Chapter 45: Confessions

Richard’s POV

I listened to the soft shuffling of feet from the approaching person. The door to the study slowly creaked open.

“Why is it so dark in here, Darling?”

“Keep it that way,” I warned, setting the tone of this discussion. I wasn’t quite sure where this confrontation could lead. All I knew was that I needed to put an end to this quarrel once and for all. Louvel didn’t utter a word and instead cleared her throat.

I remained seated on my leather chair, facing the window behind my large oak desk. The sun was about to set, saying goodbye and promising to come again tomorrow.

My fingers played with the necklace in my hand, thoughts of my late, beloved wife springing to mind.

“What is this about, Richard?”

Louvel must have gotten the message. I would be surprised if she didn’t. After all, Maurice’s visit didn’t go unnoticed.

“I only have one question, Louvel. I need you to answer me according to your truth.”

“My… truth?”
