "Thank you so much, Peggy. I knew it would be simpler if you took over!"

With that, he quickly passed by the woman, Peggy, and escaped.

"...You... Peggy?"

Steve looked at Peggy in front of him, feeling a mixture of surprise and disbelief. She was still as beautiful as ever, just like when they first met.

But he still had some doubts. Was all of this really true?

"I am real, soldier."

Peggy seemed to immediately sense his doubts. Her lips curved slightly as she confidently approached him, grabbing his collar and saying, "Perhaps this will make you more alert!"

The fiery red lips directly kissed the confused Steve!

Jack, who had just arrived in the surveillance room, happened to witness this scene and couldn't help but whistle with a mischievous grin.

'Having a passionate encounter right after waking up. Tsk tsk, Steve's charm is still as strong as ever.'

Everyone in the control room glanced at him but remained silent, except for Coulson, who had a smile and secretly gave him a thumbs up.

"By the way, Nick, is S.H.I.E.L.D. really that poor?"

Jack couldn't help but start complaining.

"It's one thing to use a few pieces of old wood to build a hospital room, but even the baseball game is messed up? Not just Steve, even an ordinary person would notice something is off just by looking at the windows a little more."

"..."

Nick was momentarily speechless, staring at the surveillance footage for a while before finally saying, "We don't have budget."

Jack snorted at this reason, feeling like he was giving Nick a face by not exposing him on the spot.

If he hadn't seen S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in the TV series, he might have believed it.

So many secret safehouses appearing out of thin air?

Who knows how much embezzlement this bastard might be involved in?

Putting that aside, in the hospital room, Peggy said something that seemed to calm Steve's emotions, and finally, Peggy led Steve out of the room.

"Alright, it's none of my business now. Goodbye."

As Steve was led away by Peggy, Jack breathed a sigh of relief.

He was about to leave when the door to the surveillance room was pushed open again, and Peggy stuck her head in, calling him over.

"Jack, come over. Let's talk."

"..."

Half an hour later.

"We...plan to get married!"

In the coffee shop, Jack, who was about to enjoy a delicious pudding, was shocked to the core by this news.

The pudding on his plate instantly lost its appeal. He looked at Steve and Peggy sitting across from him in surprise, doubting if they had switched bodies.

Come on, you two had a good... but... it's been decades. Steve, you didn't say anything, what about Peggy?

Don't tell me you never loved anyone else!

Jack, who had watched Avengers: Endgame, knew there should be an old Steve from another timeline in this world...

Wait a minute!

Suddenly, Jack's expression changed, and his consciousness instantly swept across the entire Earth!

Then he discovered something very interesting!

In this world, there was no old Steve!

He hadn't thought about it before, but this situation seemed quite normal now that he carefully thought about it.

Because of his existence, his timeline was hidden away. To enter this universe, it required more than just luck.

In other words, because of him, no other Steves from other universes had crossed over here!

Hmm, it makes sense when you think about it like that!
