Chapter 2: Warrior's Rebirth

Dune's skills leading the army gave us a chance against an enemy with superior numbers and tactics and we were using them to the fullest. He and our generals devised plans that made use of our decreased numbers and outmaneuvered everything the enemy had even their war beasts. Dune was a great warrior but he wasn't a cruel man and spared any enemies who had their spirit broken or was too injured to fight but it didn't always work out.

"Ganes, Semi, help these two men. They're too injured to walk."

Seeing those two men annoyed us for one was an old man, maybe 70 years old and the other was not yet a man. Killing those men would serve no purpose other than to spoil our victory.

"You're as gullible as they say." was the last thing the old man said before set off a magic devise and like a hero, he shielded us from the blast but suffered grave injuries.

"This is nothing." he bellowed before passing out. Our campaign was over for we used the entire army to escort him back to our camp. Thinking about it, placing our collective hopes on the shoulders of one man couldn't be beneficial for our army let alone Dune himself and it was eating at us deeply.

"I can see the camp up ahead." shouted one of the front riders.

The worry that engulfed the group subsided quickly as the camp came into vision but fear grew and replaced it. Men emerged from the camp wielding Cambrian weapons and before we could stop our march, a hail of arrows flew towards us. The arrows landed on the group, some carrying explosives, annihilating a large portion of our army but not reaching Dune's position.

"Can anyone still fight?" shouted general Riah amidst agonized screams. Whoever was left picked up their weapons and moved into C formation with the wounded in the center. The enemy rushed our formation with everything they had, hoping to deal a serious blow by killing Dune. As expected from a group of injured men, our formation started crumbling after few pushes nevertheless no man gave up their position until their last breathe. This fight was a lost cause no matter how hard we fought, we were almost encircled, outnumbered, and archers had their arrows trained on us just in case we actually won. Our deaths were on the horizon and none of us were prepared in the slightest but the death that haunted us most was Dune's. All we could do is pray and hope for a miracle and that's what came to us. The air around Dune starting swirling and his wound started glowing confusing everyone on the field. The air blasted away from him and pushed back the Cambrian forces giving us some breathing room.

"You've fought well and now you saw be rewarded."

Dune started to stand with his wound almost fully healed and a ghastly figure at his back.

"Go." said the figure and without missing a beat, Dune dashed past the formation and attacked the enemy infantry, attacking and defending in a seamless fluid motion. No arrow, swords or spear could do more than graze him while was maximizing damage himself, it was a thing of beauty. After a few minutes the enemies retreated from fear, losing an advantage from a wounded man, once again Dune inspired his men more than any man should.

"Dune, are you alright?" the general asked

"I'm fine." he said before collapsing. He was the first to be inhabited by a spirit changing war forever.
