Chapter 45: Part 2: Chapter 45: The Calvary’s recue plan

Sam opened the throttle as far as possible, veering through the water. The speed was not enough, but at least they got distance between them and the militia. Alexi clutched the frail body to him with one hand while holding on to the frame of the boat with the other. They kept it up for another hour before Sam eventually slowed enough for Alexi to lose his grip. Sonia stared at him and asked through a parched throat: "Who are you?"

"The Calvary, Ma'am," and he gave her a lopsided grin. She smiled and coughed.

"Water," she rasped. He grabbed a bottle and offered her the drink. When done, she greeted Sam. He nodded a greeting briefly before he turned his focus back to the swamp.

"Thank you! Both of you!" she mumbled. Every muscle ached, but she sat. Alexi covered her and then picked up their weapons.

"Are you thinking what I am thinking?"

"She is a mighty fine lass," Sam acknowledged. "Yep, that she is."

"Our CO is in love with her," Alexi said matter-of-factly.
