It has been a few days since I came home but we haven't made any progress. We knew who the caster was, but we had no idea what triggered the curse, what the conditions were or how to break it. My father sent out his trusted men to gather intel and search for clues, but nothing came of it.
Everyone knew that the princess was colluding with the enemy, but when and where they met, who and how taught her to use curses was a mystery.
I was happy to be back with my family and having Eiran by my side kept my anxiety and fear at bay, but still. I felt so helpless and incapable that sometimes I just wanted to run into the wall.
I sighed as I leaned back and my mother squeezed my hand. She sat next to me and watched my father give instructions to Rihian and Eiran as she sipped her tea. I wasn't sure if she wanted to reassure me or if she needed a reminder that I was there, but I didn't complain.
We have developed a new daily route since I returned. We had breakfast together in the dining room and then went out to the training field. Mother and I sat in the shade, drinking something and watching the men train. I would have liked to join them, but I felt that my mother needed someone to be there for her so I stayed.
Rihian and Eiran sometimes sparred, sometimes they practiced alone while my father gave them guidance and advice. It would have been nice if this was our everyday life, but my father's condition kept reminding me.
He lost all sensation in his legs and couldn't move a muscle below his hips, so our situation was getting worse day by day. Still, he pretended nothing was wrong. Everyone else did the same and I felt if I didn't follow suit, everything would collapse and break down.
After they worked up quite a sweat, they went back to freshen up and Rihian had to get ready for his classes. Father joined us with Mother's help and a maid served him some coffee.
„Have Maglene and Mr. Prodettier left yet?" My mother asked, turning to me, but looking at my father from the corner of her eye.
„Yes. I bid them farewell before breakfast. I told them to at least stay to eat, but Maglene said she never eats in the morning, and Mr. Prodettier said that he missed his wife so much that he wanted to get home as soon as possible." I smiled a little.
„What a pity!" She sighed. Yeah, Mother was never an early bird. „I wanted to thank them once again for coming to our aid. They did a lot for us."
„Mr. Prodettier said that you've expressed your thanks so many times that it's still ringing in his ear." I gave her a mischievous look and she laughed a little.
„We can visit them in person after I get better. We could go on a little trip while we're at it." My father suggested and my mother's eyes lit up.
It was good that he had a positive outlook, but I was worried that he was pushing himself for our sake. Maybe he thought that looking anxious or disheartened would make us even more miserable, so he put on a brave face. He was fearless, so I didn't think he was afraid of death, but the thought of suddenly leaving your beloved wife and children behind... could weighed heavily on his mind.
There were so many things he wanted to do. Like expanding the family business, rebuilding the inner garden and showering my mother with love and affection, as well as us, his children with attention and care. He didn't have an easy life, he worked hard for everything he has now, so it would be unfair just to take everything away.
If I think about it deeply, I get so furious. What kind of author does this to their main character? You gave him a difficult background and a tough childhood. Yeah, sure, you made him strong and smart but still, going to war is not easy to handle. Bloodshed and so much death... Then you finally blessed him with a happy family and peace... just to take it back? Do you have any common sense? Some decency? How could you do this to him? He deserves only the best!
„Are you okay, my dear?" My mother asked, sensing my quickening breath. I forced a smile on my face.
„Yes, mother." I need to calm down.
„Are you sure?" Their faces were filled with worry. „If you feel..."
„Excuse me, my lord, my lady..." A maid appeared before us and bowed politely. „A visitor has arrived and requested to see you." She informed us.
