Arthur found Lily's father's study, opened the door and his eyes widened.
So many bookshelves!
There was a desk in the middle of the room, surrounded by a circle of bookshelves.
Arthur couldn't help but swallow hard. His first thought was, "How much could all this sell for?"
He had suffered from poverty and didn't even have money to buy books.
The only significant purchase he had made at that time was a set of books on genetics.
Later, he had to scrounge. Even when he collected books while hunting spies, the haul wasn't much.
After all, not everyone liked to fill their study with books as Lindsay did.
Not to mention that some spies were even poorer than Arthur.
At that moment, seeing so many books, Arthur felt like he was in paradise!
He wandered around the bookshelves and found that these books fell into several categories.
Computer operations, programming, and related topics took up part of the shelves. There were also books on martial arts techniques, the thin ones filled with handwritten notes, indicating that they were of great importance.
In addition, there were books on history, astronomy, geography, magazines... books on various subjects were all there.
There were even many world classics.
However, even when Arthur touched these books, no prompt from the Disassembler appeared.
"It seems I don't have the potential to be a great literary figure..."
Arthur blinked and suddenly noticed an out-of-place section on one of the bookshelves.
The whole section was slightly protruding.
He removed the books and discovered a book hidden in the back of the shelf, wrapped in a thick gray cloth.
Arthur took the book out and was surprised, "What could be so precious to be hidden like this?
Normally, something that was kept so carefully would be valuable.
Lily's father probably didn't have the means to build a secret room, so he had to hide the book this way.
"Could it be..."
Arthur looked at the book and widened his eyes, "Is this some kind of hidden adult book from Lily's father?"
All right, that was just a joke.
Arthur unwrapped the cloth, revealing an ancient-looking book.
There were no words on the cover, just a strange eye symbol.
When he touched the cover, the Disassembler prompt appeared as expected.
"Do you wish to disassemble the Mystic Book (The Eye of Horus)?"
"Mystical book? The Eye of Horus?"
Arthur blinked and remembered seeing a similar book in a small bookstore in New York, but there had been no prompt then.
At the time, Arthur hadn't thought much of it, but now... an idea formed in his mind.
Without much hesitation, he decided to take it apart!
The sound of gears turning began, and Arthur took out a martial arts manual and sat down to read while he waited for the Disassembler to finish its work.
After a while, he found the manual difficult to understand. It was written in classical Chinese, filled with ambiguous terms and many specialized phrases that made Arthur's head spin.
Just then, the disassembling sound stopped, and Arthur shifted his attention.
"Announcement!"
"Item successfully disassembled!"
"Mystic Knowledge (Eye of Horus) *2"
"Disassembly experience +1"
"Disassembly complete. Would you like to extract now?"
"Two books?" Arthur blinked.
He extracted the two disassembled books.
In the next moment, new knowledge flooded into Arthur's mind.
Unlike the knowledge of genetics, this new information was primarily basic mystical knowledge, with one important concept highlighted.
"The Eye of Horus?"
Arthur muttered to himself while scratching his head.
He had learned how to use the Eye of Horus.
But Arthur was confused, "Can this really work?"
He stretched out his finger and naturally drew a symbol in the air - a strange eye pattern, just like the one on the book cover.
Until today, he had never heard of the so-called Eye of Horus.
But now, drawing it felt incredibly smooth.
However, after he finished drawing it... nothing happened!
"Did I just have an awkward moment? This is even more embarrassing than snapping my fingers!"
Even though there was no one around, Arthur's face turned red with embarrassment and he wished he could find a hole to hide in.
But in the next moment, another idea popped into his head.
He took a deep breath, looked at the door, and quickly locked it.
He didn't want Lily to barge in and see him in what would look like a delusional phase of a middle schooler - he would die of embarrassment!
She might kick him out, and he'd have no excuse to defend himself.
He jumped around a few times to get the energy flowing in his body, then shook his hands, feeling that this might help channel the energy into his fingertips.
When the energy in his fingers felt particularly active, Arthur seized the moment and drew in the air!
With a single stroke, a trail appeared in the air and Arthur's eyes widened in amazement.
The trace was like a ripple of water, clear and transparent.
Without hesitation, Arthur focused and continued to draw the Eye of Horus symbol in the air, each stroke carefully following the trace.
When finished, the Eye of Horus hovered in front of Arthur.
With a thought, an identical symbol appeared on his forehead.
Not only that, but he now had two perspectives!
One was his usual vision, and the other was through the Eye of Horus.
Arthur could control the Eye's view, allowing him to see through walls, soar high, and observe distant places.
Although he was still unfamiliar with the technique, the range of the Eye was about 200 meters, which was impressive enough!
"It really works!"
As soon as the thought crossed his mind, the Eye of Horus disappeared, along with the symbol on his forehead.
For a brief moment, Arthur felt like a blind man; the sudden darkness in the additional perspective made him uneasy.
But the unease quickly faded. Arthur looked at his hand and gently patted his forehead: "Could it be... that I have found a way to use my inner energy? This power... can actually be used to cast mystical spells?"
"According to my current knowledge of mysticism, the Eye of Horus has three uses: healing, courage, and surveillance! Now... it seems I can only use one."
Arthur blinked: "Should I give myself a nickname, like the Crimson Warlock? Does that mean I've started practicing both martial and mystical arts?"
*P.S.: Yes, the energy from the crystal has given the protagonist a way to utilize it… Many might have guessed it… Indeed, it's not just for lighting cigarettes…*
(End of chapter)
Although the Eye of Horus was an unexpected gain, it sparked new ideas in Arthur.
Arthur wasn't quite sure what kind of person Randolph was.
His first plan was to find some computer-related books to learn hacking skills. The idea was to remotely monitor Randolph and, if things went well, gather some necessary evidence.
Then, on a dark, moonless night, he could knock Randolph out, stuff him in a bag, and drop him off at the police station.
Problem solved.
But now... with the Eye of Horus, could he use it to watch Randolph directly?
"Hmm, I really am a genius!"
Arthur glanced around the study one last time, feeling lucky to have found this book first.
Despite Lily's harsh words that he could use any book in the room and it didn't matter if he didn't return it, the spotless state of the room showed that she cleaned it often.
If she didn't care, why clean it so often?
"Hard on the outside, soft on the inside."
Arthur shook his head. If he really took apart all the books in this room, she'd probably end up crying under her blanket.
He opened the door to leave.
Lily stood there with her arms crossed, using her usual haughty tone: "What sneaky things did you do in there? You even locked the door?"
"When did you get here?"
Arthur was stunned. His hearing was incredibly sharp, yet he hadn't noticed her at the door.
It must have been because he was distracted while using the Eye of Horus.
"None of your business..."
Lily squeezed past Arthur into the room and exaggeratedly sniffed around before saying, "Why don't I smell a fishy odor?"
"..."
Arthur was silent for two seconds before answering: "Fishy smell?"
"Mind your business." Lily glared at him. "Can't I read about it in books?"
"No problem!"
Arthur raised his hands in surrender and thought to himself: "Why is she reacting so fast this time?"
Lily rolled her eyes at Arthur, went to the bookshelf, and picked out a few books to give to him: "I don't know your level, but if you're starting from scratch, these are the best for you. Let's go, time for breakfast."
"..."
Arthur looked at the books, not sure what to say.
Should he tell her that he was already ready to leave the sea of knowledge?
He just thanked her, took the books, and followed her.
They went into the living room where breakfast was simple - sandwiches with bread and lettuce, a cup of milk each, and two fried eggs.
After breakfast, Arthur took the initiative to do the dishes.
When he finished, he came out of the kitchen and saw Lily holding a pile of clothes: "You don't seem to have many clothes. They were my father's. If you don't mind, you can wear them."
"Thank you."
Arthur took the clothes with both hands and looked at the pile of books on the table.
Lily looked annoyed: "What a hassle."
Then she put the books on top of the clothes: "I prepared a set of keys for you. They're on the wall by the door. You can go out and wander around, and if you can, feel free to get lost. There are so many people who go missing every year; one more won't matter. Also, I suggest you get a job while you're out there...not having an ID is a problem, but there's always a way, right? Oh, and don't bother me in my room. I'm working on a big art project. If you interrupt, don't blame me if I get mad!"
"Right, right, Lily of the society, flat-chested but wild at heart!"
Arthur nodded quickly.
Lily nodded in satisfaction. It wasn't until Arthur returned to his room with the clothes that she realized, "Who the hell are you calling flat-chested?"
Arthur heard Lily's angry scream from outside his door and nodded silently, "Hmm, now that's the normal reaction speed!"
He laid the clothes on the bed and inspected them. They were very clean, though a bit old-fashioned in style.
He chose a pair of jeans and a plaid shirt.
Looking in the mirror, he felt that the outfit made him look ten years older...
He chuckled and didn't mind.
What really bothered him was... there was no underwear.
Wearing those stiff jeans was quite uncomfortable.
"It's a good thing my body was strengthened, otherwise I wouldn't be able to bear these old jeans."
Listening carefully to the silence outside, Arthur quietly opened the door.
Lily's room was silent, indicating that she was probably engrossed in her "big art project. Arthur could smell the paint and turpentine even through the door.
She was probably painting in her room.
He took the opportunity to tiptoe downstairs. He hadn't really looked around yesterday, but now he saw that the so-called martial arts hall on the first floor wasn't very big.
It was completely empty, without even a wooden dummy.
Arthur shook his head and went to the door, where he saw the set of keys Lily had mentioned hanging on the wall.
He took them, opened the door, and stepped out into the street.
With a totally different style and appearance.
Last night was just a glimpse; today, Arthur finally saw the difference between this era and the World War II era.
For some reason, he suddenly thought of Steve.
In the movie, after being a popsicle for seventy years, Steve walks out onto the street and looks at the people, the tall buildings, and the busy traffic.
Different scenery, different culture... What did he feel?
Arthur could understand something, but it wasn't as deep as what Steve must have felt.
After all, Steve was really from that time... but Arthur was not.
With his hands in his pockets, Arthur walked down the street, not expecting to find who he was looking for so easily.
But after walking a short distance, he heard some unusual sounds.
The sound of fists striking a person!
Arthur had heard this sound many times before and could easily recognize it. He immediately turned and walked towards the source of the sound.
In a narrow alley, he saw a group of thugs at work.
Their job, of course, was bullying someone.
The person being bullied was already on the ground, while a freckle-faced youngster was searching his body.
Arthur arrived just in time to see this scene and was almost shocked: "Wow… didn't expect you guys to be into this sort of thing."
