0.53% Life As Hikigaya Hachiman / Chapter 1: [1] I became Hikigaya Hachiman?

Chapter 1: [1] I became Hikigaya Hachiman?

Youth---

"Youth is a symphony of uncharted melodies, where each note resonates with the vibrancy of dreams and the cadence of endless possibilities."

"Like a canvas untouched by time, youth paints life with the vivid hues of curiosity, dauntless spirit, and the brushstrokes of boundless hope."

"Youthfulness is about how you live not when you were born."

...

As he awoke, the phrase "Unfamiliar ceiling..." crossed the boy's mind. He rose from the bed with a languid demeanor, making his way to the bathroom. Staring into the mirror, he contemplated the reflection before him.

Staring back from the mirror was a young face, maybe around fifteen or sixteen years old. This face had a certain charm, like an 8 out of 10. The only issue was a pair of eyes that looked dull, like fish that had gone bad.

But these eyes helped the young man figure out who he was. You see, these lifeless eyes were famous in the world of two dimension.

"It looks like I'm pretty good-looking. If you ignore these eyes, I'm quite attractive. But because of these eyes, my handsomeness seems a bit toned down."

Standing in front of the mirror, touching his face with one hand, the boy said to himself.

"Hey, I know you think you're handsome, Onii-chan, but if you don't hurry to wash up, let me go first. I need to get wash up too!"

Right as the boy was being a bit too self-absorbed, a clear voice came from behind him.

He turned around and saw a girl in pajamas standing there. She looked about twelve or thirteen and had short hair.

From what she said, it was obvious that she was his younger sister, Komachi.

With those distinct eyes that looked a bit lifeless, it was easy to figure out who the boy was – Hikigaya Hachiman.

With the confirmation of my identity, a rush of memories came pouring into my mind!

I hadn't expected that an ordinary gamer like me would end up in this world, taking on the role of Hachiman.

"Hey~~~ Onii-chan, move it! Komachi is going to wash up!"

As Hachiman remained unfazed, Komachi let out a small yawn, revealing a cute little canine tooth peeking out from the corner of her mouth.

Seeing that tiny canine tooth, a fleeting thought crossed Hachiman's mind, prompting him to give himself a hard mental slap.

"Come on, Hachiman, that's your own sister," he chided himself.

It looked like he needed to be more careful from now on.

"Alright, alright, since my adorable little sister has spoken, let's have Komachi go first and get ready!"

Being a true Chiba native, Hachiman certainly wouldn't turn down such a simple request from his sister. He stepped aside.

Listening to her Onii-chan brag about her cuteness, Komachi's eyes sparkled with happiness. She headed to the mirror to start washing up.

"Oh, what you said just now, Onii-chan, it really got to me. But hey, have you finally reached that age where you care about how you look? I guess it's something every guy goes through." Komachi reminisced, recalling Hachiman's earlier musings to himself.

Hachiman waved it off, saying, "Nah, I was just lost in thought. Komachi, go ahead and get ready. I'm going to make breakfast." With a yawn, he left the bathroom, not wanting to dwell on the topic.

Upon reaching the kitchen, Hachiman set about preparing breakfast.

Cooking breakfast was a breeze for him, given his background as a seasoned gamer. Living alone most of the time had granted him some cooking skills.

As he worked on breakfast, Hachiman also organized his thoughts. Notably, he had recently graduated from junior high school and was set to begin his first year of high school after the summer break.

The situation left him feeling somewhat powerless. He had been excited to meet his destined companions in the upcoming school semester, Yui and Yukino. However, he now found himself having to wait a year for that encounter.

On the bright side, the extra time would allow him to prepare more thoroughly. With a year ahead, he could ready himself for the eventual reunion with Yui and Yukino.

Having said that, since I have dimensional travel, I just don't know if I have a cheat. What if I don't get a cheat and embarrass the vast number of dimensional travelers.

As my mind wandered, Hachiman's hands were busy, and he finished two breakfasts in a short while.

He quickly finished two breakfasts: egg and bacon sandwiches paired with a cup of hot milk, completing a simple morning meal.

As Hachiman placed the two breakfasts on the dining table, a mechanical voice resonated in his mind.

Upon hearing this voice, a trace of surprise flickered in Hachiman's otherwise lifeless gaze.

Its coming!

This is the cheat that the traveler must have.

But before he could be happy, Komachi came out of the bathroom.

"Oh hey, Onii-chan, what's for breakfast this morning?"

"Egg bacon sandwich and milk, okay."

As Komachi emerged, Hachiman suppressed his smile and responded to her inquiry about today's breakfast.

"Of course, Komachi has never been a fussy eater! No matter what Onii-chan prepares, Komachi will gladly eat it!" Komachi said with a smile.

Because their parents often worked overtime, Hachiman took care of Komachi most of the time during their childhood. Regardless of others' opinions of him, as an older brother, Hachiman truly did his best.

"By the way, this line really warms Komachi's heart!" Komachi said as she reached the dining table, tilting her head toward the banner, playfully sticking out her tongue.

"Sure thing, Komachi. You go ahead and have breakfast. I'm going to wash up."

After exchanging greetings with Komachi, Hachiman entered the bathroom. With the appearance of the cheat, he needed to study it carefully.

In the bathroom, Hachiman started washing up and also tried to communicate with his system.

"System?"

"System!"

"System."

Despite his attempts, the voice he heard earlier didn't return. However, he could clearly see a virtual game-like screen in his mind.

The screen displayed a handful of details:

[Host: Hikigaya Hachiman]

[Age: 16 years old]

[Module loaded: Cooking lv1 (100/1000)]

Despite calling out to the system repeatedly and receiving no response, Hachiman eventually gave up.

He came to realize that the system lacked any form of artificial intelligence or even an instruction manual. He couldn't help feeling a bit downcast – the cheat seemed disappointingly irresponsible, earning it a bad review!

Feeling a bit sad, Hachiman finished washing up and left the bathroom.

"Onii-chan, come and eat quickly." Komachi saw Hachiman coming out at the table and shouted at him.

"I'm coming! Coming! Didn't I tell you to eat first! You don't need to wait for me!" Hachiman sat down and couldn't help but said.

"We are family! Of course I have to wait for Onii-chan to have breakfast together! Ahh~" Seeing Hachiman sitting down, Komachi couldn't wait to take a bite of the sandwich, and then said with a happy face.

Hachiman didn't say anything, but he felt touched. Having lived alone in his previous life, he hadn't experienced this kind of family warmth for a while.

From now on, he fully embraced his identity. Having a cute sister like Komachi made him feel good.

He definitely won't be alone like in the original.

I, Hikigiya Hachiman, need to change!

Chapter 2: [2] System(Edited)

After they finished their breakfast, Komachi cleared the table, placed the dishes in the dishwasher, and stretched. She glanced back and saw Hachiman lounging on the sofa like a limp fish, feeling a bit helpless.

"Today marks the beginning of spring break, Onii-chan. Is it really okay for you to be like this?"

Japanese holidays are categorized into three types: spring vacation, summer vacation, and winter vacation. The new semester begins at the conclusion of spring break each year. Usually, schools start in April and continue until March of the following year.

"And Onii-chan, have you thought about how you'll spend your time? Since you don't have any homework this holiday, you can do whatever you want. I'm so jealous!" Komachi added at the end, unable to contain her envy.

"Huh? What's so great about going out? Staying home is the most comfortable option. There's a sofa, Wi-Fi, my phone, and my adorable sister – I'm perfectly content."

Hachiman's response to Komachi's words was nonchalant; he remained sprawled on the sofa like a listless fish. But don't let his appearance fool you; he had actually been exploring how to use his system. Since it hadn't responded to his previous attempts, he was determined to figure it out on his own.

"While it's nice to hear that, Onii-chan, the truth is, you don't have any friends," Komachi complained despite being pleased with Hachiman's words.

Komachi's remark left Hachiman feeling a bit embarrassed because she was right – he truly didn't have any friends.

"I'm perfectly fine having you around during the holidays, and if need be, I can go out with you in a few days." Flipping over on the sofa, Hachiman continued to lie down.

"Ah..." Seeing Hachiman's attitude, Komachi shook her head and sighed. She was genuinely concerned about her Onii-chan.

Initially, Hachiman could communicate with people fairly normally, but at some point, he had grown increasingly isolated. By the time he graduated from junior high, he didn't have a single friend.

"Sometimes, Onii-chan is really in a pitiable state! But luckily, Komachi can keep you company." Komachi said with a triumphant grin.

Lying on the sofa, Hachiman rolled his eyes and stayed quiet. However, in this moment, he noticed a change: the cooking progress bar on the mental display shifted from (100/1000) to (110/1000).

Hachiman did a quick calculation and realized about an hour had gone by.

If he were to estimate, his cheat seemed to automatically increase his experience – around 10 points per hour. This development seemed pretty favorable; it allowed him to improve his skills without any extra effort, which suited him quite well.

However, what weighed more on Hachiman's mind was whether he could activate a new module in the same way he did with the cooking module.

With this thought in mind, Hachiman decided to give it a shot. He rose from the sofa, greeted Komachi, and headed back to his room.

Komachi found this a bit odd. In her experience, her Onii-chan would lounge on the sofa the entire day. So, why the change in behavior today?

Once he was back in his room, Hachiman initiated his experiment. He began by taking out his usual textbook, and after studying for a while, a system prompt appeared.

[Learning module loading...]

[Loading complete.]

As the familiar mechanical synthesized sound echoed once more, a certain expression appeared on Hachiman's face. It seemed that simply engaging in self-study or activities triggered the natural loading of new modules.

Next came the matter of proficiency. Through experimentation, he discovered that besides proficiency increasing naturally, it could also be gained through repeated practice.

For instance, each hour of study boosts the learning module's proficiency by 100. Likewise, considering the data from the cooking module, it could be deduced that every successfully completed cooking task raises the proficiency by 100.

Even though this system lacked intelligence and a manual, its ease of use and overall mechanics were commendable.

With this realization, Hachiman's eyes brightened. His current goal was to load as many modules as possible. As the saying goes, proficiency would automatically increase anyway, so there was no need to worry about being bad at learning.

Hachiman thought for a moment, his mind made up. He scanned the room, his gaze settling on a corner where he unearthed a storage box. From within, he retrieved a wooden sword and a kendo teaching CD.

In his recollections, he had taken a fleeting interest in kendo as a child. He had spent all his pocket money on it, but his enthusiasm waned quickly, leaving the items unused until now.

Brushing off the dust from the CD as he pulled it out, Hachiman smiled. Luckily, he hadn't thrown it away back then, and now it had found a purpose.

Unfortunately, the old-fashioned computer at his home couldn't read CDs, so he would have to borrow the DVD player from the living room.

"Onii-chan, what are you up to?" Komachi tilted her head, perplexed as she observed Hachiman fixated on the kendo CD. She couldn't fathom why he was suddenly interested in kendo.

"Oh, this is a kendo CD I impulsively bought as a kid. Remember, Komachi? I stumbled upon it while tidying up the house today. Since I have some free time during the summer vacation, I thought I'd take a look at it." To address Komachi's confusion, Hachiman casually crafted an excuse to deflect her suspicions.

The instructional video wasn't particularly long, spanning less than two hours. After watching it, the kendo module was automatically loaded into Hachiman's system.

"Onii-chan, there's no ingredients in the fridge. Let's head to the supermarket together," Komachi suggested as she saw Hachiman stow away the CD.

Checking the time, it was already past ten o'clock, which meant it was time to start preparing lunch. After a moment's consideration, he nodded and agreed to Komachi's proposal.

The siblings set off to a nearby supermarket. Hachiman pushed a shopping cart casually, and Komachi's eyes lit up. "Onii-chan, can I ride in the cart?"

14-years-old Komachi was petite, so sitting in the cart didn't look awkward for her.

Lifting Komachi into the cart, Hachiman pushed it through the supermarket aisles.

"Komachi, anything specific you'd like for lunch?" Hachiman inquired casually while perusing the shelves.

"Anything works, as long as it's made by Onii-chan, I'm happy," Komachi replied without any particular requests. Her main wish was for Hachiman to step out more.

Since Komachi had no particular preferences, Hachiman randomly selected a few ingredients. After paying at the checkout, he looked at his slightly diminished wallet and couldn't help but sigh. It seemed that he was approaching the time when he'd need to start earning money. Naturally, achieving financial independence was the first step.

Back at home, Hachiman set about preparing lunch. Noticing he had gained 100 proficiency once again, he felt reassured. Even if he didn't actively do anything, his proficiency would increase by 10 points every hour. He believed that over time, his cooking skills would advance significantly.

After finishing lunch, Hachiman turned his thoughts toward earning money.

After contemplating various options, he came to the realization that he had no straightforward means of making money. Ultimately, he was considering resorting the many experienced dimension travelers took: becoming a copywriter and crafting light novels honestly.
