They stared at him in surprise, then exchanged glances and shrugged. “Fine.” They tossed him into the back of the van none too gently before going back for the second one, who got the same treatment.

“Interesting,” Perry observed. “My lawyer, not a lawyer. I wonder if we’ll have a bunch of shysters descending on us tomorrow.”

“Y’know, it might be a good idea to let them make that phone call.”

“What?”

“We’ll see who shows up and follow the trail back to who hired them.” Or not. Their employer might decide to cut them loose.

The third asshole, the one my kid had beaned, was still out cold.

Nature or nurture, whichever it was, damn, it made me proud.

Perry turned to me, all business now. “We’ll get what we can out of them, but it might not be much.”

“Want my help?”

“Not…tonight.”

For some reason, I got the impression he’d nearly said, “Not in this lifetime.”
